KPB Classique ⚣ 2018-2019 Edition ~ FINALE

Sorry besties, I won't have time to do an elimination today. Work is kicking my ass. I promise to comeback with an equally disappointing reputation, but with two eliminations tomorrow. (Probably.)

Sorry besties, work was such hell yesterday that I felt like I got hit with a ton of bricks all day and could barely stay awake. So, while we don't get 2 elims -- here's one at least! And to apologize ....

Today we say goodbye to “Bet Bet,” the lone entry from our gone but not forgotten oppas, NU’EST. “Bet Bet” was the title track from Happily Ever After, the boys 6th mini album. The song was written by members Baekho and JR, along with Woozi’s live-in producer husband Bumzu, and produced by Royal Dive. The song was a decent sized hit for the boys, going to #14 in Korea.

“Bet Bet” was released in April 2019, over 2.5 years after their previous mini in late 2016. In early 2017, lead vocalist Minhyun participated in the second season of Produce 101, placed 9th, and ended up debuting in the group Wanna One, along with notable members Kang Daniel, Daehwi and Woojin from AB6IX, and my two ultimate baes, Bae Jin Young from CIX and Ha Sung Woon. (Justice for “Sneakers” in the 2021 Boys Rate, you beasts!)

NU’EST is a group that I know barely. I generally enjoy what I hear, and despite frequent thirsting over Baekho, I’ve never really dived fullly into them. IDK. Something hasn’t totally clicked with me for them yet. And well, since they disbanded, I doubt it ever well. But I’m never going to be mad when a NU’EST song pops up in my world, for whatever reason.

I gave “Bet Bet” a 7. I like it I do. And I’m not quite sure why I don’t like it more. There’s a lot about it that works. I’m a sucker for good vocals, which we get in abundance. I’m a sucker for sexy, moody bangers like this. I’m a sucker for the concept. Apparently, “Bet Bet” is what is described as the final chapter of the “Three-part Knight Series,” which started with one of their 2016 releases. I love the knight/royalty/wicked magic type vibes in the video (Think WayV’s “Phantom” or GFRIEND’s “Apple”).

There’s nothing that I actively dislike about the song, but I guess the melodies and production simply don’t grab me that ferociously to stan beyond going “I like this!”

Salami decides to drag our himbo king Baekho. ”I hadn't heard this before and I don't know any of their names so the blonde guy from the MV who sings the chorus - his voice is kind of annoying.” Repent for your wicked ways! Meanwhile, Joli Chat remembers what’s important about the blonde: ”I thought “giving it a high score cause baekho is hot is unfair” but then again visuals are important in kpop, so whatever I’m doing is valid for real.” Glitterizer, who won’t see these posts anymore (come back bestie!), opts against thirsting for one second to understand talent: ”baekho vocals are so iconic, like, that's father…” I have been known to call him daddy!

Christopher continues to baffle me a bitsy with the way he describes songs: ”Admittedly, ballads are a tough sell for me…and “bump ’n grind ballads” usually even tougher. I was hoping this change into something that would prove an exception, but alas…it remained exactly what I thought it was from the jump. Not my cup of tea. (Random observation: the repeated whistle riff is very close to interpolating “Whistle” by Flo Rida…)" Between describing half the playlist as mid-tempos and then this – bestie I promise any song with a BPM slower than poppers o’clock is not considered a ballad, but live your truth!

leedlelee… remembers the real enemy: PLEDIS. ”Fuck PLEDIS…I miss these guys so much…” They can rot! MmmDani also recognizes the slay of Baekho’s chorus: ”Beautiful chorus. I really like the second verse.” Slice of Life gives backhanded compliment: ”I MISS U OPPAS OMFG PLS RETURN TO ME BECAUSE YOUR SOLO RELEASES ARE MOSTLY SHIT!!!” Now bestie, how can you say that when “Elevator” and “Hidden Side” just came out last year?!

And finally, I’m so sorry chrisjche for losing your 11! ”Everything I want in a boyband song and video. I miss them so much!”

Aw, sad to see it go so early but I'm glad it was in the rate at all, honestly! I'm surprised NU'EST doesn't get more flowers in general from the international K-Pop fans. Their overall sound (in the later years) felt like a progression of some 2000s/2010s pop that a lot of the forum members here love.

I love this rate! It's been fun to see the divide between those that prefer the more performance-based, sometimes referred to as 'noisy', powerful groups like Stray Kids and ATEEZ and those that prefer the more RnB-esque, melodic groups like SHINee and EXO. Then there's the super cute and bubbly boygroup stuff that I think is quite naturally divisive since there's such a cultural difference there with what people want their ~ideal men~ to be like.

Cranking out another elimination this morning so I can hopefully have time to do another this evening!

It's the end of an era.

She put up a valiant fight, but in the end, I think it was fairly obvious how this was going to go down. Yes, today we say goodbye to our last song from BTS: “Mikrokosmos.” “Mikrokosmos” was a B-Side from their 6th mini album Map of the Soul: Persona, and, because it’s BTS, still went to #8 in Korea and #3 on the US World Charts. This album was released on April 12, 2019. (Funny enough, the last 4 eliminations were all released within a month of each other.)

I am nothing if not a loyal friend. And I would have to scroll back quite a bit in our DMs, but I remember a good while back (like – well over a year ago), I reached out to bestie Glitterizer and basically said, “Okay, you know what kind of music I like – send me a playlist of BTS songs that you think could convert me.” And he made a valiant effort! And while I did not convert, it was the start of thawing my icy heart against them. Now I don’t hate them like I used to. I just hate their fans!

A big reason for that change was this song. It’s not my favorite song of all time by any means, but it was the first BTS song that I had ever heard that didn’t sound like – all the things about them that I hate. The vocals are pretty. (V EATS that second pre-chorus, sorry haters!) I can usually get into this kind of emotional pop. The rapline was understated. The melodies were melody-ing. That ethereal production in the intro really hooked me.

Mikrokosmos is basically their play on the world microcosm and cosmos, essentially saying that everyone carries an entire universe of light and stars inside themselves. I didn’t do enough research to say this with certainty, but this very much feels like a “for the fans” song, describing how the group feels about their fandom. It’s also giving “last song in the concert, put your lighters up,” - which is sometimes hit or miss for me. Here, it’s a hit.

I think the biggest clue that this song is actually pretty decent is, despite it being on this forum, it has a cute little 7.75 average and this is the first song in the rate to receive no lower score than a 5! Growth. Many of you loved this, and at worst, you were whelmed. Not bad for the most maligned boy group in history on PopJustice!

eatyourself, who has been fairly kind to BTS this rate, was whelmed. ”It's cute but should go harder.” Lower scorer Joli Chat finds this a bit beige: ”dime a dozen, not bad but it ain’t got much going on tbh.” I agree that this is the type of song where, if you are a fan of the group, it could hit really hard, but if you have no emotional attachment to them, it can kind of be a “just there” type of song. Still, repent!

Notorious hater (of BTS, not just, in general, though sometimes, in general fff) RUNAWAY is surprised: ”why can’t more of their music sound like this???” It probably physically pained him to give that 7.5 out, but here we are! Christopher breaks out his music nerd commentary: ”Ooooh I love a non-standard meter…go off, 6:8 time signature!!! A gorgeous melody WITH a proper chorus, what’s not to like? BTS earns their keep with this one. (Still…could have earned another half point if they’d added another drum or bass line post-the 3:16 mark)” Any pop song that brings out the 6/8 should at least be given a 2nd listen!

yeeungelicangel, who was asked to provide an amended ballot, boosted a handful of songs, this one being one of them. “Judged this too harshly on first listen, it’s a nice song.” She still gave it a 5, fff. Untouchable Ace enjoys the throwback nature of the song: ”Mikro-1980's.”

Salami loves the group chant ending: ”The last 40 seconds is so nice. The rest of it is good obviously but what a mood lifter that is.” MmmDani dares to put himself in the middle of a bunch of ARMYs by CHOICE. ”It’s an ethereal masterpiece. That final minute is gold. I wish I’d heard this in a stadium concert.” I definitely agree this would pop off live.

Finally, Glitterizer stans as he properly should: ”yeah it was probably genetically engineered to be the perfect "put your lights up!" end-of-concert song but... it works as intended! swedish composers you will always be famous (just don't ask me to name any).” Well, since you won’t see this post anyway, I won’t ask! She/her

I dearly want this to be GOT7, so it seems unlikely to be the case. So that means NCT is probably going, maybe Touch because it’s cute or Superhuman because it’s slightly noisy? I don’t think Love Talk’s lyrics will be enough of an issue for voters.

Outside chance it’s SHINee, but I kinda feel like that’s only happening if the contingent of voters who think smooth pop and r&b is “boring” overpowered those of us who like that style. I’m not convinced that will happen, but if it does then it better be Countless and not literal masterpiece Good Evening.

I don’t usually like to speculate for this rate, but if it helps move the page for @boom bazooka joe then it was for a worthy cause.

I’m surprised to see my BTS average, I thought giving a 5.5 to Idol would’ve dragged it down. But I guess it makes sense, I submitted most of them and they cover such a wide variety of genres. All (mostly) uniquely interesting (amongst the other songs in the rate).

Admittedly, when I first heard Boy With Luv, the thing that stopped me diving in head-first was the presence of rap. I thought that it broke the flow of an otherwise brilliant vocal song. Re-visiting them later (and k-pop in general) I quickly got over my rap-phobia, and I think that it’s presence in many k-pop tracks is a huge part of what makes them interesting. I appreciate BTS’ rap-line for how distinct each of them are and how interesting their flows can usually be.

But I’m aware that rap is a huge initial obstacle for people getting into k-pop, so it’ll always be the most scrutinised part (from what I see anyway). This particular rap line does it for me (obviously).

Even though Idol is shit, it’s sad to see the other bops die alongside it.

Now, let’s get rid of some of these:
Tempo - EXO
Nanana - IMFACT
Obsession - EXO
Movie Star - CIX
How the is Nanana still here anyway? (it is right?)
