Highlight manages to enter KPB this time after the excellent NOT THE END failed to make it in the 2021 edition. 2nd Gen representation! For those who don’t know, Highlight debuted way back in 2009, but used to go by the name B2ST (BEAST) before 2016. This is their 2022 title track Alone.
Hmm… I don’t know about this one, you guys. This is pleasant enough but I’m kinda tired of these tracks that coast along solely on the basis of their sleek disco-ish groove… I needed a stronger melody here, a chorus with ups and downs. I rated this a bit higher than Same Scent because while it has the same flat melody problem, soft-disco is at least more to my taste than stale-tropical. But still, this pretty production alone just doesn’t cut it for me, though it is nice to listen to as background music (this sounded way shadier than I intended, I swear).
@Wills (4.5) has also had it, officially: “You mean there are those among us who aren't sick to DEATH of this sound? I swear every single boy group (and some of the girls) have done this exact chorus at some point in the past 2 years. ENOUGH!” Apparently some of the girls are still eating it up, indeed. @boom bazooka joe (6), however, is not one of them: “Every time I listen to this it's like listening for the first time. Meaning nothing sticks.”
@Christopher (7) says: “A decent beat, and the prechorus reminds me of something that's on the tip of my tongue but alas eludes me.” Did you find it out yet, unnie? x @MmmDani (8) enjoys the instrumental, but is still waging war against short songs: “This didn’t catch my attention at first, but the baseline is pretty addictive. It ends a little abruptly for me, doesn’t feel like it fully stuck the melodic landing.” @Untouchable Ace (8.5) has a suggestion: “the verses are great, but the chorus lets it down. in this instance, this song would have benefitted from all members singing the chorus together.”
@enjoy (9.5) can’t make the music not bop: “Not terribly original but this is exactly my catnip when it comes to boy groups.” See, @Wills ? And then we have @Macsun (10): “Fuck My Life FLAWLESS - (that is all)”. Submitter @chrisjche (11) had this to say: “I was a BEAST stan back in the day and I'm so happy they are still around. They have matured really nicely, both sonically and visually. The vocals from all four are top notch, and it was about time for them to do something a little sexier. This is everything I want from a 30-something year old K-Pop male boyband.”

Let's gauuur, my favorite aussie after Kylie Minogue! Jake from ENHYPEN has killer looks, somehow he just has that kind of face made to be adored by teenage girls, but that accent is even cuter (even though it means the other members can't really understand and/or will mimic everything he says in English). Not to mention that smile... And his habit of sticking his tongue out for no damn reason... And being a Good Christian Boy™ who prays before going on stage, which makes him even sexier somehow fffff

I thought SEVENTEEN had already been kicked out...? Just kidding, Bad News is actually the debut of Yuehua’s newest boy group, TEMPEST. This caught my attention at first for the fact that it thankfully doesn’t sound like generic 4th gen BG noise, but as I listened more I realized it just wasn’t that… good? If I wanted this sound palette (bright but str8/non-fruity) I would go listen to Aju Nice or Left & Right, I don’t know!
Making the same comparison, submitter @KimLippington (10) declares: “The best Seventeen song in the rate” Well, it outlasted all of them, so congratulations! @askew (8) does it too: “Kinda gobbled up SVT.” For @FunkyButChic (6.5), however, it’s not a compliment: “Good news: it's not the usual generic racket! Bad news: it's like early Seventeen instead.”
@MmmDani (6) needed more: “The chorus doesn’t do much for me, which is a shame because the second verse’s rap is very tight. It did sneak an extra point for the slick instrumental.” @Christopher (7.5) says: “Another semi-pastiche. It’s got a nice bounce, but I’ll not ever crave this.” @enjoy (7.5) also gives it faint praise: “I don't see this one going too far but i like the vigor and energy this provides. A bit annoying with sing-along chants but whatever it works.”
@chrisjche (8) comments: “Such a strong debut...unfortunate that the momentum has kind of been lost!” Yeah, I feel like when this came out the reception here was pretty positive, but it’s been a bit silent since. SVT stan @boom bazooka joe (10) likes this, of course: “When it comes to 2022 debuts, it's obvious the girl groups blew the boy groups out of the water, but TEMPEST is one of the most exciting debut groups in recent memory, boy or girl, and that is a hill I am willing to die on. This was such a refreshing debut track and they have continued to show their versatility through the last year. Stan Tempest!”

THE BOYZ has many particularly good looking members, but Juyeon is pretty much the face of the group, like... there's no way to watch the MV for The Stealer (KPB20's bronze medalist!), or any of the song's stages, and look at anyone else. Oh wow, I definitely expected more people to vote for him! Maybe this was caused by the slight confusion of some still thinking you could only vote for idols with songs in the rate? Well, either way I'm glad Baekho got to chart... One of the quintessential K-Pop hunks, yes, yes, but also a pretty great vocalist and songwriter, who's had a hand is a lot of NU'EST's discography (who are sadly now disbanded). His only only flaw are those godawful chest tattoos. He and his group mates competed in the second season of survival show Produce 101 in 2017, but Baekho ended up not making it into the final Wanna One lineup with Minhyun... but after the voting manipulation scandal was investigated, it came to light that Baekho was indeed supposed to have debuted with the group, he was one of the victims!

OK, get out of my way, I'm about to stan. TXT doesn't have official positions for its members, but if they did, Yeonjun could fulfill any of them. He has the loveliest singing voice, is a great rapper (who writes his verses), is far and away the best dancer in the group (and one of the best in his generation)... and looks amazing while doing it all. His facial expressions on stage are sooo good! He's the fashion member of the group and always gets the boldest looks for each comeback, and is the only one with an Insta account. He is my (one of my two) ultimate bias(es)... and also has my favorite pair of lips of all time fff

Self-explanatory results, really. TXT's Yeonjun has been very vocal about his views on gender expression (here's a thread on it). So of course when it comes to performing "feminine" choreography, he gives it his all and is not afraid to shake that non-existent ass side to side! His dance challenges last year really cemented his win for this category.
Our second placer is Minhyuk AKA Huta, from BTOB, who went a bit viral with the multiple fancams of him dancing to Antifragile while showing off his muscles and pits. I watched these an embarrassing amount of times ffff The other versions with different outfits aren't on YouTube, here are some Twitter links. The Hype Boy one is also great hehe
And then we have SHINee's fruit supreme, Key, who gleefully uses his Amazing Saturday platform to f*g out on TV for the entire nation. As he should!
