Jessie Ware - That! Feels Good!

I'm listening to Begin Again on repeat. Like someone wrote earlier, the production feels very classy and lived in. I love how full and not-stripped-back it is! All hail James Ford I guess. I'm very glad that the majority of the tracks on the album (and of the tracks that we haven't heard yet) has him involved. The only thing I have an issue with is the lyrics? Sometimes I think Jessie tends to be a bit anonymous with her lyrics, which feels odd considering she has personality in spades. This wasn't an issue with most of What's Your Pleasure?, but all three tracks we've heard thus far suffer from being a bit faceless lyrically.

I blasted Begin Again on my way to work 3 times in a row today, if it had a 15 minute extended version I would happily listen to it. The production is so full and rich, it's rammed full of confidence.

Funnily enough, I'm usually someone who laments short 3-minute songs in the streaming era, but I think I'm actually preferring the shorter single edit to the longer (presumably, album) version. Maybe because I heard it first, or maybe because it makes the song feel more tightly constructed.

I got a chance to hear the album and I have to say that it is a stellar and cohesive affair. Beautiful People is a a smash, and it should've been released instead of Pearls as it was planned, as they go back-to-back with Begin Again. Hello Love is gorgeous and it already sounds like a classic. Another highlight is Shake The Bottle, which is insanely infectious and immediately stucked in my head.

But if I have to be honest, this record won't be that widely acclaimed as What's Your Pleasure? was, and I would definitely use a few more tracks to spice up the album a bit more.

I'm confident that the singles (minus Free Yourself) aren't the best cuts on the album.

I guess some of these girlies don't want to begin again and it's sad! Anyway, I'm so looking forward to the album next Friday, should be a good time.

I know I’m going to prefer this album over What’s Your Pleasure? based on the three singles alone.

There’s nothing wrong with What’s Your Pleasure? at all - it’s an extremely classy album. But for me, up until Please, Jessie had come across as a bit of a “boring” popstar to me (not in terms of personality, but in terms of actual “popstarryness”, she never gave me that X-Factor if you will, and everything seemed far too restrained)

I love that she’s let her Big Pop Girl out and seems to be having so much fun. I now see what everyone else saw before. This is the only album of hers I’ve ever preordered and that I’m genuinely excited about. That!, indeed, Feels Good!

I almost think the fact that we weren’t expecting a ‘Big Pop Girl’ album from Jessie with WYP? added to the appeal, as well as the slow burn of discovery that the album was turning out that way. Whether correct or not, it feels like everyone has a certain expectation for That! Feels Good! and that’s not exactly worked in her favour.

Despite this, I love the three pre-release singles and can’t wait for the album and to inevitably see her live again!

Free Yourself? one of the best three songs of 2022 fullstop? TRAINOR?
You and I both know this wasn't what I meant. Pearls definitely felt like the first official single off the album as it had new art direction and photoshoots, came with the album pre-order, had promo, wasn't released nearly a year before the album came out etc etc.
