Welcome to KPJ's first ever yearly rate for male K-Pop artists!
Before we get to the good stuff, I feel a little introduction is necessary to explain why I am doing this rate (my first one as a host).
As a forum dominated by homosexuals of the male kind, our tastes have historically been more aligned with female vocalists and divas... and K-Pop certainly has no shortage of those! We all love our girl groups and female soloists. My own taste for the ten years I've frequented the main forum has also largely stayed true to this, with exceptions here and there.
However, something changed in February 2020 when I discovered the infamous,
But why is that? What is it about K-Pop boys that managed to make me Stan with a capital S, something that no western male artist had done before? I think it must be said that while the K-Pop girls gave me a dose of familiar over-the-top pop extravaganza... it was still something relatively familiar, and not that different from what the best western big pop girls served, though of course with its own Korean flavor. But what really caught my attention was how consistently the boys managed to keep up with similar levels of spectacle and sheen. The choreographies, the concepts, the variety of sounds and flavors, all being performed by cute boys wearing make-up and gorgeous outfits that looked straight out of a game or anime, and an endless stream of behind the scenes contents, shows, consistent releases throughout the year... how did I not get into all this before??
It was all so much bigger than most of the bland, beige displays of mediocrity and from their western counterparts. I mean...
This is getting a bit long, so let me stop myself here. All in all, this rate is a way to celebrate the best material that these talented artists have released over the past year. And while I know male artists are still not nearly as popular as female ones, even in KPJ, I feel like there's a decent amount of people here that champion their efforts, so why not have a rate where they can all shine and take the top spots, since @Slice of Life’s amazing KSOTY Rate is understandably dominated by the girls? A little affirmative action, if you will. Kii.
Even if you're not familiar with boy groups, why not give it a try? This is the cream of the crop, KPJ regulars' handpicked song selection, so I'm sure you could end up surprising yourself with what you discover, as others have before! I promise that it’s not all “noise” (although there are a handful of songs here that fit that descriptor fksdjfk).
