I NEED y’all to use your 11 on something that you can see winning. Don’t waste it pleek!!
I never do this though. I’ll hold my head high stanning my favourites.
I guess I just don’t get any satisfaction from my fave going #13 instead of #14
Scream. Salami, never change. <3
For a while, I was afraid a BTS song wasn’t going to be in last place. And that was bumming me out. Not because all of their songs are the worst songs in this rate (far from it), but I feel like these years are symbolic of a certain era of PopJustice; before BTS was “not K-Pop,” they basically caught strays daily in the K-Pop forum while their few fervent stans tried to convince literally anybody that they were worth caring about. (Spoiler alert: it didn’t work.) Eventually, BTS was no longer “considered K-Pop,” and the subforum basically just pretends that they don’t exist apart from a casual mention once in a blue moon. They never chart, people don’t bother supersending their songs to the KSOTY…they might as well not exist.
BUT NOT IN 2018/2019. Nope, you simply couldn’t escape BTS during this time, and therefore, we have the great pleasure (or displeasure, for many) to revisit some of these iconic (for better or worse) tunes that shaped K-Pop during these years.
At #50, we have “Idol.” Idol was featured on Love Yourself: Answer - The 3rd Compilation Album, went #1 pretty much everywhere, went Platinum, was performed all over … it was another one of BTS’ globally successful singles. “Idol” was written by "Hitman" bang, Ali Tamposi, Onika Maraj, Pdogg, RM, Roman Campolo, Supreme Boi and produced by Pdogg, which produced (still produces?) the majority of their stuff.
Whew. Where to even begin with this one. This is truly the travesty of the rate and of BTS’ career, to me. An ugly, cacophonous, poorly sung, horrendously rapped assault to all the senses. Pretty much all the things some of you accused “Hit” by SEVENTEEN for! A lot of your girls were not here for this one. Christopher ponders: “For the love of all things holy, I thought we had all agreed that dance whistles and bandoneóns were left on the Ibizan beach 12 years ago. This track is MESS.” Untouchable Ace also comments on the noise: “No thanks, too brazen. Poor imitation of 'Destination Calabria'” MmmDani is slightly kinder: “This is strangely absent of cringe for me. It’s not soulless at all, so I struggle to actively dislike it. But it’s not something that hypes me up or intrigues me at all.” MacSun gave this a 6, so I’ll let you decide if this is shade or not: “Now I see where ATEEZ got their sound. Interesting hearing these BTS tracks after the fact." yeeungelic recognizes that they can do better: “Absolutely diabolical, this next to fake love is so jarring.” RUNAWAY keeps it simple: “this is the WORST song I have ever heard in my entire life." Spill!
I have…a lot of questions about their rap line. Mostly “why” “how” “must you?” and “could you stop?” I don’t get it friends. Even Fatou came on IG live the other day and commented on BTS’ rap line as “real rappers” (her first lapse in good taste and judgment ever), but I don’t see it. I won’t argue whether their lyrics are good or not, nor pretend that I am a great aficionado of their discography, but their delivery in the songs I have heard is soooo try hard. It’s doing the most and not in a good way. On other songs, it’s a minor gripe, but this song is almost exclusively their rap line, so there’s really no reprieve from it. Slice of Life agrees: “When did their rap line’s rapping become this annoying, what’s happening? Not even the anthemic chorus can save this.”
They were smart, however, to enlist Nicki, who at the time wasn’t married to a sex offender and also just an all and all loser, and her addition to this track was the perfect way to continue their trek towards global domination. Shame it wasn’t on a better track. My 2 is very specifically because “Uh! What's good, Korea? You know I've been a boss for my whole career” is iconic in it’s campness. But then Nicki rambles about John Mayer and a song no one (besides me) has listened to in the last 3 decades, and the whole thing ends up feeling a bit phoned in. Ohnostalgia agrees: “I’ve never been more relieved to hear a Nicki Minaj feature - in the year 2024, no less.” Others saw the Nicki feature as the only thing worth positively commenting on. Nikkysan says one nice thing than goes for the jugular: "Nicki's ironically camp verse aside... this is just tuneless noise. This was when I knew this group could just shit out anything and Armys would blindly eat it up. And the group's output for the last five years has held true to that.” Glitterizer stans, but not foolishly. “nicki takes it from a 10 to an 11 but i'm not stupid enough to waste mine on this!" Smart king. Leedlelee… decides to be a contrarian and think it’s better without her: “Oh wow the years haven’t been kind to this track…I would have given this a 5 if it wasn’t the Nicki version…” Choices! KimLippington segues for me: “Listen, the Nicki verse is fun but it’s so frustrating this made it in when they had so many good album tracks during this period (which more than made up for the increasingly bad singles). Awful. And maybe the ugliest MV of all time to boot.”
Let’s talk about that video. You’re right! It is ugly. Horrible CGI, weird scenes that don’t match. Jimin standing in a pile of BTS heads is literally nightmare inducing. They did a good job making the scenes/coloring match so Nicki not filming anywhere near them isn’t jarring at all, but it still doesn’t make for a good visual experience.
But some of you had nice things to say! eatyourself summons the power of Mr. Saxobeat: “You: make me dance, bring me up, bring me down, play it sweet, make me move like a freak.” Alexandra Stan, I’m so sorry this ugly bitch was compared to you. Joli Chat is a prophet, and also a Nicki stan: “this is probably getting tanked to hell and back; I’m SORRY but “Whats good Korea? You know I’ve been a boss for my whole career” and “slay so much cheese and some egg”? wig, who could do it like Nicki? Certainly not the idol “rappers”, Unpretty rapstar? Dead. Show me the money? Dead. The kpop industry? Dead. They wish they could make bars like those.” And chrisjche recognizes at least one good thing about it: “I find this song quite annoying though there have been some great live performances over the years.” I’ll give you that! I generally don’t like the choreography to this song, but in every live performance I watched, the rapping was way more subtle (which meant, nicer to listen to) and there was WAYY less auto-tune on all of the vocals, so the listening experience is surprisingly better in all of the stages and live performances (not something I would say often with a lot of live vocals from K-Pop ddd.)
Let’s end this post with Salami, who loses their 11. Bestie, why do I feel like this isn’t the first time this has happened to you ddd.
“This is a song that I never listen to just once. It's the last time they were truly great, before they moved into the vanilla phase. I love everything about it, this sound is my favorite thing about Kpop, the festival carnival party sound with all the bells and whistles and horns, like Itzy's That's a No No or Stray Kids' TA. It reminds me of World Cup halftime, the sort of song that would be blasted from the stadium. And Nicki Minaj's rap...I remember I thought it was a bit out of place when I first heard that version but it came on a couple years ago and now "What's good Korea, you know I've been a boss for my whole career" is the best rap lines in any Kpop song. It just is. I could go on for ages about how much I love this song but I'll just end with this which is probably my favorite Kpop performance - it's so much fun especially when the stage has about 1000 people on it and the fake ending turns it up even more:
I'm going to end every post with required viewing material, including videos, signature stages, and dance practice videos. I personally tried to watch at least any music video/performance video and a stage or two for every song before both putting together my ballot and doing these write-ups. You just should watch because some are fun!
