At least this confirms I picked the right 11 between CROWN and Run Away!

Thank you for the podcast shoutout!

I just watched some of those Stray Kids performances you linked and they really are one of the strongest boy groups in terms of performance... but musically, I have tried SO hard to get it - I've even seen them live - but I just cannot understand how someone could sit and just LISTEN to their songs, with no visual aspect. Their songs (that I've heard) give me stress.

I’ve grown to like and yes, even love some of their music, but I agree that a lot of it is simply not for me. That being said, they usually have excellent choreography and their performances are wildly inventive, cool, and entertaining. Obviously I wish they were linked to songs I enjoyed more, but their performance quality can’t be ignored.

I’m a glutton for punishment.

Jopping is still here which is… surprising. Do people actually support that?
With my dying breath.

For those of you who this rate isn’t going super well for you – sorry ddd. Don’t blame me, I don’t make the news, I just report the news! Finishing up our first tie at #43 is “Fake Love” by BTS. BTS, have you heard of them? They’ve kind of been talked about a lot in this rate so far. In fact, only 3 songs received more votes in their initial ballot submissions than “Fake Love.”

So what happened?! Let’s talk about “Fake-uh Love.” She can be found on Love Yourself: Tear - The 3rd Album, and was released on May 18, 2018. This is another mammoth monster BTS single. Went #1 in Korea and US World, and even made it to #10 in the Billboard Top 100. It’s currently sitting at around 1.2 billion views on YouTube (in their top 5 overall). Casual. Writing credits involve all of the BTS usual suspects: "Hitman" Bang, Pdogg, RM, with Pdogg taking care of production.

Of the “big” BTS singles (they’re all big), this is certainly one of my favorites. I love a bright concept, but there’s something about songs like Boy With Luv, Dynamite, Butter, etc. that are too Western-pandering, or sound like pseudo-pastiche Bruno Mars rip offs (especially the latter two), which is kind of at odds with what I want from BTS. Here, this darker, moodier song fits their vibe a lot better, in my opinion. And while I will never be a fan of their rap line, it feels like a much more natural fit here than on their more upbeat songs.

I’ll also go ahead and say it, I often don’t like their choreography! I can’t say I’m a connoisseur, but I’ve watched more of their dancing than ever before in preparation for this rate, and I simply don’t love their choreo (or the way they execute their choreo) as a group most of the time. Here, though? Love this! Love the ripple at the beginning; love Jungkook’s shameless abs moment, love the slightly contemporary flair in the middle of the more typical K-Pop movements; it all works really well here. The video is also very pretty and absolutely fits the vibe of the song.

Despite a large number of you voting to include this song in the rate, commentary was fairly limited. Slice of Life claims to have given this another chance, but why do I have a feeling that the lie detector test/last.fm scrobbles would determine that that was a lie?! ”This is painful to listen to back then and even more painful now……. I’m sorry, I really tried, you guys.” Christopher documents his feelings in real time: ”Oooh, moody boy guitar. Let’s see where this goes…oh. Attempting to be “hard” while also being sad. Pass.” Why can’t we be hard and sad at the same time?!

KimLippington pinpoints their biggest gripe with the song: ”I love an angsty, tormented boy group moment but that chorus is nails on a chalkboard.” I get it. The chorus has grown on me, but it is a bit screechy over some bad auto-tune over the repeated “fake-uh love” and it can wear over time.

Salami likes the vibe: ”It sounds a bit spooky. This sort of reminds me of early BTS, but with a budget this time.” I’ve never dived into their very early catalog, so the idea of BTS not having a budget is wild to me.

Some of y’all really love this though. Humbleandkindness80s does what I’m sure we all do when a song really hypes us up: ”This one gets me dramatically performing when i listen at home.” And MmmDani goes into full blown stan mode: ”This *feels* big, like a sprawling epic. It’s not over-complicated, it’s not a sugar rush and it doesn’t beat you over the head with how huge it is. It just exists, in its awe-inspiring state. I’ve loved this from the day that I heard it.”

BTS, more than any other group on this rate (and well, at all) has had the opportunity to perform their biggest hits on some of the largest stages around the world. I gleefully love watching any K-Pop performance on a Western show (awards show, morning show, SNL, whatever) because America (in particular) is so fucking bad at filming K-Pop performances. Like, it’s embarrassing. They somehow make these artists look like terrible flops every time despite us knowing that this is simply not the case. Attached below is one of their performances from the Billboard Music Awards, and when you compare it to one of their live Korean stages (or hell, even their dance practice) – the difference is night and day. America needs to take some lessons from South Korea on how to shoot choreography in general.

I guess might as well just get rid of the rest of the BTS songs now so the rate can begin properly.
“The rest” and it’s Mikrokosmos dd.

Listen — do I think some of these songs suffered a fate worse than they deserved? A bit, yes. Do I think that asking to get beat over the head with a shovel and then complaining about being hurt after getting beat over the head with a shovel is a little bit silly? Also yes! For better or worse — you girls knew what you were getting into submitting all these songs ffff.

But some of you still did a few of these songs (mostly Fake Love and Singularity) a bit dirty!

Girl... don't try me, today is NOT the day. Let me be annoyed in peace.

But yes, we should just put a blanket ban on any BTS songs for these stupid rates because again... what's the fucking point? This is not fun for anybody, pro or against them.

Right? I didn‘t submit Onew’s Blue because this forum hates ballads. I also know better than to submit something like Simon Says from NCT 127 as I know how most posters feel about their nosiest work. To think that submitting a BTS song to the rate would get people to change their minds about BTS is just wildly optimistic. Also to the BTS stans- we don’t owe you a change in our distaste for their music, especially when this subforum has been a refuge from them for years.

I mean I just assumed people would be a bit more mature and not just tank all BTS songs because they're BTS songs, even if they're really not particularly worse than what any of the other groups is offering here, but I guess it was too much to ask for. I don't think anyone was trying to get their whole discography in the rate either, or at least I wasn't, I literally only voted for one of their songs and it was my 1 pointer ff
