#KS☊TY2020: The K-Pop Song of the Year 2020 Rate

he/him
Again, some of Klein and Taft songs:
Girls' Generation - "Lips"

Taemin - "Ace" (not main composers).

Red Velvet - "Automatic"

"Cool Hot Sweet Love",
"Look",
"Perfect 10",
"Time Slip",
IRENE & SEULGI - "Diamond" (Klein and Öberg only)
Kim Lip (LOOΠΔ) - "Eclipse",

Choerry & JinSoul - "Puzzle"
S.E.S. - "Hush" (probably main composers in team were Teddy Riley, Lee Hyun-seung and DOM, but I hear something. Also, it is interesting, that after "Automatic", related to "Be Natural" (which is originally by S.E.S.), Klein and Taft worked on S.E.S. song)

EXO - "Boomerang" (Klein only)
SuperM – "Step Up"
some songs, which Charli Taft performs herself:
Charli Taft - "Love Like You" (for SM Station)

and Charli Taft - "Up Next"

Love the Taft/Klein stanning, they’re massively underrated! Some of my favourite songs of all time tbh.

Coming for YUKIKA of all people, when she saved both our lives and the KPop industry with her amazing merging of resurging citybop genre from her native Japan to once again remind everyone that music is transcendental. Whew, I don't know a better person.

And speaking of "What Do I Call You", it only grows on me. So much so, that I think it might vie for my favorite Taeyeon track? Oh wow.

I'm back from the pond reply days and ready to eliminate another 11. I'm sorry because today, we are saying goodbye to ITZY's That's A No No, my good sis @thommyh's 11. But wow, what a run. I guess y'all can tolerate loud music sometimes kekeke.

That's A No No is taken from ITZY's second mini album, IT'z ME. It was written and composed by Shim Eunji and KASS with additional production from Ariowa Irosogie. 2020 was a banner year for ITZY when it comes to album tracks. Aside from That's A No No, they also released Ting Ting Ting, I Don't Wanna Dance, Don't Give A What, Surf... these girls said we are album artists too and they are absolutely correct. But for this rate, only That's A No No made the cut and yes, it is well-deserved. It's my joint fave ITZY album track with Ting Ting Ting. Sure, this is loud music for the masses but it's a huge bop and for that, I can only be thankful.

@Salami mentions this in his comment but That's A No No is like carnival or fiesta music to these ears. The Philippines has, like, hundreds of fiestas (or festivals for our English-speaking colonizers xoxo) and That's A No No is literally the type of song I would hear during these fun times. This is the song used for motorcades, street dancing... this is a sound that's literally everywhere. And hearing it always brings me back to my badgalslicey days aka the days when you'd find me doing the absolute most during fiestas fffffff. But that's all in the past now; the last fiesta I participated in was in 2015... wow, I really matured, fuck.

Anyway, yes, That's A No No is an absolute monster of a bop and it gets me pumped every single time. If you're only here for fairy angelic music then you came to the wrong place. That's A No No is for the dirty girls of KPJ only. The production is sticky and heavy, some of the vocals are heavily processed, the girls are giving us their best iljin moments. It's... a lot. And I understand why some boring and maybe older people can't vibe with this. It's really overwhelming at times but that's exactly its charm. It makes you feel like you're drowning but, like, in the best way possible? I don't know if that makes sense but that's just how it makes me feel ffffff.

ITZY are one of the rare artists who found their signature sound super early in their careers. And it's more amazing because I am absolutely not yet bored with their sound which I didn't expect at all. Even though some groups have aped ITZY's sound to varying degrees of success, I also enjoy those "homages" too. That's the ultimate testament to the excellence of The ITZY Print™. It just makes me want it more. If they give me That's A No No 2.0 on their new album, I'm still honestly gonna drop it down low to that shit like it's the first time. Give it to me fast!

The K-Pop subforum's grandma, Memoria, is clearly not the target market of ITZY fffff: "I'm losing the will to live." ry123 calls this: "weird sound space." Girl, wtf does that mean? Joli Chat is not feeling it as well: "It’s A No No for me! The prechorus is nice tho!" Empty Shoebox betrays Lia yet again: "I think the problem I have with this is that it shares an album with some much better songs." And eccentricsimply is rebelling against That's A No No's inclusion: "That out of all the ITZY's b-sides this was the one that reached top 5 is...... Okay. It's not one of my faves for sure!" Chaeryeong is not happy with this opinion omfg.

And speaking of ITZY's other b-sides, a lot of y'all mentioned the bop that is Ting Ting Ting. Yeziirl hates on That's A No No: "i would have given ting ting a good score, but this… song title checks out." Vixen also promos another ITZY b-side: ""Ting Ting Ting" and "I Don't Wanna Dance" absolutely outserved this and should have made onto the rate instead of this, but it's not a bad b-side." yuuurei has her preferences: "This mini had such good B-sides. I personally would slightly rather have seen 'TING TING TING' here, but I do love this one as well." clowezra agrees and adds: "Bop! Definitely holding up since it came out, Ting Ting Ting deserved to be here instead though." evilsin is just happy for more ITZY representation: "I'm a little surprised this is in the rate over other album tracks of theirs, but at least it's more ITZY!" Well, maybe one of y'all should've Superbyeol'd Ting Ting Ting instead of, you know, crying about it fffff. YES, SUFFER, UNNIES!

ohnostalgia, who gave this an 8.5, proudly says: "There, I managed to not give every ITZY song a 10." Deserved a 10 from you though. Crisp X praises Satan: "This is demonic shit, I love it." Not on Easter Sunday, bestie ffffff. aux keeps it simple: "A great b-side." Rainbow Trousers loves a balanced kind of fun: "Fun but not too fun." Luck once again showcases their ITZY fanaticism: "Rating this song lower than 10? That's A No No. It's literal perfection I can't make it not bop." As you should! And Salami calls this: "One of the best B sides of the year for sure. It’s like carnival party rave mental asylum music. Love it." Not mental asylum music fffffff. YOU NEED TO STOP!

It's time to say goodbye to your 11 now, thommyh. Come on, speak into the mic:
"Can't let you kill myyyy vibe. (RRRA! TA! TA! TA!) That's a no no! Sorry I beg your pardohNNN. shideulgi baraettamyehONN malhaesseul tende, I told yaaa {WOAH-OH!OH!OH!}... That's a no no!

Like... this pre-chorus & chorus is literally so fucking good??? It appeals to all my unhinged brat-pop crackhead-craving synapses and I would be a fucking evil liar if I said this wasn't one of my most played songs of 2020 - literally like in my top 5 since its release ddd. It's like, the mainstream-friendly more palatable version of ARISONG."

The next eliminated song got 17 10s.

And yet, that wasn't enough to put it in the top 50.

Poor it.

We finally say goodbye to our first Oh My Girl song tonight. This is Nonstop, the girls' biggest hit on Korea yet. Nonstop is the lead single of Oh My Girl's seventh mini album of the same name. It was written by Seo Ji-eum and member Mimi and composed by Steven Lee, Andreas Johansson, Laurell Barker and Sebastian Thott (scream!).

After Oh My Girl's pretty successful stint on Queendom (they finished second to, um, Mamamoo), the girls waited six months before they released their new single/album. I thought this was a dumb decision at first because, umm, why waste the girls' momentum and wait six fucking months for them to come back? It just didn't make sense to me. I guess I underestimated Oh My Girl's newfound success because right upon release, Korea was obsessed with Nonstop. Yes, obsessed... so much that I'm pretty sure it's still charting in the MelOn top 100 right at this very moment ffffff. It peaked at number 2 on the Gaon Digital Chart and went on to become Korea's 13th best selling song of the year. It was the second biggest selling girl group song of the year, only behind Red Velvet's own monster hit, Psycho. Yes, it was bigger than any single by BLACKPINK, Twice and yes, Mamamoo. Yes, paybacks, pay-fucking-backs, xoxo. I couldn't be any happier for my girls. After years of hustling, I'm so glad to see Korea finally give Oh My Girl their due. It was about time.

With that said, it was a bit surprising for me that it was Nonstop that truly made Korea take notice of Oh My Girl. Even as a stan, I can say with absolute confidence that Nonstop is far from their best song. I mean, in my biased eyes, Nonstop is a fucking banger that deserved all of the accolades it got. But without my rose-colored glasses, I know in my heart that Nonstop is one of Oh My Girl's weaker singles. Which is the very reason why I couldn't award it more points. There's really nothing wrong with the song for me. It's, well, a basic bop that's probably a little too dated for my liking. But it still sounds like the usual Oh My Girl single to me which automatically makes it a good song. The solid vocals, the ~swag~ Mimi rap, the easy, breezy production. It's all in Nonstop.

I guess it just doesn't hit as hard as, say, Secret Garden, Remember Me, The Fifth Season, or Closer. And there's nothing wrong with that per se. Not all singles can and should be as life-affirming as Closer, for example. And Nonstop, in all its basicness, bops hard so I'll continue using it for the foreseeable future. I just hope that their new single, to be released this May, will be better than Nonstop. I need to be reminded of what truly Oh My Girl is capable of. And I need Korea to stan and worship a true 11/10 Oh My Girl single.

The Aretha Franklin impact just won't let up as Crisp X fake-quotes the legend: "Great prechorus, beautiful prechorus." Glitterizer is feeling... nothing, nothing at all: "This isn't awful but it does absolutely nothing for me. It sounds like what I thought every girl group song sounded like before I got into K-Pop." The last sentence fffff... I'm glad Nonstop wasn't the first K-Pop girl group song you heard. clowezra rebukes the hetty vibe: "This is...a bit of a hetty nightmare. Sounds like something that would play on Love Island? It sounds expensive at least. I was pretty happy for this one to end." roblognick also wanted the song to end fast: "I'm not sure I like the "non-stop" being so … non-stop."

"Remember when I thought this would be the worst song in here… nvm," Kuhleezi reminisces. "That drop is still kind of electric chair. When they bring it back in the end thinking they did something, that ain't that chief." Our girls tested our stanhood, bestie. Joli Chat drags the Korean GP's taste... or lack thereof: "Who said Tropical house is dead? Not the Korean GP, that’s for sure!" askew is reduced to three words: "Not very good." And OspreyQueen is feeling spiteful: "Technically this is around a 5, but they’ve removed SSFWL from streaming services and I’m full of spite today." It's back now, thank fuck.

Speaking of SSFWL or The Fifth Season, Empty Shoebox has this to say: "This is standard 'off the shelf' k-pop isn't it? Why would anyone choose this as the followup to the wonderful Fifth Season album?" This thought keeps me up at night ffff. Memoria calls this: "A letdown after the hype that Queendom brought them. Still, I'm happy it was successful for them." Same. And I can just feel Wills' frustration with that long-ass first word ffffff: "Whyyyyyyyyyyyy was no effort put into making this anything more than a stock trop loop? There’s no substance to the composition here, only the death rattle of a million B-sides from the past half decade."

This was a grower for aux: "I kinda hated this on release, but the more I listen to OH NO GIRL, the more I like the song, so." Not OH NO GIRL, binch. Oh My Girl needs to thank Ana Raquel's friend for the nonstop promo kii: "This was possibly my biggest grower. I wasn't super into it when it was released (Neon was my fave in the mini), but a friend loved this song and spammed it nonstop (pun intended) on plug. Now I got hypnotized by it." evilsin defends the use of tropical house in the year of our Lorde 2020: "Did people dislike this because this dared to be tropi-house-y in 2020? Anyway saljjak seollesseo nan when I heard this." eatyourself agrees and even namechecks the kween of Zippyshare: "Is tropical concept overdone? Yes. Does this track bop like there's no tomorrow? Also yes. I can see Charli XCX all over it."

"I have... reluctantly come to appreciate this song for what it is," eccentricsimply admits and you know what? I respect that. savilizabeths promos Dolphin while semi-stanning Nonstop: "I’m so happy that this era gave them the success they deserve even if the song isn’t as good as their best. I can’t deny that I love it though. The chorus is simple but fun and memorable. I love the bubbly vibes but Dolphin is definitely the superior song for me." ohnostalgia is calling on the gayming community: "Was this written for a video game? It should be in one!" Yeziirl is too busy bopping to Nonstop to even care: "i have no idea why this song works, but it just works and everyone seems to like it. it’s just so summery and lovely." And Luck almost gave this their 11: "This was REALLY close to being my 11 it's just so good...I’m obsessed with the chorus (as simple as it is) but the whole song is pop perfection."

I just have to give the ending fairy slot to Salami who is probably the biggest Oh My Girl stan I know. Take it away, papi!: "Interested to see where this ends up! So glad it did well for them, finally a decent hit which they really deserve (although I’m still not sure why it was this song that did it). The only downside to them finally getting success is they barely put anything else out. But when your only song released does so well, you don’t need to. Literally no one else has done that in 2020 so anyone who doesn’t like them or this song - they don’t give a shit, Oh My Flop no more. And the song itself is so catchy - still sounds like them but a less niche version. I don’t mean sellout, or trend chasing or whatever everyone else will say - sometimes all you need is a great pop song and that’s what this is." Oh My Girl were never flops omfg. We need to stop that narrative!!!
