Kate Bush

Thanks for this post!
I feel like it's always been hard to track down what songs have different single versions compared with the album versions with her.
If you’re sitting comfortably, I’ve compiled a very long list of everything I know of…

Kate Bush - Alternate Mixes.

Please note that I am not including the Director’s Cut tracks as alternative versions as this was a separate project with its own studio album. I’m also not (generally) including live tracks or live TV performances. The four On Stage EP tracks are the exception as these were included in her 1990 boxed set.

Wuthering Heights
  1. 1978 Single and album version.
  2. 1986 New Vocal (vocals re-recorded, track remixed). Included on The Whole Story and The Other Sides.
The Man With The Child In His Eyes
  1. Album version.
  2. Single version with “He’s here” intro. Appeared on original single and on “The Greatest Love II” 1989 Telstar compilation (only known CD issue of this version).
Moving
  1. Album version which leads into Saxophone Song.
  2. Single version (b-side) that does not have this lead-in.
Hammer Horror
  1. Album version with gong at the end.
  2. Single version without the gong.
Wow
  1. Album version with In Search of Peter Pan leading into the synthesiser chords of Wow.
  2. Single version with synthesiser chords removed. Appeared on original single and on The Whole Story.
Kate Bush on Stage (EP)

L’Amour Looks Something Like You exclusive to the EP. The other three tracks are different to those on the Live at Hammersmith Odeon video soundtrack. Appeared on original EP and on the bonus discs in the This Woman’s Work boxed set (1990).

Breathing
  1. Album version, which also appeared in The Single File boxed set and on The Whole Story.
  2. Single version, which only appeared on the original single and on 1985 compilation for Greenpeace (only known CD issue of this mix). Very similar to album mix, but the spoken word section that is in the far right on the album is centred on the single.
Babooshka
  1. Album version, fading into Delius.
  2. Single version without the fade into Delius. Included on The Whole Story.
Army Dreamers
  1. Album version with fade.
  2. Single version with a different ending (no fade). Included on The Whole Story.
Delius
  1. Album version with Babooshka fading into it.
  2. Single version (b-side) separated from Babooshka.
December Will Be Magic Again
  1. 1979 “bongos” version often used on Christmas compilations. Kate performed the track on her 1979 TV special, used as the video. Never released on a Kate Bush single or album.
  2. 1980 Single version. Complete re-recording and new arrangement. Included on 1990 This Woman’s Work box and possibly on The Other Sides.
  3. 1993 mix of 1980 single version. Very similar to 1980 mix but lighter. Included on Moments of Pleasure 12” and CD singles (the close similarity with the 1980 mix means that it could be this 1993 mix that’s on The Other Sides).
Sat In Your Lap
  1. 1982 Album mix, also used in The Single File boxed set and on The Whole Story.
  2. 1981 Single mix, only used on the original 7” single. Noticeably different to album mix.
The Dreaming
  1. Album mix leading into Night of the Swallow.
  2. Single mix without segue. Included on The Whole Story.
  3. Dreamtime (Instrumental version). Backing vocals retained and “Dreamtime” chorus vocals added. Long ending with didgeridoo. Only released on 1982 b-sides.
Ne T’enfuis Pas
  1. 1982 b-side mix. “Muddy” vocals and a different vocal take. Only released on 1982 b-sides (There Goes A Tenner in UK and Suspended in Gaffa elsewhere) but included in The Single File boxed set.
  2. 1983 remix with re-recorded vocals that are much clearer in the mix. All uses of this track since (This Woman’s Work boxed set, The Other Sides, 2019 12” single) are this remix.
Night of the Swallow
  1. Album version, with cross-fade from The Dreaming
  2. Single version, without the cross-fade.

  2. The Other Sides edit, 2018 (4’12) [edit - thanks to @djmakemewet for this info].
Hounds of Love
  1. Album and single version
  2. 12” version
  3. US single version - included an additional chorus just after the second chorus.
  4. Version with intro from 12” version edited together with regular album/single version, without the spoken “It’s in the trees, it’s coming.” Kate performed this version at the 1986 Brit Awards (then known as BPI Awards).
The Big Sky
  1. 1985 Album version (until 2011). All EMI issues of Hounds of Love include this mix.
  2. 12” version.
  3. 1986 Single version. This replaced the album version on Hounds of Love issues from 2011 onwards (and also on 2018 remaster). All Fish People issues of Hounds of Love include this version.

Impressive list! I must add a small correction - the two latest "Eat the Music" mixes, from 2011 and 2018, are different, at least in duration. The one from 2018 is slightly shorter, might be a fade of the 2011 one.

The Castaway edit (or lack thereof) of "Be Kind to My Mistakes" is forever in my top Kate tracks.

And the omission of both "The Empty Bullring" and "Not This Time" in the reissues just boggles my mind. Like, I guess overlooking the GLC tracks like "Ken" is whatever (even if she still included the piano blip that is "One Last Look Around The House Before We Go..."), but "The Empty Bullring"!? Unforgivable, Catherine!

She apparently took a dislike to Not This Time as early as 1997, as it wasn’t included on that year’s Hounds of Love remaster, even though (inexplicably) the 1989 remix of Be Kind To My Mistakes was. The track does include a minor expletive - could that be the reason? Would the 1997 Hounds issue and The Other Sides have had to include a warning sticker if it had been included?

With The Empty Bullring, I wonder if it’s because it describes cruelty to animals by humans? Plenty of cruelty to humans in her work, but this is the only one where animals are involved (though Hounds of Love uses it as a metaphor).

Yep, I agree on Ken. After the misunderstanding surrounding her comments on Theresa May, it’s understandable that she wouldn’t want anyone to think she was leftie either. Not all that many people would know (or bother to learn) about The Comic Strip link 28 years on.

I had to quickly check what I'd included on my Hounds homemade deluxe - thankfully, I put Not This Time on there but not the 1989 Be Kind... remix. Something right for once!

Thank you for that, I didn’t know about that one! Thankfully I have both on my phone. The lyric “the food of love, eat the music” ends at 3’39 on both versions, so the 2018 edit must be (as you say) an early fade. Quite why she saw fit to do this (having already done it to Big Stripey Lie) is beyond me.

I’ve never heard the 3’25 French CD edit. It must be even more brutal than any of the others. Even on the single version, the line “the food of love, eat the music” doesn’t end until 3’32.

I have done an edit on my list to include this correction.

Isn’t there supposed to be a different mix of Wild Man on The Art Of Peace charity compilation too?
It was called a “remastered shimmer” but by all accounts it’s just a remaster of the 2011 version. I’ve never actually heard it but as the 2018 remaster appears to be no different to the original (other than being a remaster), I can’t imagine the Art of Peace version is.

It’s difficult to get hold of - it wasn’t released physically and the track can’t be downloaded separately (I really didn’t want the full album!). If anyone does have more information on this remaster, I’d love to know if it really is different.

There are two versions of Burning Bridge as well - it's about 30 seconds shorter on The Other Sides. "Against the world!" ends at about 3:43 on both versions so I think The Other Sides is just another early fade.

Thanks for that. That’s really annoying - each disc in The Other Sides is short enough anyway. There really was no need for them to butcher any tracks.

I honestly think she just forgot about it. Ha!
