Everyone just calm the hell down. Kesha's Japanese bonus diary entry has finally fallen. Imagine my surprise watching this...well, I won't say
ascend, since it didn't even make the top half of our entries. But it certainly managed a nice placement for a song that I bet 90% of you didn't even know existed before this rate. Perhaps being fresh was its biggest advantage. I know it usually works for
me.
Anywho, yes, for as much as we kii about Japanese bonus tracks, this actually is one. It seems to be a bit of a rarity nowadays for a new song to go onto the Japan edition; every album in this rate has a Japanese deluxe, but 'Emotional' is the only stone-cold new recording. Taylor and Katy opted for bonus DVDs with music videos, Lorde and Kelly included remixes of their first singles, and P!nk did a cover of Jefferson Airplane's 'White Rabbit' which I hope you are all fucking grateful I didn't make you score.
'Emotional' is...real on the nose, in that it's basically Kesha laying bare her insecurities to the point of saying
RJF people who say she can't sing make her want to die. I'm guessing this raw-nerve level of honesty got some people bumping up their scores, but let's hear from the voters shall we?
ericcccc provides some insight into how, perhaps, this got past the first thirty eliminations: "The Japanese bonus track once again comes through. I can see why it wasn’t included; the sound doesn’t really fit in, but it’s so much better than the rest of the album." I do think the poppier and more electro production could have given this a boost as well. The girls like that shit.
kalonite gives it the same score, an 8.5, and says, "I hadn't listened to this before now, but it's pretty great."
GimmeWork also stans. "Much better than your average bonus track. Her raw, honest lyrics really elevate the song in a way that typically only a ballad would do for me."
"This is just… too much. It was left off the main album for a reason," says
sexercise. "Kesha has a song called 'Emotional'?" asked
dodoriazarbon, when I said he had forgotten to score it.
Posh Spears tries to slip in some promeaux. "When it comes to 2017 songs titled 'Emotional' I have to say that mixtape chanteuse Miss Charli eh eh XCX takes the cake, but this is nice I suppose."
Heartthrob does too, you girls ain't slick. "Not the best 'Emotional' track by a pop girl in 2017 (insert link to Charli here), this 'Emotional' earns some points for its honest and personal lyrics, even if it’s easy to see why its electro-production was left off the standard version of this album."
Slice of Life enjoys it quite a bit. "I understand why this wasn't included in the standard edition because this doesn't exactly follow the ~organique~ narrative of the album BUT... I think I like this better than at least half of the standard album dddddd. There's something about that icy production and Kesha's delivery that really speak to me."
"I don’t even know what this song is but it gets a 5," shrugs
stereosalt.
joe_alouder calls it "far too on the nose in an era that has usually focused on the bright and the life affirming."
Raichu says "I’m glad this was left off the album. It’s not up to anything at all."
"Woah," gasps
constantino, "not the Japanese Bonus Track being better than ⅔ of the main album. Even though it’s production doesn’t fit with the rest of Rainbow, it should’ve been included on the basis of its huge chorus and the punchy lyrics."
CasuallyCrazed hints at controversy to come: "Very similar to Taylor’s 'Delicate,' except somehow even worse." Eeep.
Trouble for Paradise says, "I really enjoy the production of this song but understand why it was left off the album since it really doesn't fit sonically. Kesha's lyrics are beautifully human and her vocals match it perfectly."
