Katy Perry - 143

I'm intruiged she's going for another Luke single. Is she just going to shoulder shrug ahead with the era from Planet Unbothered or does she expect a tide turn on the anti-Luke sentiments purely based on the song being objectively better? But if that's all it would take why did they unleash that turd on us in the first place? This whole campaign is so confusing.

Because she thought the woman's anthem a man wrote by listing adjectives would smash.

I think they are hoping with a big enough push 'Lifetimes' will make some noise. But even if it was great I don't think anything she puts out this era is going to be a "hit" as her main fanbase (gays) aren't fucking with her.

Eh, they weren't fucking with "Woman's World," but you can be sure they'll be going up for songs like "Lifetimes" and "Nirvana". Doesn't necessarily mean they'll be hits, but I think there is still a majority who probably want Katy to do well to feed their own nostalgia, and they will take whatever tolerable tracks they can salvage from this wreckage and they'll be the ones talking about how unfairly she was treated and how underrated the album is after it's been out for a few weeks.

Really? Maybe a certain aged demographic gay will be here for her then, but you've got the younger pop girls now releasing insanely superior pop music and Katy just seems dated and desperate.

We'll see, I suppose.

Dated, desperate, and dead eyed bops didn't stop Kim Petras from booking an arena tour! And Katy is already a bigger name, with a far bigger reach, so yeah I don't expect there to be some sort of display of taste or preference in quality pop music over whatever Katy is releasing by the same sort of people who would go out in a Kamala Brat shirt unironically. Some people just want to bop and they don't really give a fuck who produced it or the ins and outs of all that.

It pains me to say but I do think Lifetimes will be played in gay clubs and pres and it will become a minor gay hit (not on charts)

There’s been a lot to catch up on in this thread and I haven’t even began to cover it.

But, if she released something that actually bops, she’ll get a decent subsection of people to stream and a cute 100-200M streams on Spotify a year or so out. The general public won’t make a dent for her. Sure, a collaboration or ballad can fall in the right place eventually, but a Katy Perry dance-pop track is likely out of the running.

Nothing against those that love Roar, Firework..etc but these "empowerment anthems", even when they aren't as clumsily written as Woman's World, have never been for me... and now *checks notes*.. a generic club song about everlasting love for your daughter... yawn. Even ignoring Puke's involvement and the production completely, these songs just aren't... exciting?

Something flirty with classic Katy innuendo (Harley's, California Gurls, Birthday..etc) is a lane I'd much prefer, especially with Katy-coded songs (as many have noted) like Espresso smashing,... but maybe nah, just let the doomed era, doom ...hope lessons are learned, and she does better next time.

Her form of empowerment has always felt very pageant-y to me. It's all very much "bad stuff is sad, world peace is good, and women are really cool." I can see why little kids would connect with empowerment themes as simple as those but they don't work when her audience is fully grown.
