Kelly Clarkson - Chemistry (Deluxe)

The songs on My December are half great, half garbage and its time to let the light in and acknowledge it. I Am Me is a better album than My December. A Little More Personal is a better album than My December. My December has about 6 great songs that needed to be reproduced.

I don't think Clive Davis should have called Kelly a shitty writer because she isn't one. I do think Kelly should have grabbed that 5 million dollar check and sprinted to the nearest studio to record Black Hole.

Sis, what have you been smoking? A Little More Personal better than My December? She should have recorded Black Hole? It’s a pile of garbage and Kelly shouldn’t have even been offered flop songs from a flop Lohan record.

I….My December is a great album and my favourite Kelly album. I know it has some mixing/mastering issues but it’s still great. Lindsay’s album is great too! No need to trash it.

I’m confused by people’s reactions to the new songs because…I love them so much. Maybe I just have shit taste but ‘I hate love’ is just so fun and catchy. That chorus is lodged firmly in my brain and it has the best production so far. I also love her delivery of the verses. Even though the lyrics are a bit silly she sells them with her vocals.

‘Red flag collector’ might be the best one so far? It tries something new and even though it’s a bit chaotic I think it kinda works? It’s also the a really great Clarkson chorus. The lyrics are hilarious too, I love them. I don’t know, I think the trumpet and arrangements make it standout and it’s one of her more sonically interesting songs.

Really the only song I haven’t really warmed to yet is ‘favourite kind of high’ but even that song isn’t bad, it’s just…basic. Kelly has never really had songs that standout from a production standpoint so I’m a bit surprised you’re all so chocked about the production?

I Hate Love grew on me immensely. It’s turned into my most played track of the bunch now that I’ve played out Mine.

Red Flag Collector is fun, on first listen. Kind of tired of the Vaguebooking lyrics, though, and the production sounds jarringly low quality to me? But hey, always nice to revisit Pop Rock Kelly.

Red Flag Collector is easily the strongest single since Mine. The chorus is fantastic. Again though some production choices keeping it from truly popping off. But a good song is a good song.

What we're not going to do is shit on My December when there's plenty else to criticize currently!

I actually returned to My December a little while back when the dual leads were released and it holds up for me. I understand that through a specific lens (mixing/mastering) it fails, but I think that's a limiting way of approaching it as an album? Like yes, it does sound crunchy. Do I care when she's singing her ass off and delivering these incredibly visceral lines about depression and suicidal ideation? No!

Pop music emphasizes polish but I think I can be a conduit for expression just like any other genre. To say My December is a bad album because it isn't mixed well feels like deliberately missing out on what pop music can do.

I love this song and think it's the strongest yet. It's what I was hoping for when she started talking about the album.

I can’t believe they are truly just uploading this to YouTube. This is the biggest shit show of an album campaign. And what makes me saddest is that instead of realizing that she and Atlantic have made horrific decisions, she’ll just see the album charting at #84 as proof she should just be a talk show host and forget her music career.

While we’re on the topic of My December, I’d like to make some noise for Be Still…nnnyaaaass!

I’ve kinda deliberately stopped listening to any of the tracks she’s been releasing from the album post Mine/Me just because I don’t want to have already heard a chunk of the album before it comes out. Ya know? Excited to still hear the whole thing but everyone’s reactions to the newer tracks have me ~concerned a bit.

This is what pisses me off. There has to be better stuff on the album, and there are unquestionably easy ways to push them better than this. The whole things feel like an afterthought. Chucking out a new song every week with no promo makes zero sense.

I don't know maybe Meaning of Life set my expectations unreasonably high...but so far, only Me and Favorite Kinda High are sticking. They both have catchy melodies, great vocals and are really good, not quite great. Mine is decent too but maybe takes more time to grow (on me). For me, there are only 3ish Kelly albums that are solid front-to-back, so if I only end-up using 5 tracks it wouldn't really be any different than Piece, Thankful, Dec... etc I'd love another Stronger, Meaning..etc quality-level project eventually though assuming her tv success doesn't fuck those odds completely.

I don't know who is to blame for the shit show of a campaign - I know a lot is maybe out of everyone's hands - but in the latter half of her career Kelly has been rather baldly proud of how not industry she is... and that's a great, endearing selling point, but there also maybe comes a point where you're not really advocating for yourself because you've disengaged from a section of the business you think you're bad at, or you're just exhausted by. No videos, no social media presence, no effort in pushing any kind of product to hardcore fans (there are THREE things on her store?!), no interviews. I think how badly things are going are kind of a reflection of that; where over the years, the things that she has viewed as priorities in music have dwindled and dwindled to the point where, well... she sounds amazing belting it out for two minutes a day, five days a week on her talk show.

I don't really mean any of that as a slight either. I get it. Kelly did her fighting at a very young age for years and has reaped the rewards and to be honest she's only one of several popstars of her generation who got their battle scars young, amassed their fortunes, and... probably don't have the energy for the nonsense any more. It's just a little ironic how the same qualities that made her so unique and intriguing at the start of her career are the things that are killing it now, but I guess young artist railing against the establishment for her vision is a little different to a very comfortable middle aged artist thinking it's shallow to care about the business side of things. And I think it very much is that, to a slight degree at least.

These songs are also just corny as fuck, and kind of shambolic, sorry, which is kinda shocking because even as Kelly the persona has become a Live Laugh Love coffee mug, she's generally remained a sharp and astute pop songwriter with a good ear and I don't really hear that here so far. These two-bit productions. It's all been very crying laughing emoji, to be honest.

I was hoping the long, nasty divorce might change this path, invigorate her with creativity and passion for it again but perhaps it's done the opposite...
