Jessica Simpson - Nashville Canyon, Part 1 (EP)

This is one of those scenarios where you do wish she’d say “fuck artistic integrity! The only people who will care are 245 gay men and I will give them the first four tracks on A Public Affair x 12 and play pride gigs!” But no.

I really isn't bad. No the kind of music I am seeking out much, but a new Jessica Simpson song in 2025 could be way worse. You can instantly tell it is her, it has a nice structure, the title line is actually quite catchy and I was able to remember how the song goes after one listen. Not everybody has that.

It won't do anything but I'd say it is a win for her.

This is cute but probably not something I’d return to often. Vocally it’s reminding me of Kate Hudson’s album.

She acknowledges in The Cut piece that her albums had no consistency or sound but she makes it sound like that was simply endemic to being a pop star and... it's not. That was a Jessica Simpson problem. Britney Spears identity was established early on and while it evolved naturally, she wasn't in search of a new sound every time she made a new album. Same with Beyonce. Same with Rihanna. Same with Katy. Same with Mariah.

I realize I'm comparing her to women considerably more successful as artists than she was, and the ever changing sound of Jessica was down to her label thinking the last thing didn't work and so she needs to do the next thing. But that was about Jessica and the people around her. It wasn't about her making pop music.

I also had to roll my eyes affectionately at the talk of Ashlee being a rule breaker and doing whatever she wanted. Autobiography - its roll out, themes, and image - was as Pop Star by the books as it gets.

I happened to stumble upon the new song accidentally and I quite liked it. Although, I wish it was her sister who recorded this instead.

I like the sound she's creating here. A little bit of rock, country, pop... sound cool. And yeah, it kind of reminds me a little bit of Kate Hudson's album. "Use my heart against me" is catchy and her voice is still on point. I'm glad she feels motivated to keep making music and trying to find her own style instead of just creating a new christmas album.

I'm really liking this one too.
I like how cutting the lyrics are, Eric really messed up.
"I'd rather die
Then let you be inside me with her on your mind"

Leave is really good, it took me by surprise. The production is excellent, and there’s a moodiness that works really well with her vocal delivery. I’m starting to see the vision of where this project is going and it makes a lot of sense for where she is in her life.

Another Public Affair or Irresistible would not have made sense in 2025.

Just caught the "Leave" video - she is sounding good, and it's only very gently country - it reminds me of Aly and AJ's recent output.
