Apparently it's OK for everyone in this sub-forum to thirst over male idols, post said male idols' chest, ass, arms, etc in gifs, in previous Rate threads, in previous Readers' Polls threads, but if I want to make a fun little unserious game out of it then it's too far. The puritan council decided that this will
not stand, so I was told to remove the "specific body parts" session of the side rate. My god, won't somebody think of how these poor grown men will be so upset that a couple dozen f-words on a pop music forum are fawning over the body parts that they work so hard on and love to show off on stage with a cheeky smile for the unison scream of thousands of girls!
No, I will not hear
a word about "b-but what if we were rating female singers tits??". Well, guess what? Men and women are not the same. They don't have the same lives, they don't experience the same oppressions, their social roles and power levels are not the same. The weight of the gay male gaze on (assumedly) straight men is NOT comparable to the weight of the straight male gaze on women. So to even think about pulling that card here is just... It's giving "reverse racism".
Not to mention that this entire rate is first and foremost focused on celebrating these men's artistic output, we aren't dudes in 2004 complimenting Britney's tits while thinking she's a dumb bimbo. I didn't even want to add any negative/worst categories to the other poll. Funny how everyone turns a blind eye to the massive hate and jokes and pile ons and "heterophobia" jokes on someone like Ed Sheeran, but then the one part of PopJustice that actually celebrates and uplifts male artists is subject to this... intervention.
But you know what? That's fine. I can understand how some people might look at the thing and raise an eyebrow, I really can. But in the end it's still a poorly considered knee-jerk reaction based on fear of the ever so elusive "optics". That is my opinion. So yeah, I will do what was asked, but not without first saying what I truly think, as I wasn't given a chance to defend myself directly to the mods, only relayed a few quotes of what they said regarding the situation. And speaking of mods, I can't help but feel especially sad because I
did share my plans beforehand with
@Slice of Life and he gave me the green light. Maybe the mistake was mine in not consulting other forum mods, maybe it was his mistake in giving me the go ahead without doing so himself. It doesn't matter anyway and I don't blame him for this or hold any bad feeling for him.
But out of the things that were asked of me, what I will
not abide by and will not accept is the notion that the "Favorite Suspiciously-Fruity Oppa" is also ~problematic~. I'm sorry but
come the fuck on. The term fruity-oppa is a running inside joke of the sub-forum at this point and no, it's not sexuality speculation. It's really not that serious. Of course I'm not asking you all to vote on who you think is most likely to be an actual homosexual, just who is your personal favorite fem-acting idol, of which there are many. Maybe the wording is not great, whatever, but if you spent more than a couple days on the subforum you know that that's not what we are doing here. Is it really a crime to have a few kiis about an idol knowing unreleased Bebe Rexha songs or being a bit limp wristed when doing choreography? Give me a break. I removed "suspiciously", is that OK now?
I'm not gonna lie, this whole thing made me feel extremely shitty and singled out. It feels really, really unfair and backwards. It sucked all the excitement I had to keep this rate going even on a slower year. I'm not going to cancel it and disappear, which was my first instinct, but.. well. I don't really know how to wrap this up or even what to expect in response, but I said what I had to say.
And you
better believe my petty ass is going to report every single instance of someone posting a sExUaLiZed, obJecTiFyIng male idol gif from now on.
