Hope this will be around for a while, might combine it with a concert visit next year.
Also: give that female lead a record deal.

It had a 4 week 'practice' run in Manchester prior to the move to London - It's a great musical because of the brilliance that is Max Martin and the cast are in the main really good too - What let it down just a little for me were the excruciating puns and jokes littered throughout - I still definitely recommend it though.
The writer was the writer of Schitts Creek right?! I assume it’s very similar humour wise?

Saw the show 4 times in Manchester and absolutely loved it. Great staging, very current themes and some really hilarious parts. The entire cast are amazing but Miriam-Teak Lee and Cassidy Jansson in particular blew me away. The way the songs are woven in is really clever and except for a few they all feel like they were written for the musical rather than shoe-horned in. Problem/Can't Feel My Face is definitely the standout track.

So... that was something.

Marjorie from Dorset will get her LIFE to a touring production but it was frankly a bit embarrassing on a major West End stage. Pantomime for adults.

A non binary character singing Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman... Muffy where was the woke consultant.

I’ll do a proper review when I’m lucid in the morning.

I know people who have seen it in both Manchester and London and apparently Mancunian crowds received the show far better.

There were more laughs at the show than with the show with a London crowd.

I saw it last night too. We had some supposedly goodTimeOut deal tickets, got there, to find in row T with overhang obscuring top of stage, we complained and were promptly moved to row 5.

Karen from London behind me with her friend Alison were getting their life having had a bottle of wine between them. Their fake laughing was too much.

I really enjoyed the first act 4/5 - the best of Max's output, with some unexpected moments - Baby and Blow (surprisingly) were moments as was the story told with It's My Life. Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman was a choice but sung beautifully. It's surprising how well the tracks mostly fit.

Act 2 with its forced Backstreet Boys tracks was excruciating to watch. (2/5). The shoehorning at that point was wearing out fast, a boy band?. The big moment with new JessieJ track seemed to misfire,

However, the singing was fantastic throughout as was the lighting and costuming.

If you love Max tracks, you'll have a good time.

My main issue was that I had Juliet's ropey understudy in and, well...girl find the note...find the note. She chickened out of the final note on 'Roar', but that was probably better for everyone.

Other than that, I really enjoyed it. I mean, it was the corniest thing I've seen in a while but they pulled it off with enough self awareness for it to just about work (it's not like something like the Dirty Dancing Musical which is straight up unbearable). Some of the ways they ripped into Shakespeare and his misogynistic work was quite clever and not as eye-rollingly on the nose as I thought it was going to be.

A few of the arrangements of the songs didn't quite pop the way they should have but that could have also been down to Juliet's understudy croaking through it.

The staging and production was pretty good. I know The Shaftesbury isn't the biggest West End stage, but they put it to good use. After some of the shit I've sat through on the West End I was expecting a mess when i first heard about this being a thing (I feared it would be one of those where they get someone from Corrie in who's had two singing lessons and maybe a week on Strictly for dancing).

I saw this last night and was blown away. If you have a chance to see it - definitely go!
I was there last night as well! 4th time seeing it and they’ve made a couple of little tweaks since Manchester but it’s still amazing. Different guy playing Shakespeare but I think I actually preferred his voice to the original.

I'm intrigued - what are the tweaks?

I saw this last night and also loved it - although I agree with someone who commented earlier the first act is much stronger than the second which collapses in on itself just a little. The first act is pretty stellar with most of the big moments, although there are a few in Act 2.

I think Blow was my favourite overall but I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman and Whataya Want From Me were also excellent. It's amazing how well some of the songs fit - and they put interesting spins on a few of them - like making Whataya Want From Me into a duet. The instrumentals that play before the show are fun too (again, particularly Blow). It really showcases how good a songwriter Max Martin is, and how epic his repertoire is.

The whole thing is pretty funny too. It's a good theatre too, with some decently priced tickets. Definitely recommend this to all PJers!
