Kim Wilde UK Singles Rate 1981-2021 NO1 REVEALED RATE CLOSED

Onto Wednesday's rate leavers and into the Top 30, and a track forme that is just OK, not bad but once again typical 90's.

No30 In My Life
Score 173.40 Average 7.53 Highest Score 10 (WhatKindOfKylie, IdRatherJack, Andsov) Lowest Score 4 (Blaah)

Comments Include

"Have Always found this a bit weak. I was disappointed when I heard this on the singles collection for the first time and it isn't strong enough to follow If I Can't Have You." (RaggedTiger)

"Bit generic, not hooky enough" (Blaah)

"Bop that slightly lacks in melody" (Berserkboi)

" I am not rating the dreadful version from the music video. The original version is special to me. " (Andsov)

"The album version is great, 9.5 goes to that. The single mix murdered the song." (DiscoBlister)

Up next a track that once again I don't remember from it's release and listening back it's another I can't really get into, is it a dance ballad? I can't really place it. Not bad as I do like the melody.

No29 Heart Over Mind
Score 174.50 Average 7.58 Highest Score 10 (Andsov) Lowest Score 3 (DiscoBlister)

Comments Include

"Another song which after being remaster on the recent hits comp came to life for me. I think there more obvious single choices on 'Love Is' but it doesn't detract from this being a lovely song." (RaggedTiger)

"Pleasant tune but there were better tracks on Love Is shurely…" (Blaah)

"Another strange single choice for second single- nice but not quite Million Miles is it" (CasperFan)

"Very good!" (Berserkboi)

"Personal fave alert! I have such strong and specific memories from this era. Listening to Heart over Mind takes me right back - I can remember feelings, conversations, books I read and even smells from listening to this" (Andsov)

" Whoever chose this utter dud as the follow-up to Love Is Holy over Million Miles Away, I Believe In You & Who Do You Think You Are (and Birthday Song!) must’ve been insane and an idiot in general. It’s badly produced, lacks anything resembling a proper chorus and makes her sound like she has a flu. How to totally kill any momentum your last single has generated." (DiscoBlister)

Love love love In My Life (the original version, not the dreadful West End 7" mix which completely ruins the song). The Singles Collection 1981-1993 was the first Kim Wilde album I bought and it came out the month I left home and moved away to a different city for university and I played that album constantly in my Walkman for months. It's such a nostalgic song for me as it takes me right back to that exciting time in my life (pun intended).

It's time for the next couple to leave the rate, beginning with a later Kim track, yes she has went very rock orientated of late but this track has something to set it higher than some of the others in the same ilk, it's melody and the fact that it is very catchy helps.

No28 Kandy Krush
Score 176.00 Average 7.65 Highest Score 10 (YourLeadSinger, Blaah, CasperFan, EricGeneric) Lowest Score 6 (WhatKindOfKylie, PhoneticsGirl, EpicChocolat, DiscoBlister)

Comments Include

"Cracking follow up to Pop Don’t Stop, really quite heavy sounding but still full on pop." (Blaah)

"Love the noise rock sound for her!" (Berserkboi)

That brings us to the track that had the first 12 to fall. I must admit to not remembering a lot of Kim's 90's output, this track included but it is one of the better singles I think.

No27 Time
Score 180.75 Average 7.85 Highest Score 12 (NanaFan) Lowest Score 2 (Andsov)

Comments Include

" Was disappointed and surprised this was released instead of Can't Get Enough. Didn't think it would be a hit. The
Pop Don't Stop Hots comp maybe love this single more" (RaggedTiger)

" It might have been a better lead off single but MCA did choose the wrong singles in the UK, as this was too 1988. Good song though, in a You Came style." (Blaah)

"Just glorious-a real shame this was overlooked by the British public." (CasperFan)

" LOVE!" (Berserkboi)

"I’ve noticed the love for Time in here, it’s sweet. Unfortunately I don’t share it" (Andsov)

"At the time I found this just too fluffy, uninteresting and even dated, still do. It’s cute, but that’s it. Guess it’s trying to be another You Came. It isn’t." (DiscoBlister)

Not Time, not yet. I assumed this would be a Top 10 cert. I love this track, it’s very late 80s SAW style and really is a what could have happened if Kim worked with SAW. It’s not one of the amazing Close singles, which I guess will here for a lot longer, but it’s the Kim track I listen to most and is a largely undiscovered pop gem

Hang on a minute, did someone mention Child Come Away? It's departure is close but first at 26, a track that wasn;t a single in the UK, and revisiting it made me wonder why not? It's a very strong song in my opinion.

No26 House Of Salome
Score 181.00 Average 7.86 Highest Score 11 (Berserkboi) Lowest Score 3 (WhatKindOfKylie)

Comments Include

"Probably would have flopped as the potential 3rd single in the UK as she had left RAK by then but it sounded like an obvious choice as a single on 1st listen to the album." (RaggedTiger)

"Massive banger!!! Where has this been my whole life??" (Berserkboi)

"As dancing in the dark, this has so much potential but doesn’t quite get there for me. 6,5." (Andsov)

"This Salome temptress sounds rather mystical to me, who IS she? Would’ve made a better second single than Dancing In The Dark." (DiscoBlister)

That brings us to a track which I love but can also understand why it wasn't a Top 40 single for Kim as it is rather dark.

No25 Child Come Away
Score 181.10 Average 7.54 Highest Score 10 (Simes1970, Sprockrooster, YourLeadSinger, PhoneticsGirl, DiscoBlister)
Lowest Score 2 (NanaFan)

Comments Include

"Possibly a bit too dark and moody to be a hit in 1982 as tastes were becoming more commercial and pop in the charts. Wonder if should have been released as a double A-side with Ego." (RaggedTiger)

" It never struck me as a hit single and it wasn’t." (Blaah)

"Great storytelling." (CasperFan)

"Liking that melody!" (Berserkboi)

"She really had some gloomy lyrics didn’t she. War, suicide, tinnitus, airport chaos and traumatized children. Jolly" (Andsov)

" ”No I won't give you reasons so don't ask why.” Rub it in my face, whydoncha? I fucking need to know why. What exactly happened on that beach that night? What made the light in her eyes go out? Was she a victim of a violent attack? Or domestic violence, as she was thought to be ”Happy with the people she knew, but then no-one can tell”… Bad boyfriend? But why then was it her that was taken away in the police car and not the attacker, if she was the victim? Unless she had killed that person of course... But then what the hell was the message in the sand saying ”She is mine” all about? Who was this ”she”? A lesbian lover she had killed? Or maybe, gasp, she had given birth to an unwanted baby and buried her on the beach?! THE FANS NEED TO KNOW." (DiscoBlister)

I used to dislike this one but it's grown on me a lot. The middle-eight makes up for the muted verses and down-tempo choruses.

I guess it might be a personal favourite of hers to be included on The Singles Collection considering it flopped?

There's a whole album's worth of material there.
