AY PUT YOUR HANDS UP! YOU MUST BE GETTIN’ ON THE FAME (sic?)! It’s Xiumin from EXO finally making his solo debut after a decade with the group. I love Brand New and I’m frankly baffled by the amount of people that seem to… not ffff I little #trivia: the hype man doing the little chants (which I’m sure is a factor for some people’s dislike, because you all hate fun or weird) is Yoo Youngjin, the vocal teacher of several SM idols, and he co-composed and co-produced the song as well.

@eccentricsimply (2) says: “I'm giving this the exact same score I gave it in the KSOTY and a similar commentary: props to him for the fun song, but I don't enjoy it and it sounds like a SuJu reject. I don't like his voice and I also don't care much for him individually. I think it's funny that SM will give a solo to just about anyone if they ask, though.“ Now that you mention it, that’s one of the best things about them. The shade here though ffff

@Untouchable Ace (4.5) mentions “unpleasant elements, especially the obnoxious bass that sounds like it's coming out of a car.” His retro brazilian funk serve! @Salami (6) paints us a mosaic of supposed influences: “It starts off like it's a PSY or 2PM song, and then it goes into SHINee. It doesn't sound all over the place, but it doesn't feel very original.” @nikkysan (6.5) goes a bit more genre-specific: ”Wish I liked this more than I do as Miami/Atlanta Bass is a subgenre I love seeing explored in k-pop (i.e. WooWoo by DIA, Blue Lemonade by Red Velvet, Moonlight Sunrise by TWICE) but the melody is too restrained.”

@enjoy (7) says: “ehhhh i don't know, why don't i remember any of these songs other than the feeling of mild enjoyment dd?” What’s “these songs” bestie?? @Christopher (7.5) joins them and calls it “Pleasant.” @chrisjche (7.5) is pleasantly surprised: “It's cute! He's never been a standout member of EXO for me, so I had low expectations for a solo debut, but I do enjoy this!”

Now finally the people with taste, hehe. @MmmDani (9) found another new favorite: “On first listen I had to double check that I was still on the right playlist. It’s so unique among these other tracks. It’s gold.” More unintentional shade to the songlist, this year was bad for me!! @boom bazooka joe (9.5) mentions a diva once again: “The Tinashe of K-Pop, I fear!” DIA wishes! @Attis (10) passes divine judgment: “People hating this song won't enter heaven or hell btw, their soul will stuck in lightless limbo of void” And Brand New will be playing there.

After being put on ice for what felt like centuries following the Lucas scandal (which was finally resolved just this week), WayV finally had their long awaited comeback last December with Phantom, and thank god it was one of their best ones. And it’s almost 4 minutes in 2022/23, so we really won! It also got an English version.

This song sets a unique tone from the start to me while still delivering the classic WayV second-gen-style drama, theatrics and overall grandeur. I really love the weirdly ~tribal~ drum beat in a song with this aesthetic and concept, it feels very haunting and black magic-esque. @Christopher (9) comments on the musicality: “I dig the weird beat, and am always a sucker for a seductive whisper and a chromatic descension.” Also liking this part, @MmmDani (6) says: “The verses are the strongest portions here. This is definitely better in concert.” I bet it is!

NCTzen @boom bazooka joe (9.5) name drops a diva yet again. That’s branding! “The low pitched verses make me laugh not gonna lie, but this song is so moody and sexy and Xiaojiah Carey EATS!” I weirdly like the low verses, but I can see how they're a biT cringy. But about Xiaojun, yes... how can he serve both impeccable vocals and also be one of the most ridiculously gorgeous faces in the east-asian pop scene? I feel like him and WayV in general are sooo underutilized by SM. Also praising our DJ we have @eccentricsimply (10): “Never expected to like a WayV song this much but it's my favorite NCT release last year dddddddd see what happens when you let the cunty ones (Ten and Xiaojun) be cunty???” Now that Lucas is out (with WinWin probably having one foot out the door) and the fruitiness balance within the group has shifted, can they just fully embrace making WayV the fag NCT unit already? Inb4 they all are, etc.

@nikkysan (6.5) is not impressed: “This just sounds like 28 Reasons by Seulgi, so it’s not bad but could be so much better. Still the best song released by an NCT unit this year so… take that for what you will.” Speak your truth, king! @chrisjche (7) is also whelmed: “Meh. There's better on the mini album and VIXX does this concept 10x better.” Let me go ahead and link the most popular b-side below then! @enjoy (8) says: “So Google tells me this is yet another NCT sub unit but you know what i kinda appreciate more focused approach in this one rather than going all over the place. Quite stylistic and polished.” You know what, I was gonna clown you for having to google that, but I really appreciate the effort of looking into some more info about the songs presented. If only all voters were this considerate!

@Salami (10) dissects the vibes: “I don't know why, I can't explain it, but this feels very spaghetti western movie to me when I listen to it. Like it's the soundtrack to RDR or something. It doesn't make any sense to me why but I know love this a lot.” Something tells me you mean Red Dead Redemption and not RuPaul’s Drag Race.

We are back, and today eliminating another Boy Boost song. This time it’s KINGDOM’s excellent b-side Illusion, a little retro synthwave number. This is another one the style of Key’s Bad Love / Killer and, of course, The Weeknd Abel Tesfaye. @enjoy (7) throws light shade: “Oh another Blinding Lights knock off? Fine, it kinda bops, i suppose” I’m sorry but I don’t think I could get tired of this style of production no matter how much it’s done! I also get a whiff of Daft Punk in places, all it needed was some more vocoder here and there.

To me this ended up with a fair average, but I’m surprised by some of the lower scores… There’s nothing here to hate, y’all! @Christopher (8.5) dissects the song structure and influences: “Starts off with what could be misconstrued to be an interpolation of "Ain't Nobody's" bass line, and that's never a bad thing, is it? Picks up steam in the pre-chorus, then we get more of my favourite pulsing, driving bass line once the chorus hits.”

Underrated Male K-Pop Artists thread dweller @boom bazooka joe (8) comments: “I love Kingdom's concept so much, but this was the first Kingdom album that I really loved. This isn't my favorite track off of DANN, but it's still a solid ass track. A little The Weekend-y.” Which one would you have picked, bestie? @chrisjche (8.5) says: “Had never heard this, but I'm into it!” @MmmDani (6) wrote: “The opening is much more interesting than the rest of the song. The chorus is a little too repetitive for me.”

@Wills (8.5) comments on the nugu group’s struggles: “Naming their albums after the members is downright cruel, no wonder Chiwoo left the group. Anyways this is quite good, though it would've been nice to see Blinder (their best song to date) nab this spot instead” I went to listen to that and... What in the 2012 Kesha meets 2021 ONF?? It’s pretty good, but I prefer Illusion!

Ranking highly as expected is everyone's favorite aussie hunk, Bang Chan from Stray Kids. Is it fair to say he's the face of the group? I mean, he really stands out, not just for his hot body, but he also has pretty unique features for a K-Pop idol. I was very surprised to find out he isn't mixed! Anyway... Gays and girlies and enbies love handsome men with big noses, right? Besides all that, he seems like a genuine sweetheart, always very appreciative of other K-Pop groups' and artists' in his livestreams, and he's also part of 3RACHA, the trio of Stray Kids members who produce and write most of their tracks. Talented short king!

Interesting, I’m sure you’d have saved this if there was a Stray Kids elimination around the corner. Maybe Maniac is safe for a couple of slots (I hope). Perhaps I should stop making predictions, every one I’ve made so far has been a bad omen.

I like Illusion, it’s really pleasant, although I’ll stand by my 6. I still don’t think that it has enough *bite* for me, it’s a little too inoffensive.
