Damn, these back-to-back-to-back JYP eliminations? I'm gagged! After ITZY and NMIXX, it's time for a Twice-related song to go. The victim? It's Tzuyu's Run Away.
Run Away is the lead single of Tzuyu's debut solo mini album, abouTZU. It was composed by Andrea Rosario, Elsa Curran, Davin Kingston and Johnny Simpson with lyrics by J.Y. Park "The Asiansoul" (his words, not mine). Run Away sadly didn't appear on the main Circle Digital Chart but it did peak at number 22 on the component Download Chart. It did a lot better in her native Taiwan, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Taiwan Songs Chart.
Let's be honest. I don't think anyone of us anticipated Tzuyu to be the third Twice member to debut solo. Certainly not before the likes of Mina, Chaeyoung and even Jeongyeon, even though reports say she doesn't want to go solo. Personally speaking, even as a casual Tzuyu fan, I didn't really have high expectations for her debut FFFFFFF! Yeah, that sounds mean but she just... doesn't scream ☆SOLO STAR☆ to me. So I was very pleasantly surprised when I found myself really liking her debut solo song, Run Away. I mean, what kind of second gen bop, right?
I know a lot of you will (negatively) comment on Tzuyu's vocals and yes, I agree. She is not a strong vocalist and I'd argue her vocals are actually what's stopping the song from going from good to great. I feel like in the hands of a more capable vocalist, the song will really soar... especially that chorus. That chorus just screams ♛DIVA VOCALS♛ and sadly, Tzuyu did not provide that. Despite her vocal shortcomings, I still think the song works. The bones of the song are just too good, I fear.
Anyway, lemme take this opportunity to promo Losing Sleep, THEE actual best song on Tzuyu's debut mini album. Now that's a10 9.5!
