I feel like Vernon's problem is that he doesn't feel that dynamic. I think pop punk needs really punchy vocals in order to work (it's why so many pop punk bands have a very similar type of vocalist) and I just don't think Vernon is that dynamic of a vocalist or a performer. His whole schtick is that he's constantly serving the same face.

Also, excuse me, I love pop punk and I've allowed so many cringy lyrics. But something about the "put a muzzle on me, I'll spit in your mouth" goes beyond cringy and make no sense to me at least.

Yes!!!! The vocal delivery is the whole problem. Contrast that with someone like Woodz on I Hate You. Even if one doesn't like his vocal choices at least there are choices and dynamics to have opinions about.

BEST JAPANESE SONG

1. Ring - TXT

11 points / 3 votes

2. SO GOOD - DRIPPIN

8 points / 2 votes

So this is another category that got a bit messier than I expected. See, when I said "Best English/Japanese Song" I thought it was pretty obvious that I was talking about original non-Korean releases from artists who usually release music in Korean. You know, like TWICE The Feels, STAYC Poppy... But a lot of you voted for songs which either: 1. Already are competing in the main rate and 2. Are from artists whose solo career is already entirely English based (usually both of these things). So I'm gonna ignore those because that's no fun + would kinda spoil main rate results and showcase just the Japanese ones that would have been in the podium (I'll probably edit this post later to include everything).

In first place we have Ring by TXT, a pre-release b-side from their third Japanese single album. There's not much to say, it's a pretty midtempo that is neither too ballady or too boppy, something I'm always very into for some reason. It's very J-Pop, very cute anime soundtrack, Taehyun and HueningKai carry the chorus as usual, and I love the bridge. Funnily enough this mellow song even received a bit of choreography for the Japanese dates of their last tour, which you can see below.

In a year where the group stayed largely within #cool, #edgy styles, DRIPPIN's SO GOOD provided an oasis of cuteness to fans who were more into the Free Pass vibe. It's me, I'm fans. And this is sooo cute and upbeat, whistling hook included, sorry! You just know if a flop girl group released this some parts of this subforum would be calling for them to receive a Pulitzer, kii.

All other songs that received more than one vote are competing in the main rate, except for DPR Ian's Calico, Jackson Wang's Cruel and OnlyOneOf's ズルい女 (Zurui Onna).

Our first 11 elimination is Don’t Regret, a song by Wonho, who also just happens to be one of the two acts whose haters are so extra that I had to implement the Minimum Average Artist rule, kii. Can you guess the other one? It’s very poetic in a way ddd

Wonho’s solo career quickly established him as a reliable provider of polished dance-pop angers, but it’s not really surprising they went with something more "emotional" for his last release before enlisting, and I guess to also showcase a different side of him as a performer. I don’t think many people realize that he also co-writes and co-produces most of these songs, so props to him!

For the most part I think this track was a rock-solid (heh) effort and it does tug on my heartstrings a bitsy, but this time I have to agree that he himself is the weak link here, as a vocalist. Lowest scorer @Attis (2.75) comments: “His Myah Marie moment in the chorus.” Well I don’t know about that, but miss Myah is apparently indeed getting that Korean coin: she was one of the writers on TXT’s Sugar Rush Ride. Everyone, please keep streaming despite that!!! @eccentricsimply (3) is not here for the flaccidity: “This song is limp. Completely limp. And as someone who dislikes his voice, something that is meant to highlight his vocals is simply never... ever going to interest me. Good for him for trying something different from his other stuff I guess.” Well, there’s one compliment here, so that’s a win in my book x

A chunk of our voters reviewed this with a resounding collective “...OK?”. @enjoy (6) doesn’t find it particularly offensive: “This type of stadium rock-ballad affair feels a bit basic. It could have been worse i suppose.” @Christopher (6.5) comments: “It's fairly nice, but even Wonho can't wrest this midtempo affair from the doldrums of ho-humness.” Well, have you tried watching the MV? He still found a way to be shirtless in it! @chrisjche (7.5) says: “He sounds really nice on this one!”

@Wills (5.5) mentions another Wonho song: “Got this confused with Don't Hesitate, which is infinitely better.” Hmm I don’t know about infinitely, but I guess that would have fared a little better in this rate. It’s a bit too repetitive but it does bop slightly! @MmmDani (6.5) longs for concert tickets but has issues with the production: “This is probably a 10 at a concert. I’m not into the drum selection.” Even known Wonho-enjoyer @boom bazooka joe (8) isn’t crazy for this one: “Wanted more from his last song pre-enlistment but I enjoy this a lot.” Maybe he should drop a Storage of ONF on us? How about that? :^)

Poor @Salami (11) had this to say about his Boy Boost submission: “This doesn't sound like his other songs and maybe that's why I like it so much.” (Wait why is this highkey shady as fuck ffffff) “I love the first bit of the song which you don't get again until the end, it's a nice touch. It's a really easy listen, similar to my entry for KSOTY22, I think I just looked out for easygoing music last year. I don't know really what else to say about this song, it just is my favourite male K-Pop song of 2022.” A bit of a scream that this song's biggest fan here is a straight guy. See folks, it really is all about the music not the tits bling!
