#KS☊TY2020: The K-Pop Song of the Year 2020 Rate

I don't want to jinx it, but considering how oft it's been called out, all I am hoping for is that Criminal escapes 21st place and manages a Top 20 placement. Praying to the Gay Gods.

As far as Untouchable goes -- it did a hell of a good job. I should have scored it higher. Glad my 7 didn't hurt it too badly.

And just missing the top 20 is the Superbyeol Song pick of @aux, Universe by LOONA. Universe is taken from LOONA's third mini album, [12:00]. It was written by Jo Yoon-kyung and composed by Daniel Durn, Katrine Neya Klith Joergensen and Peter Wallevik.

I still vividly remember the day I first listened to Universe. When it was revealed that the whole [12:00] l34ked, I ran straight to Instagram and DM'd my dear @aux ffffffffff. Mess, I know but I really needed to listen to the album, okay? I loved the whole album and made me believe in LOONA again after they disappointed me with the [X X] album. One track in particular stood out from the crowd. It was like I was transported back to the fabled pre-debut LOONA era. And somehow listening to it made me emotional ffffff. Of course, it was Universe.

This track is literally the one song I was waiting for LOONA to release post-debut. Don't get me wrong; I love most of LOONA's post-debut discography too. But I was really waiting for that one song that I can say is on the same league of excellence as Sweet Crazy Love, Eclipse, Love Letter, Egoist, you know, the pre-debut classiques. And just when I was slowly losing interest in LOONA, they finally ended my sufferings and released Universe... which immediately made me re-sign my contract as an Orbit. It was just that good.

Universe is such a perfect song title because the song really sounds spacey and angelic and all those good things. It's like listening to @God, honestly. The girls' crystal clear vocals work so well with the delicate production. This is also quite possibly my favourite vocal performance by LOONA post-debut too. Sure, maybe there aren't huge high notes here but a vocal performance doesn't really need the craziest vocal gymnastics for it to be great. The emotions behind their vocals, the well-placed ad libs, these are better than unnecessary high notes imo. And I'm glad LOONA showcased that perfectly on Universe.

A LOONA comeback is almost upon us. And while I know most of us praying for a Voice/Star-like single, let us also pray that we get a few Universes on the album. I know it's what we deserve for putting up with BlockBerry Creative's shenanigans.

Universe received exactly one (1) negative comment and surprise, surprise, it's from Empty Shoebox: "@Vixen told me to treat them like they were still nugus. I compared this song to a random nugu song. That song was 'I Don't Miss U' by woo!ah!. This song is not as good." Maybe the other Nadirs can also explain why they hate a song this good? Thanks, besties.

Even noted 2020 LOONA anti, ohnostalgia, can't help but marvel at Universe's excellence: "Universe definitely grew on me. Maybe I do enjoy some 2020 LOONA content after all." Universe is so good that it even touched yuuurei's nonexistent heart: "So gorgeous. Delicate, yet powerful. It stirs inspiration even in my cold, dead heart." Talent! evilsin gives the whole [12:00] album some very deserved praise: "So gentle and smooth. I actually noticed this with most of the tracks of "[12:00]". It just all works so amazingly here with the soft delivery and serene lines that flow into one another." Crisp X can only mutter: "Breathtaking."

Universe has some protective powers according to clowezra: "Hands down one of the best and most euphoric choruses they’ve ever put out, I can’t even begin to process how much I adore this song. Tapping back into their spacey, ethereal pop sound is the vaccine." Pfizer is quaking. Memoria shades LOONA's two divisive 2020 singles: "I want to live in a Universe where So What and Why Not never happened." And Love Deluxe shades... Jaden Jeong kekeke: "Jinsoul demolished the mere crumbs that the producers gave her, we love a main vocalist. Shoutout to @vague unnie pointing out Heejin’s shaky vibrato in the bridge and I have been unable to unhear it ever since! Also love love LOVE that Universe and Voice alone prove that LOONA truly don’t need musty ass Jaden to capture the essence of their “old” sound that so many Orbits desire." This tea is so good helpppp.

Everybody say thank you to aux for Superbyeoling Universe!: "My favourite b-side of the year. This is everything I love about LOONA diluted into one song. I am a sucker for any type of pop song that slowly drapes itself over you, softly building its intricate production which then blossoms into an otherworldly finale. “Universe” is an incredibly comforting mid-tempo which is a softer sister to another one of their best songs “Butterfly”. This is an ethereal banger through and through."

And finally, here's vague who chose Universe as his 11. An excellent choice, my bestie!: "JinSoul's adlib at 2:17.... i_can_hear_god dot jif. I'm willing to do just about anything for a live stage of this at some point. there was no other choice for my 11 of the rate tbh. this is just a perfect song to me. the melody and vocals and production... it's all perfection!"

So proud of this legitimate work of art, maybe you do all have taste after all x

she/her
Dream of You can just stay as long as the astoundingly superior Stay To Igor outlasts it.

Universe is the correct cut now. It should have been out before Why Not but well ok.

This is the time I should say "gfrenous has to lose one track at least!!!11" but I won't because I know the one that is most likely leaving is my 10 ffffff so eliminate fromis_9.

And Alien for the supersunmi win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
