Another day for me to lose a 10 in this rate. I know I had COVID last week, but it seems like it was the rest of you viewers who are experiencing lost of taste, as this deserved much better than this!

“Savanna” was part of a duel title track release (along with the inferior “time leap”) for OnlyOneOf’s first mini album Dot Point Jump. The two videos were released on May 28, 2019, with the remaining four tracks being released after every 5,555th instance of #OnlyOneOf being used on Twitter. How convoluted and stupid ddd. It’s giving:

Rita-Ora.jpg

OnlyOneOf is a 6 member group (originally 7) formed by 8D Entertainment as the second brainchild of producer and creative director Jaden Jeong. Unlike many of their contemporaries, OnlyOneOf came out of the gate with a very different vibe. Eschewing bright and bubbly, loud and bombastic, or hard and aggressive concepts, they went for fully grown and sexy sound from right out the gate. Songs like “libidO” and “skinz” really cemented their sound and aesthetic as sexy, provocative (and gay), but they’ve always had that side of them, albeit less overt (and gay.)

The numbers are certainly nothing to really gag for in comparison to the other groups in this rate, but despite their sales continuing to increase and their popularity continuing to rise over the years, “Savanna,” which is sitting at 11M views on YouTube, is their second highest view count to date (almost double “libidO.”) I think the Jaden Jeong/LOONA’s brothers connection had a lot to do with the initial interest in them.

Depending on the time of day and what direction the wind is blowing, there are four groups that fight for the title of my favorite K-Pop group: NCT, SEVENTEEN, CIX, and these boys. But if you put a gun to my head, I would say OnlyOneOf is my favorite. Maybe it’s because I root for the underdog. Maybe it’s because I’m a deep homosexual who appreciates that angle of their whole package. But really? It starts and ends with the music. I can listen to their entire discography and not skip a single song. (Except “seOul drift.”) They have an extremely unique sound in K-Pop and they are one of the few groups where I don’t feel like nearly every one of their songs could be performed by any other group. It helps that members Nine, KB (and former member Love, when he was still part of the group) are so involved in the writing and production of their music, even from the first mini. (It’s giving Woozi!) Because of that, their sound is uniquely their own.

I’ve talked about them a lot just as a group in general, and I apologize for gushing for so long, but let’s get into the song itself. I had no delusions that this would make top 10 or 15, but I did expect and hope that it would do a little bit better than this. “Savanna” is smooth and sexy, with a catchy and infectious chorus. It doesn’t necessarily make the biggest statement or impact, so I guess I can understand why it wasn’t showered with 10s, but I did expect (or at least hope) it would gain a few new fans here.

Let’s get to the commentary shall we? eatyourself says “This sounds…soggy.” Takes a soggy bottom to know one! Glitterizer lets me down, but I’ll forgive him because I know he’s a fan now: ”this is kinda faceless, i'm afraid. i really prefer their current gritty sound.” Salami lets me down and continues to let me down: ”An OnlyOneOf song I don't hate instantly! I just don't like it enough to go back to again.” Considering your chaotic and eclectic enjoyment of K-Pop, I would assume you could get down to this! Must be a straight thing.

yeeungelicangel is bopping her head slightly: ”They have better bangers, but it’s a perfectly nice summer song.” Christopher appreciates the vibe: ” Laid back tropic-house pop. I’ll take it.” Slice of Life namedrops one of the two iconic lines from the song: ”Oh the bitch from Savanna song!!!!!! Ok lemme give this a good score xoxo.” Ddd yes, despite what I know you are all hearing, the lyrics are “I don’t give a shake what they think about us” and “Youre like a beach from Savanna.” Sure, Jan. And finally, MmmDani finds himself a budding fan: “Incredibly slick, I’m starting to really like this group. If you need anyone to help convince you I AM YOUR MAN. Xx

- All of them deserve to lose songs so I don't really care who is it, probably GOT7 and NCT though

- Hopefully Jonghyun, sorry but that song is easily one of the worst here

- It better be BTS... (and most likely is)

- I'm guessing either NU'EST or DAY6 and would be happy with either

First Nicki. Then Halsey. Now Soyeon. Today, we say goodbye to the last female feature on in the rate, the early era Key-bop “I Wanna Be.” “I Wanna Be” served as the repackaged title track for Key’s first full length album. It was released on Mar 3, 2019 and went to a modest #122 in Korea. This song wasn’t heavily promoted at the time, as it actually was released on the day that Key began his mandatory military enlistment.

“I Wanna Be” is a warm, nostalgic dance track expressing undying love for another person. The verses are kind of calm and soothing, with an electronic dance chorus. The melody doesn’t not remind me of “Angel of Mine” by Monica, which has always added to it’s appeal to me. Sing the first few lines of that song “When I first saw you, I already knew, there was something, inside of you” and now sing the chorus of this. The mind of a mastermind.

I became obsessed with this song and album a few years ago. At the time, I had no idea who Soyeon was or that she was a member of (G)I-DLE. Her voice is certainly…distinct, and definitely is a love it or hate it type of delivery. (For me, it’s both, depending on the song). Here, it’s fairly unobtrusive, despite still being singularly her.

The video is equal parts pretty and goofy. Soyeon looks so hot, and the colors are really exciting, but Key’s fashion, which is usually such a serve, is questionable here. I don’t love it, I can’t lie. I’m also not a huge fan of the choreography, which at times feels flaily and too hype for the mellowness of the beginning of the song.

Let’s get to the comments! eatyourself calls it “Spotify pop” and also gave it a terrible score so we know he doesn’t mean that positively. MmmDani comes for the production. ”This is fun, but it’s not got consistently solid production for me. The second verse is a little clunky too.” I don’t really hear the inconsistencies in production, personally.

A lot of you commented on Soyeon’s inclusion. Salami stans, as a surprise to no one: ”The rap is going to get a lot of hate but I love it. The whole thing is very 2019 but in a good way.” yeeungelic does not find Soyeon’s boob or booty hot: ”Love key but wtf… I think the feature ruined it for me.” Joli Chat was lowkey shocked when her name appeared: ”looking like that New York image when she says “Beyonce!?” but with Soyeon.”

This early-era Key music definitely had it’s own flavor, but I feel like “Bad Love” was when Key was really able to take over creative control of his sound and release music that was super indicative of “him.” I.E. very homosexual. And he’s been kind of serving that over his last several releases. Glitterizer clocked that difference: ”these debut album songs very much give ""Key before SM allowed him to be Lady Gaga"". bit boring!” While I love both this and “One Of These Nights,” I definitely get this feedback. With that being said, I recommend checking out the album! Songs like “Good Good,” “Honest,” “Imagine,” and “Chemicals,” while not quite as runway ready as songs like “CoolAs,” definitely give the type of pussy from Key that you’ve come to love and expect. In fact, lemme go listen to this whole album again because it’s really quite great!

Humbleandkindness80s enjoys the build: ”I like that they increase the melodies and adlibs near the end.” 100%! A third chorus should NOT sound like a first chorus, and the new harmonies and ad-libs really add to the song. UntouchableAce shades my favorite hot cartoon: ”I know you predicted the mullet trend, but please stop giving Captain Planet.”

Finally, Christopher was expecting greatness, and wasn’t let down: ”What does it say that I saw this track coming up in the playlist and thought, “Thank god, Key won’t let me down.” And he didn’t…though this is still a pretty even-keeled track, it’s more than pleasant and has a great melody.”

I’m pretty sure Key was pretty involved in his first album and it’s the type of music he wanted to make at the time. I say this because he is one of maybe two SM soloists who got to debut with a full album. Everybody else in SHINee debuted with a mini, so I always found it interesting how Key convinced them to give him a full album.

That said, this is my least favourite Key title track so I’m not mad at it going first. Soyeon doesn’t bother me, I just think it’s lacking a bit of oomph.

I don’t know if this is a shocking elimination or not, but today we say goodbye to our 1st TXT song, the opening track of their debut mini “Blue Orangeade.” “Blue Orangeade” appeared on The Dream Chapter: Star and was released on March 4, 2019.

“Blue Orangeade” was produced and written by Slow Rabbit, and co-written by Moonshine, Cazzi Opeia, Ellen Berg, Supreme Boi. The idea behind the song is basically an opposites attract story, with the colors blue and orange being the symbols (of colors that are opposites but complementary to each other.) About a month later on April 9th, a cute and colorful lyric video was released for the song, and they did perform this one live at their debut celebration show.

TXT really have gone on a journey with their sound, huh? I feel like some groups struggle with finding their sound until a few releases in until they finally cement what makes them them. There’s no denying that “Loser Lover” and “Lovesong” were a huge sonic change for TXT and kind of informed a lot of their future releases, but I would argue that they had a pretty well established sound right from the getgo, so it’s been fun to hear that evolution over time.

In the beginning, TXT was frothy, bubbly, bouncy and infectious. Always giving immaculate melodies and endlessly singable tunes. Even when they would hit us with something a little harder, (like 9 and 3 quarters) there was always such a glittery sheen to everything (and I’m not just talking about that Hybe autotune.)

I love the direction they’ve gone in as of late, but I do think that them swinging big as of late has also meant that the misses have been as big as the hits. In the early days, all of their songs were just consistently enjoyable. The definition of a “no skip discography” for a while, I fear!

“Blue Orangeade” is not their best song ever, and I do think the TXT stans were working overtime getting 4 songs (3 from their debut mini alone) into this rate. If I were to leave one off, it would have been this one (and replaced with “Cat & Dog” oop), so I’m not mad that this one was the first to go.

There’s plenty to like about this. The new jack swing influence is a nice throwback nod. The production skitters along in a really cool way, and the chorus is super catchy. Unfortunately, the background vocals think they are giving New Edition or Boys II Men but they’re actually giving and that’s what you missed on Glee.

Not a TON of commentary on this one, but let’s see what the girls had to say. yeeungelicangel voted for this song, and then bombed it. Explain yourself! ”I promise txt is one of my ults just not a fan of their first album.” Salami is a current fan, but doesn’t care for the older hits: ”I'm sure this is a really popular song but it's the sound I don't like from boy groups, especially ones I really like. I don't think I liked TXT until they went a bit rockier and this is why.” What do you mean by “this sound,” bestie.

Only deep and meaningful lyrics get to Glitterizer: ”when yeonjun said YOU LIKE TUPAC I LIKE BIGGIE BIGGIE, NEON KANGAJI NAN KITTY KITTY i really felt that.” I had to look up the lyrics to see if those were real or if they were one of those “this is what people hear” type situations. Gagged to realize it was true. It’s giving Miley having never listened to a Jay-Z song in “Party in the USA” but I’ll choose to believe Yeonjun had the taste to know who either of those legends are.

MmmDani enjoys: ”So much youthful energy, it’s a very uplifting listen. It reminds me of summer.” I’d agree! It’s definitely a feel good, positive experience. MacSun finally gets what he’s looking for: ”Now this is what I’m talking about!” Finally, Christopher seems to enjoy most what kind of drags the song down for me: ”Another M&M™ (milquetoast mid-tempo), but this one’s a little more pleasant. And, I’m a sucker for GLEE/choir harmonies…”

It’s been nice to see TXT be able to become grown and sexy in the later years, but they really ate this cutesy concept, which you can see from the live stage below.
