Katy Perry - 143

Saying her team keep her decisions in check...is this still the same team that signed off on killing all the good will from her last 'comeback' by pushing Small Talk and dragging out the release of Smile an entire year later than it should of come out?

Kind of shocked that question got the green light...but the answer wasn't even a real answer. Did they really think this would settle anything instead of making it worse?
I feel like she saw the criticism and took it as "why is a MAN producing a song called Woman's World or a song dedicated to Katy's daughter like Lifetimes", so her response was entirely about that, when the real criticism was why is an alleged RAPIST producing these songs.

This was an impossible question to answer for someone about to drop an album with his credits all over it. I'm kinda surprised she even allowed the question to be asked.

I think they reached a point where it couldn't be avoided and had to be addressed (right move) but with a ridiculous answer from Katy's part (wrong move).

The fact that she couldn't bring herself to look past some minor ancient beef with Bonnie for this era but was willing to make a whole album with Luke says so much.

Obviously we will never know what really went on behind the scenes, but I've always felt like 95% of the concepts and lyrics from the big Teenage Dream era hits were Bonnie's ideas. I mean, look at Bonnie's "Hot City" album... it was written around the same time and is basically Teenage Dream 2.0. Bonnie said on a podcast very recently that back in the day Katy asked her to send over some of the demos from "Hot City" so she could hear them, and Bonnie said no. Katy got annoyed and said something to the effect of "Why? Do you think I'm going to steam them?" I think that pretty much says it all. Bonnie has said numerous times that the title "Teenage Dream" was very hard for her to give up, and she shared some of Katy's early lyrics for the song... which were something about Peter Pan and incredibly cringey (v on brand for Ms. Perry).

Bonnie also said that she went home and wrote "Part of Me" in one night, and Katy was so thrilled with the song and said "I'm going to buy you a car"! which is so f'n condescending, lol. From what I gather, it's pretty clear that Katy, Luke and co. knew that Bonnie was lighting in a bottle at that time, and Luke led her on with the promise of making her an artist in her own right if she kept delivering hits for Katy, Britney, etc. I think the fall out started when Bonnie tried to go out on her own, and her style and sound were (obviously) very reminiscent of Katy's. She was performing her "hits medley" everywhere and introducing it as "the songs that I wrote". I doubt that sat well with Katy. Bonnie has said she's tried to reach out, but last heard from Katy (via text) in 2020. IMO Bonnie is the missing piece of the puzzle in recapturing that era, and Katy's getting a big slice of humble pie which is exactly what she deserves. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for reading my essay!

I do remember feeling kinda bad for Bonnie when she released American Girl because I'd see people saying "it's so Katy Perry, she needs her own identity" but at the end of the day...that was her identity. That's not to discredit Katy or say she totally just jacked Bonnie's whole thing, but I think Bonnie gave a lot of herself in those songs that ended up not translating well to people when she tried to put out her own stuff.

This is unrelated to the general conversation but I remember so clearly in an interview back in the day Marina saying that a 'very big popstar' heard How To Be a Heartbreaker before it came out and really wanted it, and Marina had to refuse.

Considering what Bonnie has said there and the Dr Luke connection I feel there is a high chance that was Katy?

Just speculating but it would be interesting to see a timeline where Katy had released that song.

Bonnie took the risk that all songwriters take when working heavily with a famous popstar and massively reaped the rewards. She has probably lived very comfortably off that choice to write with Katy, and Katy had plenty of great songs without her before and after.

This thread is so weird. Just say you’re settling petty misogynistic beef on behalf of your younger self and go.

The way the local church’s bell was set off right as she was screaming about giving a blowjob. I love demonic synchronicity.

Also Lifetimes is meh, and Woman’s World isn’t as terrible as people here make it out to be. Do I seek it out intentionally? No. But I won’t go out of my way to change the station if it came on the radio.

P.S. Dr. Puke can rot.

Woman's World? Being played on the radio?
