And lastly, we say goodbye to “Nanana” by IMFACT. SORRY EATYOURSELF! <3
“Nanana” was released on August 16, 2018 as their 5th digital single. It was written by 1105 and Opro. I couldn’t really find any info on 1105, but Opro also produced “After Like” by IVE (I won’t hold it against them), so that’s a bit of a slay!
IMFACT was a 5 member group that debuted in 2016 and released music through 2020. At that time, some of the members began their mandatory military service, and others released some solo material. In 2022, it was announced that none of the boys renewed their contract with Str Empire, and while they didn’t officially announce a “disbandment” … well, the writing is very much on the wall if you ask me.
While the song didn’t chart significantly, it did prove to be a moderate success for the guys. In fact, Dazed magazine ranked it at number 13 in its list of the 20 best K-pop songs of 2018. Slay a bitsy!
I gave this song a 7. It was fine to good on initial listens. There have been many times since we started the eliminations that I wanted to change my score to this. It has continued to grow on me in a very significant way. Not quite a 10, but a 9 at least! But when I submitted my scores at the end of the voting period, I told myself to hold strong, hence why she is here at #26 Part 4.
I really appreciate a lot about this song, from the dreamy, atmospheric production, to that gorgeous build into the chorus. The production here is definitely a product of it’s time, which some of you liked more than others. I just typed out that sentence and then saw yeeungelic’s comment ddd, which is ”Think its a product of its time and the sound aged poorly.” I disagree about it aging poorly, however!
MmmDani takes issue with a supposed lazy chorus: ”The “nanana” melody is so unnecessary, it’s a really distracting sore-thumb in an otherwise great track. There’s no good reason for it not to be actual words, I’m sick of this trope.” Normally, I would agree. I generally don’t love choruses that are just na’s or la’s or some arbitrary syllable in place of actual lyricism, but here it doesn’t bother me because there are actual lyrics in between the na na na’s so at least the chorus still has something to say.
Joli Chat bops but probably skips to the next track before it’s done: ”no, no no, no no no” I agree!’ That would be my comment here if the song was bad, luckily it isn’t! THAT SAID, by the third chorus it does get annoying.”
Christopher appreciates where the song goes, even if he thinks it takes too long to get there: ”A slow burn for sure…I think starting out so bland really helped elevate a chorus that might not have stood out much, otherwise.” See, I love a build, so the first minute of this song is easily the most exciting for me.
Glitterizer, almost 11 giver, loves: ”honestly considered giving this my 11... almost too euphoric for words. dance pop perfection.” I imagine a remix of this going off in the club (even though I generally hate remixes.) But this is the type of song where you’re making out with someone through the emotional bits before a sweat filled dance-athon. MacSun channels Katy Perry: ”WIG!!!! And 11 giver eatyourself simply says: ”Nostalgia made correctly.”
