K-Pop (General Discussion)

SHINee and EXO probably fit what you’re looking for the most. Their discographies are very R&B-oriented and have strong focuses on vocal harmonies (you could say this about basically any group under SM Entertainment however). The former are more or less the boy group equivalent to Red Velvet as they have explored a lot of different sounds and genres, while the latter are more pure R&B.

Other boy groups I’d also recommend which have what you’re looking for are:

- NU’EST (have really good R&B vocals and dance songs)
- GOT7 (their singles are hit and miss (speaking as a fan) but their album tracks are very good and their more R&B songs are found there)
- ONF (think SHINee in terms of diverse range of sounds and concepts, but more pure-pop-oriented. But they also have strong vocals and harmonies)
- SEVENTEEN (this group has different sub-units dedicated to vocals, dance and rap, I think you’d like their vocal unit songs a lot)
-OnlyOneOf (their sound is very alternative-R&B)

Oh Thank you! This is exactly what I needed. I’ve tried with BTS but there are not really my cup of tea. And I will definitely check your suggestions out, Red Velvet is my favourite girl group within the K-pop universe right now!!

Hello fellow K-pop enthusiasts!! I need guidance and help. I’ve discovered the amazing wealth of k-pop girl groups last year, but now I need help to discover the world of boy groups. I’m more into R&B-leaning, smooth harmonies and killer vocals, but open to explore it all! So please help me, which boy bands should I start with?
Don't sleep on NCT! Especially the b-sides of the NCT 127 unit as the title tracks tend to be the noisier kpop affair but their b-sides are nearly always R&B-leaning. The Limitless mini album is probably their most R&B front-to-back including the title track (and also their best).

Also adding on to @nikkysan's GOT7 recommendation, the GOT7 sub-unit JUS2 have one of the best R&B-leaning mini albums in K-POP. A duo moreso than a group, but definitely worth checking out. I think for boy groups the best R&B stuff comes from their subunits (JUS2, EXO-CBX) and their solos (Woodz, Baekhyun).

Oh thank you! I have to say, the mini-album format isn’t my ideal way of consuming music, mostly because it’s so easy to overlook and miss releases (and my music library becomes so messy). So all of these recommendations are very helpful!

fffff I cannot believe I forgot JUS2. JUS2's one mini album is legit one of the best k-pop projects ever made. This one is a must-listen @LeBratt

@nikkysan what albums or entries would you recommend me starting with from SHINee and EXO?

For SHINee:
- Misconceptions of Us (this is a two part album was originally released seperately and then later repackaged as one)
- Odd/Married to the Music
- 1 of 1/1 and 1

For EXO:
- EXODUS/Love Me Right
- Don't Mess Up My Tempo/Love Shot
- Obsession

You might know this already but a lot of full-length k-pop albums receive re-releases/repackages with extra songs so always listen to those versions (they're the second title listed in each bullet point).

@nikkysan hit the nail on the end with most of their suggestions, so I’m mostly just here to add that the 6 bg stans on this forum pray for days like this ddd.

Just to piggy back what a few others have said, NCT 127 is very R&B leaning if you can get over (or fall in love with) their title tracks, which aren’t usually indicative of their sound as a whole. Listen to their newest album 2 Baddies (or the repackage Ay-Yo) to get a good idea of their overall sound.

EXO is always a great gateway drug for K-Pop boybands, in my opinion. Start with the "LOVE SHOT" album (the "TEMPO" repackage).

SHINee is my ultimate and agreed that "The Misconceptions of Us" is a great starting point! "The Story of Light" is near perfect also.

NU'EST is fantastic and their final Greatest Hits release "Needle and Bubble" is perfect.

BEAST (now named Highlight) has great pop/RnB-tinged tracks as well, I would start with the "Time" and "Midnight Sun" EPs.

Well everyone already gave great recommendations in the R&B and vocals category, but since you mentioned also wanting to explore more, I'm gonna plug recommend taking a look at our yearly K-Pop Boys Rate! You're sure to find lots of great songs in the Top 10 or even 20. Here's links to the results of the 2020 and 2021 editions. Could be a great way to sample a variety of artists and then choose which ones to explore further from there!
