I dunno if anyone here likes Seotaiji. I think his music pretty rocks.

  2. Re: Korean Pop

I'm surprised people on here and by that, I mean those who do not usually listen to K-Pop, would like Lollipop but anyway I think the majority of the songs they release are really good. If you like 'Lollipop' I think you should check out their other songs like:

    Last Farewell - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsId1UAlGlc
Baby Baby (English version of Last Farewell; audio only) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2b4qeVogB8
    Lies - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QamplVE49M
    Day After Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duu3FReQ9HA

I also think you guys should check out Girls' Generation's Gee as well if you haven't. I think it's as infectious/annoying as Lollipop. Here's the link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eodFU4b237s

Regarding Wonder Girls' US debut, initially I thought they must be joking as they will fail miserably. But recently I listened to Nobody again and I think it might work because it's so catchy. However, they will probably be a one-hit wonder that is if they succeed. The english version will most likely be this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BabUXKHJ5Og The girl who sang it sounds so much like the Wonder Girls I thought it was them at first!

Sandara needs to keep away from my T.O.P before I turn nasty. Just joking! Anyway I like that song but not enough to add it to my iPod/iTunes.

I have heard of Seotaiji (many Korean singers/groups seem to mention him/them be it for what they listen to when they were young or who they look up to) but I have only heard one of his/their songs which I've forgotten. I only know I heard it last year during one of those year-end music shows.

  3. Re: Korean Pop

Some songs to share, they are mostly beautiful ballads with rap verses. All but one (8Eight's Without A Heart) are by Epik High.

8Eight: This is the first and only song by them that I've heard so far and I just think it's so beautiful. The Twilight-inspired music video is very good too. A little tidbit - the girl in the video is Sohee from the Wonder Girls.
    Without A Heart - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXPfcAjqFUA

Epik High - I've mentioned them in the very first post but thought I would do so again as they have recently released a new album 'Map The Soul'. Like some of their Korean counterparts it looks like Epik High are trying for an international break as well, releasing the title song 'Map The Soul' in both Korean and English. Personally I think the song is okay; for some reason it reminds me of Coldplay's Don't Panic. Right now, I like their past songs better but I'm sure Map The Soul will grow on me with more listens.

    My other Epik High favourites:
    1 Minute 1 Second - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_0Tmf8MDQw
    Umbrella - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrNd9Vzat8c
    Love Love Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RTl3HXK_NI
    One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W8XB-niB0A
    Paris - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwrG6D6oVpk
    Fly - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELiogafk2OA
    Breakdown - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl7MZ_BqSco
    Fan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGhcrY3Y8wY

Oh they are going on an US tour soon in case anyone in the US is interested in catching one of their shows.

    Re: Korean Pop

I think Lollipop is a better song compared to SNSD's Gee as it has less of the cutey image and a liitle bit more of the hop-hop influence (just my taste).

Let's face it. Sandara's gonna be paired with T.O.P., especially on TV. And if 2NE1 becomes big (their success will still depend on their first and second singles, most especially the first), I won't be surprised if T.O.P. and Sandara will be given a one-season TV series.

And hey. Who has heard Big Bang's Make Love from their Japanese album? It's so good. But very Western. Wish Dae Sung would disappear though! Make Love is sung in full English. I'm surprised they don't have much of the Korean accent, especially T.O.P., G-Dragon, Tae Yang and Seung Ri. Dae Sung ruins the song since his Korean accent is strong. He could have practiced his verse more!

  5. Re: Korean Pop

Oh, he's one of my favourite asian male singers as well!

Seotaiji is like the god father in Korean music industry and became as culture icon. His music has influenced Korea in the whole 90s. untill 2004, each time he released his work, the album was the yearly highest selling records.
After 2000, he became half disappeared from music public and went into business wid his self-label company. He only released an album in 4 years. That's why not many foreign ppl will know him. He's still the biggest name/most powerful artist today in Korea.
If looking up further, you will find today almost half of the Korean rock bands are from Seotaiji label production. He has set up his music empire of the rock culture.

His last orginial album is as far as in 2004 called "Issue" which I think is still incredibly amazing nowadays and international-orientated. It was the highest selling record of 2004 in Korea. After that he disappeared again, until end of last year he returned to music spotlight, but I havn't listened to his new stuff.

I'm still in luv with "Issue". You can take a look below. His music is always powerful and profound in lyrics, focusing on culture and society.

Seotaiji - Robot ( from album "Issue")

  6. Re: Korean Pop

I can't say I like those songs, does he just do rock? Because in my faintest memory the song by him that I heard last year was edging towards electro-pop. Anyway, 'Live Wire' sounds so Blink-182 to me!

  7. Re: Korean Pop

^yeh, maybe his musis is a bit too heavy here, under the discussion of pop music. The song "Live Wire" is the lightest & most poppy track in the album. a plain pop-punk.

He does a variety of music genres, from pop to hip-hop to rock to electro.
So his target audience is very broad. I think lots of ppl can find their own liking on him depends on different genres, unless you dislike his voice.
To be honest I'm just familiar with his rock sides, his hip hop/pop work in the middle 90s is not my thing

    Re: Korean Pop

Wouldn't it be nice to see a world where Korean artists release Korean singles in UK or US and UK artists release singles in more Asian countries?

Imagine a world where Super Junior released Sorry Sorry in UK and mainland Europe and Girls Aloud released Untouchable in China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.

  11. Re: Korean Pop

Your post prompted me to go listen to Cinderella again (uh still don't like it on 2nd listen), the first time I heard it I didn't like it which was kinda surprising as I consider myself an 'easy' music listener. Oh wait now I think I know why, it's because the first time I saw In Young was when she was hosting Music Bank and I found her annoying.

I love One More Time by Jewelry (Seo In Young's Group) though. Such an old song but it has only clicked with me recently.

Korean artists attempting to break into the US market is becoming a trend now (Rain, BoA, Se7en, Wonder Girls etc.) but honestly I don't see them having much success. Even if there were initial success, I don't think it would be sustainable. I wish Korean artists would try the UK/Europe though, I'm sure their music would be more accepted there.

As for the other way round, to me it's quite sad that only mainstream artists from the US tend to release their music worldwide because I'm sure Korea would love some Girls Aloud.

  14. Re: Korean Pop

This makes me cry every time I watch it, okay not really but close. It's my latest obsession and I feel the need to plug this beautiful song and video again:

  15. Re: Korean Pop

I've been absolutely obsessed with Wonder Girls recently. I can't wait for them to debut here. Hopefully it goes better than BoA's half-assed "crossover".

  16. Re: Korean Pop

I've a few songs to share, some old, some new but mostly very good in my opinion.

Son Dam Bi: Bad Boy is an old song of hers that I've recently fell in love with. IT'S AMAZING!
    Bad Boy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXOAnuQRm6I&fmt=18

Davichi: A duo with great vocals. Last hit song Love & War is very sweet, current single 8282 is an uptempo dance ballad.
    Love and War - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyUgXBdn3EU&fmt=18
    8282 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJCzhUnGUno&fmt=18

Dong Bang Shin Ki (DBSK for short) - Extremely popular boyband in Asia. Mirotic is like classic boyband pop, complete with hot boys and hot dance moves. Sarah Conner's Under My Skin shares the same tune as Mirotic. I've posted below the dance version of the video instead of the regular one 'cos here you can see the hot boys busting some moves. Wrong Number, their follow-up single is not bad, somewhat R&B.
    Mirotic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUdNBv5GGPI&fmt=18
    Wrong Number - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5M2zFQAoJU&fmt=18

Kara: Girl group. Honey, as its title suggests, is sweet and cute k-pop. Give it a listen, you might just like it.
    Honey - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeyuMPCo0KY&fmt=18

Big Bang: One of my favourite Korean groups. Lady is a fun, upbeat song with some African beats going on while A Good Man is the exact opposite, sad but still a very good song written by T.O.P.
    Lady (Audio only): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMFuSNKxlPQ
    A Good Man (Live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMwNP1e9LWY

I can't wait for Wonder Girls' US debut too! Nobody is such an amazing song. Wonder what tricks Park Jin Young (their company head) will pull to get them noticed...

EDIT: Added some more songs above, plus a couple of my favourite performances below:

SHINee - Medley (Love Like Oxygen, A.Mi.Go, Replay): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NapbQRjrALs&fmt=18
    DBSK - Wrong Number + Mirotic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN2D-JEoxnA&fmt=18

  17. Re: Korean Pop

That Som Dam Bi song is good but sounds alooooot like Big Bang - there's even a mash-up video to show how well they blend together.

And there's like 8282 things wrong with that 8282 video. Mainly that it appears very much like a teacher is dating a psychic-ninja 2nd grader who finds it funny when guys get plowed down by trucks? I'm sure I'm missing some context haha

  18. Re: Korean Pop

Yes, 'Bad Boy' sounds so much like Big Bang's Last Farewell which I love too. If I'm not wrong they are both produced by the same team, Brave Brothers. I just saw the remix video you are talking about, the only flaw is probably it shows how similar the 2 songs are. Other than that, it's great!

I've also just seen the 8282 video for the first time (I don't usually watch the music videos unless they feature hot boys, haha) and it's just so wrong! Haha

  19. Re: Korean Pop

I really hope we get a new Hyroi Lee album this year...
