Hello and welcome to the #KSOTY2012 Side Rate where we will be counting down the best 90 songs of the year 2012 according to the messy unnies of the K-Popjustice subforum! Tonight, let's meet the first nine songs starting with...

THE SHADOW
BoA

1 point

Voters:
1 - @Crisp X

We begin our countdown of the best K-Pop songs of 2012 with BoA's The Shadow! It was taken from her seventh Korean album, Only One. Only One was actually the first BoA era that I followed and I thought, hmm, her nasal vocals are not for me. It took me a while to get accustomed to her vocals but I'm glad I persevered because now, I think The Shadow (and the whole Only One album tbh) is iconique.

IF YOU LOVE ME
NS Yoon-G (feat. Jay Park)

1 point

Voters:
1 - @RUNAWAY

Also receiving one point is NS Yoon-G's Jay Park-assisted If You Love Me. I... have no recollection of this song even though I was very much aware of NS Yoon-G and Jay Park's existence in 2012. Listening to the song now, oh, I know I would've stanned back then! I was a sucker for the chanteuse x rapper combo during those times, kii!

HEAVEN
Ailee

1 point

Voters:
1 - @Attis

Another 1-pointer is Ailee's debut single, the excellent Heaven. Oh I was such a debut era Ailee stan back then, y'all have no idea. As a Filipino, I was raised on singing competitions and karaoke so I was obsessed with divas (Mariah, Whitney, Celine, our very own Regine). And Ailee was just that. Let me just say that Heaven's ad libs are embedded in my core and it takes everything in me not to sing along to them whenever I'm listening to the song in public FFFFFFFFF!

CHERRY BLOSSOM ENDING
Busker Busker

1 point

Voters:
1 - @askew

Awwwww, this is one song that I didn't expect to get a vote, probably because this was HATED so much by International K-Pop stans back then. This is Busker Busker's perennial spring hit, Cherry Blossom Ending. I couldn't even admit I liked this back then because I didn't wanna get bullied by the commenters on sites like Netizenbuzz and Asian Junkie! But I really do like it primarily because Jang Beom-June's voice is just... it does things to me!

PLEASE DON'T
K.Will

2 points

Voters:
2 - @Overdose

We begin our 2-pointers with Please Don't, arguably K.Will's most popular song internationally. But let's not kid ourselves, it's not the song that's well-loved. It's really the music video. I won't spoil it, of course. Just watch it and you will understand.

HASTA LUEGO
Tahiti

2 points

Voters:
2 - @thommyh

Next up is Hasta Luego, Tahiti's first comeback single. Whoooo, this brings so many memories and I'm not sure they're good ones, kii! You see, Tahiti was one of the nugu girl groups that competed in the Underrated Queens of K-Pop Rate. And let's just say... we weren't nice to them, oh at all. (I was definitely the biggest hater though FFFFFFF!) Listening to Hasta Luego now, I'd say it has definitely grown on me. Dare I say, I'm actually bopping?

DORADORA
U-KISS

2 points

Voters:
2 - @Joli Chat

Also receiving two points is DORADORA by U-KISS. U-KISS were one of the earliest K-Pop acts that I became aware of thanks to their 2010 song Bingeul Bingeul which was such a hit here in the Philippines. Like, that song was competing with 2NE1, Super Junior and Girls' Generation's most popular songs here FFFFFFF! Imagine my shock when I learned that U-KISS weren't exactly an A-list K-Pop group in Korea. Anyway, I digress. I think DORADORA was the last U-KISS single that I paid attention to before I jumped to other nugu boy groups (although I briefly returned to the fandom during the Quit Playing era in 2014 kii). That chorus is still such an earworm. And Kiseop and AJ were so hot in the music video, kii!

Voters:
2 - @FunkyButChic

Oof, we have our second U-KISS song! This time, it's their second 2012 single, Believe. I actually like this foray on electropop. Issa bop for sure! Maybe I should've continued stanning back then... But anyway, yes, have some more U-KISS!

1.2.3.4
Lee Hi

2 points

Voters:
2 - @askew

Our last result for tonight is the excellent debut single of Lee Hi, 1.2.3.4! Oh it hurt to remove this from my top 10 (I was initially gonna give this 4 points) but I realized it just wasn't as strong as the other songs in my ballot. See, I am a very rational voter keke! No but this was probably my most anticipated debut of 2012 and it did not disappoint. I started following Lee Hi during her stint in the reality talent show KPOPSTAR where she finished second to Jimin Park (now known as Jamie). I was hurt that she didn't win but I was elated that she got signed by YG Entertainment anyway. Yes, 2012 was my peak YG stan era FFFFFF like I know I would stan a cockroach if it was from my YG Entertainment! 1.2.3.4 was such an assured and confident debut for Lee Hi. Watching the music video now makes me so weirdly proud of her, like I gave birth to her or something. She was so awkward back then (she was 16 okay!) but boy that voice simply cannot be denied. A star was born!

This whole post is so- sdlfjsjlfsk we're experiencing the same K-pop life, huh ? The Asian Junkie mention omg, how is that bitch doing now ? Kpopalypse ? Antikpopfangirl ?

And you got me there with Ailee, Heaven is such a huge song in SEA, even bigger than many major hits at that time and still a vocal wanking staple in nearest karaoke.

I still follow Asian Junkie on Twitter, bestie FFFFFFFFFF!! Kpopalypse’s radio show died like three years ago (I used to request songs for shit and giggles). He was dragged HARD on Twitter two weeks ago when he shaded Nugu Promoter TAFSHSNSJSJS!! And Antikpopfangirl (the site) has died years ago, I think? I genuinely have no idea kii!!

Shoutout to Seoul Beats and K-Pop K-Fans too, kii!!

God we are so old, I’m crying!!

I had this in my shortlist, and it almost made it to the top 10. I don't know how much of a difference it would have made, but it's a bop regardless.

I'm sorry unnies but I can only reveal the songs that received 3 points tonight! I had a really busy day today so I had to start writing for the rate really late... and now it's 1AM and I have to get up early tomorrow for work. I'll make it up to you, I promise.

But for tonight, let's meet our six 3 pointers! Starting with...

ZIG ZAG
f(x)

3 points

Voters:
3 - @ohdenny

We begin Day 2 of results with our first f(x) song, Zig Zag, taken from their second mini album, Electric Shock. Electric Shock was the first f(x) era that I followed. Of course, I already knew about the group beforehand but there's something about this era that made them click to me. And as they say, the rest is herstory. Zig Zag is definitely one of the best cuts of the mini album. It's playful and fun and fresh - literally everything I could ask for an f(x) song. And it aged beautifully too! Iconique.

DRIPPING TEARS
Son Dam Bi

3 points

Voters:
3 - @Ana Raquel

@Ana Raquel actually voted for Son Dam Bi's Queen but I learned that it was released in 2010. So I contacted @Ana Raquel and asked her to change her vote but I guess she hasn't read my message yet. So I made the executive decision to give her 3 points to Son Dam Bi's Dripping Tears which was released in 2012.

Next up is Son Dam Bi's Brave Brothers-produced single, Dripping Tears. I'm gonna repeat this phrase all throughout the rate but yes, this was my introduction to Miss Son. And wow, what an introduction. The song bops for sure but it's the music video that really made the most impact to me. What kind of Lady Gaga homage? I love it so much! They don't make K-Pop music videos like this anymore and I'm so sad!

For some reason, I didn't think you're a @Big Bang stan, @Wills unnie? Interessante! But no shade because I too was a huge, huge stan not just of Monster but really, all of Big Bang's releases in 2012! Like, this was the peak of my stannage FFFFFFFF! And the music video is a whole extravaganza too! The drama? The fashion? The Illuminati? Taeyang's kimbap hair? Iconique!

Leave it to KARA to do the absolute most! Who else released a whole ass album that contains just solo songs of the members complete with extravagant music videos? Only KARA! Kweens! Day Dream is Gyuri's solo and yath, she brought drama! Love the Latin-inspired production and love Gyuri's vocals too!

DANCING QUEEN
Girls' Generation

3 points

Voters:
3 - @YRSHKD

Our first Girls' Generation song is none other than Dancing Queen, a remake of the Duffy classic, Mercy. Apparently, this was recorded back in 2008 and was supposed to be the single over Gee - yes, the song that made Girls' Generation the National Girl Group of Korea. I don't know why this was pulled back then but it was then released as the pre-release single for the group's fourth Korean album, I Got A Boy. I... actually really like this, kii! I think this was such a great showcase of the girls' vocals. True, it's not their most exciting release but it's still cute! My core memory associated to this release is that the music video caused quite a commotion when it was released because the hat Sunny wore at the end of music video contained the words "WELCOME MOTHERFUCKERS." SM re-released the music video, this time without the curse words. Thankfully, I still have a copy of the original music video somewhere in my college hard drive because I used to download music videos back then and then re-watched them at home, kii!

BING BING
Crayon Pop

3 points

Voters:
3 - @Attis

Ughhhh this song brings back so many memories! I'll talk about my introduction to Crayon Pop in another post (wink) but for tonight, let's talk about the brilliance of this little song called Bing Bing! It was the sub-title track of their first mini album called... Crayon Pop The 1st Mini Album, kii! And after all this time, I'm still stupidly in love with this stupid ass song. It's maybe not as kooky as their other singles but it's still just as good, if not better! The music video gave us a glimpse of Crayon Pope's charms too. Like, they were still serving even with zero budget! Truly the original nugu blueprint!

Nooooooooooooo I can't believe I forgot to vote for this. I miss Son Dam-bi so much, a true 2nd gen icon. Was she vocally challenged? A bit. Is she the most beautiful popstar that's ever walked the Earth? Yes. The song is, of course, a classic.
