Katy Perry - Witness

Wonderful image, terrible font.

I know tours are where artists get most of their money nowadays but everything about this rollout still feels so strange. "Get tickets to THE WITNESS TOUR and receive a copy of the new album Witness out June 9th" is basically how the website reads. No tracklist, not even an official confirmation if that is the album cover or just a promo image. How odd.
The album has basically been a footnote to every big announcement in this campaign. Before today the most we knew of it were some generic as fuck, contradicting adjectives she had vaguely tossed its way, and now with this announcement, we have it being a glorified tour souvenir with a maybe-maybe-not cover. And God help us if that's the cover with its digital alarm clock font-having ass.

This campaign has just been dumb. I know that @goldsoundz says her biggest champions at Capitol left, but that doesn't really fly as an excuse to me either. If she was a struggling indie artist, sure, but it's Katy fucking Perry; basically the biggest artist on the damn label. The profits are a sure bet. Just fucking put shit out.

Sooo the original album release date must have been this Friday right? It makes no sense for all that promo to happen late May if their plan was June all along.
From next week there is barely anywhere on U.S. television to get major promo. Ellen and SNL finish this week, there's a primetime special for James Corden which will get viewers, and she's conveniently located in NYC for Fallon this week as well. No doubt she'll perform on Kimmel on June 9 itself or something and there'll be a few more promo opportunities around that week. But as has been said, touring is where artists get their money from now, and so if tickets for that are going on sale on Monday, it makes sense for her to do a major rollout of promo this week.

Seems to me the rollout messiness has to do probably with the underperformance of the singles leading to an album push back that clashed with a bunch of already lined up promo slots and tour plans. I'm sure this would be out in the next week or two if Chained had been a huge multi-week #1 smash and Bone Apple Tea was sailing its way up the charts like they were expecting.
