I mean I'm not even a Kim stan nn but those first two are over ten years old. And the rest seemed to have reached certified double woodchips on the charts, so I don't really think she's copying anyone by using this sample in particular?

If anything she's just copying the trend of sampling an old dance song, like what Bebe Rexha and Charli/Rina did.

He/Him
She should’ve just bullied Charli into releasing this when it was having its viral TikTok moment if she was so insistent on sampling her way to a hit.

he / him
Looks like there is some sort of discount on the Better Off Alone sample. A Show Me Love tea.

They just played this new song on Radio 1 Dance so she might have some competition in the UK and at least this one is ethically sourced.

This drama is KILLING ME I hope the Sam Feldt song is a hit. How pissed would you be if you secured the feature then this smashed before you fff

Is sampling way more common in the past 5 or so years or am I just way more aware of it than as a teenager?
I do feel so when it comes to pop maybe?
The mid 00s had a big period where every dance hit sampled like 1 line from an 80s song, the late 00s had things like Hotel Room Service and Right Round (though I guess in rap it's always been common) so it isn't exactly new but it does seem a lot lately (also more and more songs where I remember the original being released, but that's definitely an age thing)

It’s definitely more present for a couple reasons: artists selling the rights to their catalogs so the publisher wants to profit, and also everyone is so scared they’ll be sued for sharing even the slightest similarity with another song (thanks to the Robin Thicke/Marvin Gaye case) that they credit out of fear dd

Artists and big songwriting teams used to stay away from sampling because they hated giving publishing up but since the past 3-4 years where the hardest nut to crack (radio) started being very receptive to samples and interpollys it's come back with a bang. Now artists feel it's okay to not make as much coin if it means radio play, a hit that's gonna bring soon con, a possible tour etc etc.

It's not sampling, though. It's been more common for years to have the sample recreated as it's ultimately cheaper.

There's way less money in publishing any ways these days - major labels earn millions per days from streaming with publishing royalties being around 10% on average to be split amongst the songwriters and publishers - so why not use a hook from a song that was a big hit to give a track more chance of being successful...
