Katy Perry - 143

Inside the emergency board room meeting at Capitol Records.

I keep coming back to thinking that this might actually be the biggest bag-fumble of, if not all time, then certainly the last ten years. There are so many red flags that I can only assume everybody involved is just colorblind.

It's colossally frustrating.

Part of me feels like there's a reason she and Orlando chose to be on vacation the week her single came out, rather than on a press tour for it. She usually does radio phoners when she drops a new single. I don't think she's done a single one. There had to be some awareness that this could go south for her.

She had a bunch pre-taped supposedly, but I don't know if they're just meant to come later? So far only the Apple Music one has been published.

The craziest thing to me about all this is if she was dead set on making this choice, why lead with it?!? I don't know for a fact that Lifetimes is a non-Luke track, but if it is wouldn't it have made more sense to make that the lead single in May, cash in on that good will, then drop the entire album on July 12th? Then when people find out Luke produced 5 songs or whatever the albums already out. At least there's not the firestorm of bad press going into it. She herself clearly is making bad choices - I'm not letting her off the hook for that - but the people advising her are morons.

I'm curious how, if at all, the reception will affect touring plans. The boxscores for the Prismatic World Tour were good but they were practically giving away tickets to Witness: The Tour and venues still had thousands of open seats. Play did fine?... but I think she's got a huge uphill battle ahead if they press forward with an arena tour.

Exactly. It is an absolute disregard that working with Luke would hurt her chances of any success here.
But to be honest, even if this wasn't a Luke song -- it's also just not even a good song. The songwriting is not good.

I think the previous user was right in that she could potentially do okay on nostalgia if the tour is marketed properly. One thing about Katy is that she will deliver a great pop show even without new hits (Witness: The Tour, Play).

She could pick up concert goers like myself who haven't seen her previously but wouldn't mind ticking her off the list. Although I was once let go from a job for taking a sick day and accused of going to see the California Dreams Tour the night before, which was untrue.

Sinking so much money into a music video when the medium is almost irrelevant thanks to TikTok, focusing on radio payola* instead of Spotify playlist support… Appealing to nostalgia doesn’t mean you have to run your campaign like it’s actually 2010, sis!

*the jump scare hearing this song come on the radio in my Uber and Katy announcing that Z100 was going to play it all day ddd

That was a classic, that was a classic. I hope the Katy Perry concert was worth it.
