Kim Wilde UK Singles Rate 1981-2021 NO1 REVEALED RATE CLOSED

I have to say the rate is going pretty well so far. No tears or heartbreak from me yet at what has been given the boot.

I can sort of understand the comment above with regards to Love Moves production sounding a bit cheap compared to Close. I wonder if it was a 1990 thing (another example Liberty by Duran). I just wish they hadnt used pretty much the same keyboard sound for over half the songs on the album which for me has that slight cheap sound. Btw, i have huge affection for the album but can also see its flaws too.

Im not complaining but am surprised Child Come Away and Dancing in the Dark are still in. Wonder if they will crack the top 30?

Time for the next 2 to go. This track I must admit was new to me. I do not remember it from the time, it's a pretty good song, lively and one of the better tracks I have heard from Love Moves.

Comments Include

"A bit too sickly sweet for me" (RaggedTiger)

"This one was too sweet melodically and lyrically, could have been a UK hit though with an uplifting housey type remix." (Blaah)

"Gorgeous song-should’ve been another hit single. Love Moves… is such an under rated album." (CasperFan)

"Nice sentiment!" (Berserkboi)

"How they went from the brilliance of everything on Close to such cheap production with banal lyrics I’ll never understand." (DiscoBlister)

Heck, having seen the performance video from the black dress era, I change my score to 14….

Love Moves is just an odd collection after the quality of Close and not to pre-empt some of my comments, the single choices were bizarre. Everything that was done right for Close was done wrong for Love Moves imho.

Liberty is a whole different topic but most 80s artists struggled with the end of the decade. The only successes were really Paul Young and Go West. I do love Liberty though, it’s such a hot mess but an album that was influenced by artists like Public Enemy, PWEI and Madchester, meeting Duran was always going to sound hodgepodge!

The late 80s were just a commercial graveyard for almost everyone associated with the era. There were also machinations taking place at MCA which might have affected the marketing and A&R strategy of Love Moves being so off-piste. There's no doubt it wasn't in the same class as Close but there should have been at least 2 or 3 decent chart hits in there.

It's interesting you cite those two because CBS were sending poor PY from pillar to post in an attempt to get the right sound for him, and album out of it (the process took 3 years), while Go West had to wait for Pretty Woman and a change in sound (from synth pop and wannabe yacht rock to white R&B swingbeat) before Chrysalis would actually let them finish their 3rd album.

World In Perfect Harmony is my first 10 to leave, it's such a euphoric uplifting song. Love Moves is my second favourite Kim album after Close, it's so much stronger than it's reputation would have you believe. I'm still waiting for that deluxe reissue!

00s pop/rock Kim is my least favourite of her eras but Together We Belong is a brilliant song. A great discovery of this rate. Really anthemic.

Really surprised Cherry Pop haven't got the rights for a deluxe Love Moves yet, I would have thought Universal would give them, given Teases and Another Step.

Time for a couple of 80s tracks to wave bye-bye. This not disimiliar to Love Blonde, has something that puts it heads and shoulders above that track.

No32 Rage To Love

Comments Include

"Just because it sticks out on the album. The 7" remix really elevates it for me. A deserved hit." (RaggedTiger)

"Third cracker off Teases and Dares, completely different to the first two, a rockabilly romp!" (Blaah)

"
A slight dip in quality from the previous 2 singles but the biggest hit on the album. Another one that I like more than I think when hearing it." (CasperFan)

" Pretty throwaway" (Berserkboi)

"Still a staple on my Wilde playlists. Great songwriting, excellent melody" (Andsov)

"Every time I hear Rage To Love nowadays it sounds better than I expect it to, but. I mean I don’t recall actively hating it as such, it is catchy enough and Kim looked cool in the video, but yeah… rockabilly and I don’t gel! Don’t get me started on Hold On Tight by Samantha Fox." (DiscoBlister)

And just sort of the Top 30, a track I did not like at the time, but has grown on me over time.

No31 Dancing In The Dark
Score 169.70 Average 7.07 Highest Score 10 (WhatKindOfKylie, YourLeadSinger) Lowest Score 2 (Sprockrooster)

Comments Include

"When I first heard this, I disliked the intro which put me off. Over the years I have grown to love this tune. Just a great pop tune" (RaggedTiger)

"Much better than Love Blonde but the hit machine was clearly struggling for sure fire material in 1983." (Blaah)

"By no means a bad song but you can tell this is not a Wilde song.(I do like the key change)" (CasperFan)

"Very of its time but BOP!" (Berserkboi)

" This song is just breaming with potential, but is ends up a little flat. The verses are very weak, and Kim sounds distanced and uninterested" (Andsov)

" Must’ve looked great on paper to have Nile Rodgers produce Kim’s new single, and the production is indeed nice and slick. Maybe too slick, as the actual song doesn’t really grab you. Where is the chorus?" (DiscoBlister)

Aah, Rage To Love - my least favourite single. I really don't like rockabilly as a genre and always thought this sounded more like a Shakin' Stevens song than a Kim Wilde one which is definitely not a compliment! I never understood how this was on the same album as the excellent synthpop singles The Second Time and The Touch, or how this was somehow a bigger hit. My zero may seem harsh but I've always hated this song, had to skip it when playing an album and never want to hear it again so I feel it's justified.

Dancing In The Dark however is a criminally underrated bop!
