Kelela - Raven + RAVE:N, The Remixes

Wow, on my first listen, and the album is deeply ambient-leaning in places, especially during the second half. It's very atmospheric and uncompromising. Happy Ending and Contact are the most uptempo tracks by far.

Definitely more Aphex Twin than any sort of dance-centric Renaissance 2.0. Going to take a few listens to let it fully sink in - this is the type of album that demands that type of attention, but I'm digging it. She's serving Mutya on some of the vocals.

I've tried to listen to the pre-released songs as little as possible, because Kelela is an expert in world building, but my gosh 'Contact' is just *chef's kiss*, the way the production ebbs and flows and Kelela glides over it with those velvety vocals.

I've been missing and yearning for new music from Kelela, releasing the same year as my other fave Jessie Ware is a dream. Top 2 albums of the year confirmed.

This is riveting. Echoing the posts above, Raven and Bruises also stopped me by my tracks but I'll add Fooley and its dark, grimy atmosphere, and Enough For Love with its hypnotizing production as standouts as well. Far Away acting like a reprise of Washed Away, making the entire album come full circle.... the whole thing is such a journey. I love how each track flows into the next, much akin to a DJ Mix. Speaking of, it reminds me I've never given the Aquaphoria mixtape from a couple years back a proper listen. I feel like its ambient leanings foreshadowed this album's more understated and vibe-y second half so I'll have to hunt it down after I recover from this.

edit: In case anyone is curious to hear Aquaphoria.
