Kacey Musgraves - Deeper into the Well

Star-Crossed was stretched across too many directions marketing-wise, and I do think that's tainted what was a solid album. If the aim was a pop single, everything should've kicked off headfirst with Justified. Or Breadwinner should've gotten the push when it naturally gained traction. There's some great songs on there, and the new single has me circling back.

That said, Deeper Well feels like a palette cleanser and a great point of growth off the back of it. She's clearly killing it on Spotify. The Zach Bryan collab has really helped her, and it already seems like there's a way more streamlined approach to presenting this album. I'm happy the boom country music is having has benefitted her.

This will be my most played song of the year.

But I don’t understand people saying this is her returning to her Golden Hour sound – to these ears, she’s never left that sound? Sonically this wouldn’t feel out of place on star-crossed.

This is the third album she’s done with the same two guys she did Golden Hour with. It’s fascinating how star-crossed’s marketing campaign obviously made the whole thing feel so different to so many of her listeners. To me, Golden Hour, star-crossed and this new song feel very much cut from the same sonic cloth (and I’m very thankful for that!).

Love the title track. Very simple to the point where it would seem hollow but thankfully that isn’t the case. Just powerful. Lyrics are very relatable too (especially as someone who recently quit weed after smoking everyday for like 6 years) and yeah……I think a lot of people in their 20s are going through similar. Realizing one’s addiction issues and overcoming them and really actually focusing on mental health.

The only complaint that it’s missing a soaring middle 8…..like the song is BEGGING for one but oh well. Still great.

Hope she leans into the folktronica sound as the base for the album. I feel like it would be a natural direction for her.
