Keeping up with new music releases.

Discussion in 'Comeback corner' started by Txetxu, Jun 8, 2018.

  1. I did not know where to post this particular thread, but for us oldies I'd definitely prefer it to be seen over this part of the forum.

Well, going to the heart of the matter, I can't seem to keep up with all of these new releases anymore. Perhaps I'm a bit of an old weirdo but there's a feeling of "missing out" every new friday comes around for the thirst hunting of brand new tracks. There is so much to hear and so little time to dig for the good stuff. Of course, Spotify always comes out with great recommendations based on my previous listening experiences, but I still feel like I'm missing out some great music.

Does anyone get this sensation of missing out?

  2. Very few new releases are "doing it" for me this year, mostly because the genres I gravitate to aren't in fashion. They'll come back, but until the cycle swings toward more exciting things I'm content to dig in the vaults for music I've missed from previous eras. I'm also paying more attention to international stuff, as I did the last time I didn't like what US/UK chart music was serving me (early 00s).

Honestly, I don't really feel like I'm missing out because I'm still discovering plenty of "new to me" music even if it's been out for decades. I've probably already bought more CDs this year than I did last year, even if almost none of them have been 2018 releases. My most favorite recent music discoveries have all been albums made before 1990.

  3. Gosh, working full-time has kinda evaporated the energy I used to have when I was hunting down new music while I went to Uni. I did make a list of new releases that came out in 2017/2018 by bands I used to like a lot back in that era, but even then I still haven't found the time to really listen to them.

What makes me discover new music is shopping for clothes actually. Thanks to Shazam I found a lot of great new Pop singles while browsing the racks in H&M.

I am also a fan of the YouTube Playlist. Shazaming one thing in H&M leads me to discover a whole host of similarly great Pop singles on there afterwards.

The New Friday thingy on Spotify is not really my kinda thing. Too many dissimilar songs pushed down our throats by big corps on there.

  4. I miss those old release schedules that would show you what was coming out 6 weeks in advance.

  5. I find that I really need to dig around for new music that I actually like these days.
Most "current" and "popular" music does nothing for me, but there is plenty of unknown great stuff if you go looking for it.
I find youtube has much better recommendations than spotify based on my searches.
I never feel like I'm missing out on anything.
I usually stumble across most of the music I love by accident anyway.
  6. The release radar from Spotify playlist is quite good as it highlights new music from artists that you follow on Spotify. Otherwise I generally hunt around on forums (e.g. here and Country Pulse if you like country music).

  10. I never recovered from the loss of the CD single, and basing everything around those dates and chart entries, and the move to Friday for new releases.
  11. It has become chaos. Since the move to Friday, tracks just drop any day of the week. Tuesday and Thursday are popular. On the one hand, it's nice and unexpected to have something just drop - but it's much harder to keep track of. There's little value to a new single now - if you still buy physical music, it's a bit unfair you have to buy tracks from it for 99p in advance, then re-buy four of them when you buy the album on CD/LP. At least with CD singles, you got something additional.

  12. I actually love the move to Friday releases. It feels great to stop at the record shop on the way home after a long week and know something interesting may be waiting there --- it's like a reward. And then you have the whole weekend to enjoy the music!
  13. I have completely given up to the extent of just occasionally checking out the most popular threads in the main forum. There is just too much stuff out there. I don't know how people do it these days other than spending the whole day surfing and no job. I got dogs to put through college!

  14. I'm really excited about the SOPHIE album out this Friday.
But no signs of any physical release?
I hope this isn't a sign of a new trend where digital and streaming get released weeks before a CD/Vinyl release?
Even worse no physicals at all?

  15. I spotted the odd comment on SDE about lack of inclusion of a download code in releases stating that most computers nowadays don't even have cd slots anymore. Can you believe that?

  17. That was what made Monday great too - worst day of the week but you had new releases to get you through it! I still find it odd that movies on DVD/Blu-ray didn’t move to Friday though.

  19. I know the music industry doesn't exist to help my mental health, but I expect a lot of people were drawn into the world of charts and music and all the surrounding stuff because of its repeatable structure and the way it can anchor your memories and associations so vividly. Take that away, as they have done over the past decade, and you lose a vital part of what made it special to a certain type of person.
