it’s jarring to me see them so close to the top and over songs in my view are much better and suit this forum’s tastes much more.

I can see where you're coming from. Ballroom Extravangaza would not have survived this rate back in the early days of the sub-forum, as it seems very antithetical to what people liked K-Pop for. However, the reality is we've lost so many users to the abyss and gained a few others from different sub-forums, that you could argue its survival is reflective of the sub-forum's current taste.

Of course, the majority agree on a few things like balladphobia because this is still PJ after all, but the general makeup of voters in these rates has changed so much that we're all bound to come at these things differently (and I say this as someone who gave Ballroom Extravangaza a relatively high score).

This post (and the next one) was meant to go with the Best Rapper result, but oh well! Mark is easily one of the most popular members of NCT, and fans of DREAM in particular were very upset when he "graduated" from the unit. I don't know what else to say, he's quite cute in a very unique way. I love the video below and probably posted it a dozen times:

D-dad?? Minho has been a staple in K-Pop thirst for years now, and only gets better with age. Despite being married to Max Changmin he still gives us plenty of chances to marvel at his marvelous boo- body. Generous king!

I haven’t looked at my scores in so long, but I guess my math says these should go next: ASTRO, DRIPPIN, Wonho, Stray Kids, and Golden Child. Every other song has an 8+ score.

I will say that after the release of S-Class, Maniac seems so much better ddd. I really hope we’re not subjected to S-Class in next years rate - please vote for a B-Side instead if you must support Stray Kids on the June charts!!!

I’m an S-Class apologist, but Ateez’s Bouncy has been scratching the “Stray Kids noisy bop” itch for me this month. I hope we see that one in the rate, I certainly wouldn’t be boosting S-Class just to see it get slaughtered.

I’m stumped on the rest.

Perhaps the hags and girl group stans of yore were making points, then. /s My point is how in the past the whole sentiment on boy groups from the majority was “*listens to BTS’ latest single once* all boy groups release is noise!” despite that not being the case at all but getting people to give boy groups that weren’t shinee a chance was near impossible. I’m glad boy groups are more widely liked nowadays but the positivity is now at the point where songs that would probably be dragged if the likes of Justin Bieber and Harry Styles were to release these songs. Maybe I’m just out of touch (I am turning 30 soon after all ddd).

But I’m also just baffled that people dislike these uptempo dance songs that would probably be beloved of girl groups released them? There’s still this weird stigma around boy groups releasing more upbeat music (not just on here, but the k-pop community) with international fans and think they should only be releasing moody or sexy songs.

Hmm I don't think that's it, at all. Who has a problem with upbeat boygroup songs? It's mostly nuguphobia in my opinion. It takes double the work for these smaller groups to grab the voters' attention compared to groups they already have affection for, know the names/faces behind the voices, etc. This happens to girl groups too, but I think the emotional/parasocial/sexual connection is way stronger an aspect when it comes to boygroup stanhood and creates more of a bias. Some of you bitches are ride or die for the groups you stan, emphasis on the die.

All things considered the better nugu songs still get a good enough result, and there were also plenty of songs from big, big groups that were mercilessly eliminated early because people thought they were shit, so it's not like it's completely unfair.

But I... also don't think these supposedly snubbed songs are that good, in their core, aside from their "style" technically being something we are supposed to like fffffff But that's my personal taste. I also think a lot of them are quite lacking in concept and presentation, and I don't mean lore or deep lyrics, but the whole pop campaign and aesthetics that accompany a big budget single.

Do they though?

What’s funny is in so many ways I want to like and agree with what @nikkysan says despite the fact that, on the flip side, half the songs that I love in this rate are his most hated. So I do really think it just comes down to personal preference.
but the positivity is now at the point where songs that would probably be dragged if the likes of Justin Bieber and Harry Styles were to release these songs.
This isn’t entirely off base, but I just think it also has to do with inherent bias. There’s no use in playing the “if X released X y’all would gag” but that game is played with gg songs and Stans all the time. I can’t tell you the number of bg songs that are released that I think would send this forum into a tailspin (positively) if TWICE or WJSN released them, but at the end of the day — they didn’t, and it’s hard to wax poetic over hypotheticals.

Just as we kickstart the Top 15, we also finally reach the ever elusive 8.0 average point! Took us way too long this year, damn. With that said, this is too low a score for this beauty of a song! Yeowoobi (sunshower in Korean) is probably my favorite song from Onew’s album. The atmosphere it conjures is just perfect, and you don’t even need to understand the lyrics to get the bittersweet feeling, it really does sound like the smell of sudden rain on the pavement during an otherwise sunny day. @eccentricsimply (10) spares no praise for the track: “My fave from the album, I think. Love the vibes, love the vocals, everything is just... chef's kiss.”

@boom bazooka joe (10) names it “B-Side of the year on Album of the year. The production makes it sound like this would be a song that would play at The Bronze (from Buffy), but then you have Onew's gorgeous, crystal clear vocals over it, and the whole thing is this transporting dream. The ‘Your love takes me higher than I've never been’ repearted chorus is so haunting. And WHAT A BRIDGE.” and @enjoy (10) also highlights the absolute best part of the song: “Oh that bridge just builds and builds. This is the right kind of moody for me”. The bridge is seriously amazing… Ending with that heartfelt “goodbye”? An ARTIST. As for the chorus, it almost feels like a mantra, but maybe a little variation would have won over some of the other voters? @nikkysan (8) comments: “My fave off the mini upon release but this kinda grew off me. :/ The chorus is a bit lacking despite the beautiful soundscape.” and @Wills (7.5) says the same thing with harsher words: “Great sonics but his voice is wasted on the shitty chorus” Watch your mouth!!

@Slice of Life (9) simply says “he was on his indie bag with this song". Lowest scorer @Salami (3) explains: “I know he's a good singer and I really like his voice, but this is so boring.” I don’t even think the voice is the main attraction here, impressively! It’s a mood piece, you either get the vibe or you don’t. As @chrisjche (9.5) put it: “Beautiful - love how pensive it all sounds.” Pensive is a good word for it, kinda like a diary entry or an unsent letter.

KPB22 Readers' Poll

FAVORITE DANCER

favorite-dancer.png

1. Yeonjun ♡ TXT

16 points / 4 votes

2. Hoshi ♡ SEVENTEEN

11 points / 3 votes

3. Ten ♡ WayV

10 points / 4 votes

Also taking the second solo dance-related category, we have Yeonjun of TXT again. Like we said before, he is just hypnotic to watch on stage overall. TXT doesn't have fixed positions, but everyone quickly realizes he's the main dancer, there's just a fluidity, sharpness and ease to his moves that stands out.

The thing I notice about Hoshi is the way he completely eats up whoever he's dancing with when he does TikTok challenges with other idols, it's kinda hilarious. And I'm still gutted his excellent single didn't make it onto that year's rate, a massive pop injustice.

Ten also got a vote from me. He gives more ballet, classically trained vibes compared to the other two, which translates just as beautifully to idol choreography. I love him!

Other idols to get 10 points were EXO's Kai, SHINee's Key and NCT's Taeyong.
