#KS⟲TY2022: The K-Pop Song of the Year 2022 Rate | #28

Well, my 3 pointer was the one I was less certain about, but now I'm pretty sure all the songs I voted for got points from other people. The perks of voting almost exclusively for forum-fave girl groups and also posting half the songs you're voting for in the thread

HappygoluckyBeneficialChipmunk-max-1mb.gif

Gutted I couldn't participate - but it's exciting to see that some of these songs were also in the shortlist I was creating as I made my way through the YouTube playlist of 2012 songs. Half of them I didn't even realise were 2012 songs. Some songs I assumed were 2012 were not as well.

Tahiti were a new discovery for me because of this.

I've no idea how many songs I worked through but I had 22 songs on my short list by the time of the deadline. Lee Hi's 1,2,3,4 was there. Tahiti were there too! They might not have made it, but they certainly were added to my music library thanks to this rate.

WAY
KARA

4 - @BEST FICTION

The next album track on our countdown is none other than KARA's Way. This is track number 1 of the Pandora mini album and whew, what a way to open an album! Pandora was absolutely the correct single choice but don't y'all think Way deserved single status too? It's a Sweetune production too, same as Pandora!

Voters:

Sigh... not this rate forcing me to listen to Super fucking Junior in the year of our lorde 2023. This is a god's test! No but Super Junior was the first K-Pop boy group that I stanned (ew) and I musta say, they really served bops back in the day, didn't they? For example: Sexy, Free & Single. And frankly, if it wasn't for the members being shitty people, I think I'd still be a stan today FFFFFFF! Oh well, Super Junior still has @Salami so they're still winning!

ry123: ew but bop

OH! MY GOD

Girl's Day makes their first appearance on our countdown with the... I don't even know how to describe this... this extravaganza that is Oh! My God. I think most of the people on the forum are more familiar with sexy concept Girl's Day. No judgment in that because I was too! Their 2013 breakout hit, Expectation/Expect/Expect Me, was my first taste of Girl's Day and for some reason I never listened to their earlier music... until now. I would say I'm glad they changed concepts and sounds but there is something about Oh! My God that I just find so charming. It's giving me early T-ara tbh. And the music video... girls, I was gagged. I need to watch it again! I can't believe BoA's music video director (her brother) directed this FFFFFFF!

DOUBLE UP
Two X

4 points

Voters:
4 - @Attis

Next up is the debut single of Two X, Double Up. Back in the early 2010s, there was at least one girl group debut every week. Like, I'm not even joking. Even Allkpop (yes, that Allkpop) launched their own girl group called New.F.O in 2011. Two X was one of the many girl groups from small- to mid-sized agencies that debuted during that time and unfortunately, they only got to release three singles before they disbanded. I think I only remember hearing their single called Ring Ma Bell which I didn't really like. This is my first time listening to Double Up and it's infinitely better than Ring Ma Bell for sure. They deserved better :(

BABY STEPS
Girls' Generation-TTS

4 points

Voters:
4 - @Pretty Places

And we have another album track! This time, it's Baby Steps by Girls' Generation-TTS! This is apparently a remake (or maybe just a demo?) of a song also titled Baby Steps by boy band Varsity. Baby Steps is decidedly more subdued than the single Twinkle, although it still features some really nice vocal moments. I mean, it's Girls' Generation-TTS... if there's one thing they'll do, it's serve vocals. And the girls' version of the song is a massive improvement from the original so yas, slay mamas!

WARRIOR
B.A.P

4 points

Voters:
2 - @ohdenny, @Slice of Life

And the first song to be voted by at least two people is the iconique Warrior by B.A.P! Like I said in my FYC post, I consider Warrior as thee debut of 2012. Like, B.A.P genuinely came out of nowhere and became the main competition of EXO in 2012? Wild. I guess this is where I admit that I was Team B.A.P back then and I'm not sorry! I just love a good underdog story, okay? No but B.A.P were so easy to root for. They had the bops, they had the looks (Daehyun, just one chance pleek!), they had the talent. But god played a really bad joke by making them debut under TS Entertainment, genuinely the worst Korean entertainment agency ever. I'm still hoping we'll get a reunion album from them (they do still hang out minus the problematic member of course) so I'm not losing hope yet!

Hello Venus

Oh my god, my bestie @Attis is losing all his songs! You deserve better, bestie! Next up on his ballot is the third single of Hello Venus, What Are You Doing Today? Hello Venus is another group that debuted in 2012 and wow, they were so, so promising. This is an unpopular opinion, I know, but I genuinely prefer their pre-sexy concept music FFFFFFF! I guess I'm just a sweet girl after all! And What Are You Doing Today? just might be my favourite single of theirs! That chorus is just... shimmering! I'm also obsessed with the handclaps for some reason.

TO YOU

Voters:
5 - @Cotton Park

Losing his first song is my oppa @Cotton Park. This is Teen Top's second single for 2012, To You. 2012 was a busy year for Teen Top as they released three singles (all top 15 hits by the way, slay) - Crazy, To You and Be Ma Girl. And I must say To You is my favourite of the three. Fresh from Sistar's Alone's success, I guess Brave Brothers was still feeling sexy and sad so he continued the sound on Teen Top's To You. Teen Top were never one of my favourites; I was Team Infinite back then FFFFFFFFF! Back looking back, they really served some bops huh! Good for them!

LOST

Voters:
5 - @RUNAWAY

Oh another solo number from a KARA member! This is Nicole's Lost which features Jinwoon from 2AM. Now, Seungyeon was my original KARA bias but I switched to Nicole thanks to this one show she did for the cable channel tvN but I can't find anything about that show now FFFFFFF! I probably just made that up in my mind. Anyway, Lost is nice! Not Nicole's finest moment as a soloist but I like it nonetheless. The sultry but sad production is a nice touch too! I hate Jinwoon. Fuck that guy.

RUNAWAY: the Japanese version is superior tbh

NAURRRRRRR I knew beforehand that I Don't Need A Man by miss A won't perform that well but I still didn't expect it to just receive one solitary vote? I guess you girlies do need a man! Look, there is no universe where I Don't Need A Man is considered top-tier miss A but I genuinely still love it FFFFFFFFFFF! Independent ladies, we rise at dawn! It's a little corny, sure, and it's a weird follow-up to the conceptual Touch. But I don't know, I just can't find it in my heart to hate this! Suzy's vocals have started to really improve here and she sings that chorus very beautifully. Kween!

BEAUTIFUL STRANGER
f(x)

5 points

Voters:
5 - @ohdenny

And our final result for tonight is another cut from f(x)'s Electric Shock mini album, the wonderful Beautiful Stranger. This song is actually performed by just three members: Amber, Luna and Krystal. I guess I can understand because Beautiful Stranger is a little more vocally challenging than the usual f(x) song. And Luna and Krystal's vocals truly shine here. Luna has always been excellent, no news there, but Krystal really surprised me here. I didn't know she could sing with this much emotion. Ice Princess no more! And you know what, I don't hate Amber's rapping here. I still like her better as a vocalist but she wasn't bad here so yay for that as well!

Agreed, leave that sexy thingy to Sistar and AOA ! This song and the MV kinda paves the way for quirky cute boppery that Red Velvet eventually popularize methinks !

ELVIS
AOA

5 points

Voters:
3 - @Crisp X
2 - @ysev

Earning five points through two votes is the debut single of AOA, Elvis. It's so weird because I remember really looking forward to AOA's debut since they were from FNC Entertainment, the agency behind FT Island and CNBlue, bands that I was into that time. But I genuinely do not remember a thing about this now FFFFFFFFF! Anyway, this is actually really good? Choa came swinging with that vocal prowess since the debut huh. And Jimin is just as iconique. Anyway, I was watching the music video and I noticed that there's a member that I don't recognize so I went to AOA's Wikipedia page, only to read that she's Youkyung and she's only a half-angel, meaning she was only a part of the group when they promoted as a band. What kind of position is that HASVJASGFJH! #JusticeforYoukyung!

The way this was in 87th place before @TéléDex graciously granted it 4 more points... poor Wonder Girls' Like This! But anyway, I'm so glad it was represented because unlike a lot of you heauxs, I actually stan this FFFFFFFFFF! Yes, it's nowhere near Wonder Girls' best but goddamn does this bop. Also, I have a special connection to this song because it's the first K-Pop choreography that I attempted to learn, kii! I thought, hmmmm, the moves actually look easy, lemme try. Girls, that leg move in the chorus almost crippled me. But it's such a fun dance to learn so I didn't mind getting injured!

REFLECTION

Our second Girls' Generation song (or third if we count TTS) is none other than the excellent Japanese track, Reflection. It was taken from the girls' second Japanese album, Girls & Peace. Oh I was obsessed with this album, y'all have no idea. I never fully got into Girls' Generation's more critically acclaimed first Japanese album but Girls & Peace totally enveloped me whole. And you know my stannage my genuine because I was a huge 2NE1 stan then and I was supposed to not enjoy Girls' Generation's music FFFFFFFFFF! But I can't make the music bop, can I? Case in point: Reflection. Wow, what a fucking electropop bop. Now can SM Entertainment make this song/album available worldwide on Spotify already? It's been years! I'm tired!

And here's another debut, this time by a true blue nugu act. This is She'z My Way! Full disclosure: I was not the biggest nugu stan back then so acts like She'z completely passed me by. And I realize now that it's such a shame because My Way is actually such a bop? There's a member here that's trying her hardest to destroy the song for me with her subpar vocals but she's not winning because I'm still stanning! That chorus is very good!

HAVE, DON'T HAVE
Dal★shabet

6 points

Voters:
6 - @vague

Leave it to Dal★shabet to always bring something new and exciting to the table. For their single Have, Don't Have, they released two versions, appropriately called Have Version and Don't Have Version. If you like more standard Dal★shabet, listen to the Have Version. But if you're into something a little more playful, listen to the Don't Have Version. Like??? What kind of genius marketing strategy??? And both versions are great so it's an all around success. But I have a weak spot for the Don't Have Version and its iconic music video. If it wasn't for Orange Caramel's Lipstick, this would be my favourite music video for 2012. It's just... so good and so fresh. And fucking camp. Camp has lost all its meaning in 2023 but if you need a reminder of what it actually is, just watch the Don't Have Version music video!

FINALLY, A MALE IDOL SOLOIST! Thank you my dear @Wills for voting for Kim Sung Kyu's excellent solo debut single, 60Sec! It would've been a travesty if this wasn't included in the rate! Kim Sung Kyu (or Sunggyu) is the main vocalist of Infinite and in 2012, he made his solo debut. And wow, he absolutely hit it out of the park with 60Sec. I love that it's such a different sound from Infinite's and although it isn't a piano ballad, Sung Kyu still got to showcase his beautiful vocals. That middle 8... I hear god!
