You know how I said earlier how I was getting bummed at the prospect of a BTS song not getting 50th place? Well, I was also getting equally bummed at the idea of all the BTS songs being at the bottom of the rate. Because, as a collective, there are some shit tunes (one of which we’ve already said goodbye to), but some that are excellent, now TWO of which we have said goodbye to.
At #48, we have V’s song “Intro: Singularity.” It was written by member RM and Charlie J. Perry, who also acted as the song’s sole producer. I couldn’t really find out more about him. If he is who I thnk he is based on IG, he’s produced a ton, but nothing I recognized. It charted at #54 in Korea, and acted as the 1st track (labeled as an Intro) to BTS’ 3rd album Love Yourself: Tear.
“Singularity” is an ultra sultry (sultra?) slow jam in which V croons over some electric piano and funky bass. The vibe is giving baby making, even if the lyrics don’t necessarily suggest that? IDK, I did a scroll through of the English lyrics once and I was too tired and hungover to interpret the flowery language, but it wasn’t initially giving “let’s fuck.” Which is fine! I don’t speak Korean so I can think it’s about whartever I want. Especially when he spends most of the music video dancing with a sexy coat rack.
V released a solo album this year called Layover, which feels like a direct evolution from this track. (I don’t know enough about him to know if there was significant solo material released between then and now.) But I don’t think anything on that album matches the level of this. (It’s still good, don’t get me wrong.) To me, this is V’s vibe. In listening to some of their group material, V’s vocals always feel about a quarter beat behind. Not glaring all the time, but he just doesn’t have the punch and staccato in his voice that is needed (IMO) for most pop music.
Here though? I feel like he really shines. His voice is moody and languid and round and he can really mold his way around this type of slow jam. We had lots of comments on his voice. Some great, some … less than great. Slice of Life goes for the jugular while also dragging another one of my faves, and the only other man I’ve seen get such a scathing score from ha in a rate: ”I’m so sorry (I really am) but his voice is just not for me…. It’s like the vocals of that guy from The Rose again, only this time yodeling is not involved (thank you god). But the too-much-air technique that V employs is just as traumatic to my ears and general well-being. So this is a major, MAJOR pass for me.” Bestie, if you don’t quit it! ohnostalgia wants to be set free: ”This man is always “singing” the most boring slow mood pieces so that I can’t get lost in the instrumental while I wait to be freed from the prison of his froggy vocal embrace.
And yet? Half of you love his voice. chrisjche has a request: ”I want more of this for his solo material! Great vocal delivery.” Agreed! MmmDani stans: ”The vocal performance here is so expressive and emotional. I find the whole thing completely hypnotising.”
If you get it, you get it, but if you don’t, this song can feel like a dirge. Despite this song only being 3:14, many of you not attention span having ass people couldn’t wait for it to be over. Salami: ”Felt like this went on for hours.” Wills broke his no commentary rule: ”Wasn't going to rate this below a 4 because commentary but oh my GOD is this fucking dull.” Christopher will get down to this, but that’s it. ”Nothing makes me yawn faster than low electric piano swells. This is like the “sexy modern ballet” number in a burlesque show that has me taking a bathroom break. I’ll get down to this in bed, but…I’m never listening to it otherwise.”
eatyourself, who always surprises me with what he likes and doesn’t like, namedrops another sexy slow jam. ”The influence and impact of Beyoncé - Speechless.” V wishes, but I get it! Untouchable Ace calls it a ”lapdance groove,” and if V was the one giving the lap dance, I’d take it! yeeungelic relates this to ”If a man and a woman had a baby .” Real.
MacSun befuddles: ”oop not me thinking this was RM this is actually good?!” Now bestie, when has RM ever sounded like this? And humblekindness80s lives for the groove: ”my type of slow song, love the jazz vibe"
Highest scorer Glitterizer breaks down in real time and realizes this submission may have been for naught, but YOU WERE RIGHT AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT. “the vocals, the production, the start/stop tempo, the lyrics, the video... i absolutely adore this song, but i fully expect it to be first out. i honestly regret throwing it to the wolves by submitting it, i don't know what i was thinking. i guess i wanted to show a different side of bts and my favorite member but as soon as i saw the hateful takes in the thread i knew i had fucked up. i'm sorry baby, you were too good for these fools. V is your bias? I didn’t realize that! (You probably said it at one point and I tuned it out like when y’all start going on about Epipen in the group chat.) He’s right though. Ballads and songs by BTS are not long for this road, so maybe you should have known better. But I had only listened to this track once or twice before the rate and forgotten about it, so THANK YOU for reintroducing it to me.

Next elimination: A heavy hitter. (But why? I will never know.)
