BTOB have yet to get in this rate as a full group, but Lee Changsub’s SURRENDER, his first solo release since coming back from military service and starting doing musicals, is here thanks to @Untouchable Ace (10): “i submitted, i tenned.”
Honestly, this is a pretty expected spot and average for this type of song. @enjoy (6.5) says: “These songs wash over me at this point dd. Enjoyable but basic.” Hm, yeah, I feel like every year we have this kind of smaller agency male soloist synthwave track that is mature and groovy but ultimately harmless and a bit predictable. There are some nicer touches here than usual, though. I really like the filtered backing vocals that pop up in places, and the super long double-chorus.
@Salami (7) comments on the video: “I like that he thought why should I bother dancing in the MV when I can get this girl to do it. It works, something different, I enjoyed it. Nice listen.” And she served! This type of video treatment is sooooo… indie? It’s funny that he does show up but only for a few seconds at the beginning and the end, if only to remind us that this is his song. @chrisjche (8) praises Changsub's pipes: “What a beautiful vocal tone!” This would come off a biT shady as the only thing to comment on if you hadn’t given it an 8 ffff @Macsun (8.75) is surprised: “woah this came out of nowhere for me. Solid!”
@boom bazooka joe (9) is tempted by the BTOBoys: “One of my top rate discoveries! Between this song and Huta being hot and popping bussy to Antifragile, do I need to get into BTOB?” I don’t know bestie, they just had a comeback but all I remember from it is that Huta is not wearing sleeves for most of the video! @Slice of Life (9.5), on the other hand, will stay away: “one of the better surprises of 2022 tbh, like even though i’m a btob/lee changsub anti, i can’t really fault this!!”

What's with all these TXT members charting even when I didn't give them points? Maybe this subforum is developing some taste after all! This time it's Beomgyu, the member with the least amount of lines and vocal ability, but the biggest amount of writing credits! He's the definitely the group's clown and full of energy, but he also gives sensitive emo boy vibes with his reflective diary entries on Weverse or strumming his guitar (especially when he had the long hair). If TXT had official positions, Beomgyu would definitely be the visual, he has that "perfect" princely look. Stream his beautiful composition Maze in the Mirror!

I had to click the video to remind myself what song that was, and I thought "Wow, this is quite nice, perhaps I should have scored it higher!"

Sadly I know all too well how these heifers operate so a lot of 8.5/9s had to be bumped to 10s simply because I know the low scores will be given out like candy.

Today we say goodbye to the only DAY6-adjacent track in this year’s rate, Wonpil’s solo b-side Stranded. After showing some versatility in KSOTY with the boppy OST Like a Fire, this is more familiar territory for him, I think. Wonpil sings about loneliness but in such a sweet, somehow uplifting way. It’s a very cute album track!
Lowest scorer @enjoy (4.5) has a common complaint when it comes to Wonpil: “I find his vocals a bit whiny and nasal.. Lovely instrumentation though.” Whenever someone has a problem with him, that seems to be it ddd It’s not for everyone, but it doesn’t bother me at all! @chrisjche (7) also compliments the choice of analogue sounds: “A nice bop - I enjoy the more live-sounding production, makes it stand out from the other songs on the ballot.” I have to agree, it’s a quality that is kind of rare in K-Pop, and paired with the soft melodies and tempo it provides a warmth that makes the song feel like a hug.
@Salami (5) is once again unintentionally hilarious: “I get nervous seeing a song over 4 mins, I don't have the attention span for that anymore. I hate slagging off people's choices so…it's not unpleasant I'll say that much.” I… This wasn’t a submission akskjskdjd It did well enough to get in the rate via chart points! We love successful b-side campaigns. Wait, how come this charted and the title track didn't? Well, I'll leave a link to it below!
Willow Pill has a lot of stans in KPJ. @nikkysan (9) says “Wonpil can do no wrong.” and @Attis (10) calls him a “Real artiste.” Bestie @boom bazooka joe gives it a (10) and would have given more if he could: “Pretty much 9 out of the 10 tracks on this album would have gotten a 10 from me. Best Korean album of 2022 bar none. Argue with the wall!” Hmm… Maybe I should listen to it, I liked the first DAY6 (Even of Day) album and this song kinda reminds me of it. @RUNAWAY (10) brings up musical theater: “his little Sara Bareilles serve!” Aside from these stans, Wonpil also leaves the rate with a potential new one in @MmmDani (10): “This is where I returned after my first listen-through the playlist, this is where I expect to keep returning.”

I felt like Stranded‘s days were numbered, but I’m pleasantly surprised by the lack of tanking scores. I keep going back to it (and should probably listen to the album). It was one of only four tracks that I gave a 10 (or 11), which is pretty indicative of how much I loved it. Falling in love, unexpectedly, with a new song is one of the nicest feelings in the world. Stranded was the discovery of the rate. It’s a shame it didn’t make it into the top 20, that’s what I’d hoped for it to achieve!

I love Brand New and I’m frankly baffled by the amount of people that seem to… not ffff I little #trivia: the hype man doing the little chants (which I’m sure is a factor for some people’s dislike, because you all hate fun or weird) is Yoo Youngjin, the vocal teacher of several SM idols, and he co-composed and co-produced the song as well.
@eccentricsimply (2) says: “I'm giving this the exact same score I gave it in the KSOTY and a similar commentary: props to him for the fun song, but I don't enjoy it and it sounds like a SuJu reject. I don't like his voice and I also don't care much for him individually. I think it's funny that SM will give a solo to just about anyone if they ask, though.“ Now that you mention it, that’s one of the best things about them. The shade here though ffff
@Untouchable Ace (4.5) mentions “unpleasant elements, especially the obnoxious bass that sounds like it's coming out of a car.” His retro brazilian funk serve! @Salami (6) paints us a mosaic of supposed influences: “It starts off like it's a PSY or 2PM song, and then it goes into SHINee. It doesn't sound all over the place, but it doesn't feel very original.” @nikkysan (6.5) goes a bit more genre-specific: ”Wish I liked this more than I do as Miami/Atlanta Bass is a subgenre I love seeing explored in k-pop (i.e. WooWoo by DIA, Blue Lemonade by Red Velvet, Moonlight Sunrise by TWICE) but the melody is too restrained.”

Jungwon is his group's leader and easily my favorite ENHYPEN member. I love, love, looove his voice, he has such a unique color that immediately stood out to me, it was very recognizable even with the vocal processing mush. Visually, he is cute as button: the huge cat eyes, the dimpled smile, and somehow he has both pinchable cheeks and a sharp jawline. He kinda looks like a twink Baekho fff Not even that clip of him asking Jake if the USA is in Europe could taint him... if anything it made him cuter!
