City pop is truly dead and gone here in the K-Popjustice subforum. Proof? We're saying goodbye to the genre's lone rate entry, Kim Areum's Full Moon (feat. SPACECOWBOY) at number 84. What the fuck!
Full Moon is the second single from Kim Areum's fifth full album, Retro Wave. It was composed by SPACECOWBOY, Jade and CROQ with lyrics written by Kim Areum.
After years of bubbling under the shadows of Yukika (come back, unnie!), Kim Areum finally becomes the K-city pop's main leading lady and makes her #KSOTY Rate debut with, I would say, one of her stronger efforts in Full Moon. If the production sounds eerily similar to some Lovelyz songs, that's probably because noted Lovelyz collaborator SPACECOWBOY produced Full Moon. And in my first listen, I definitely got very strong Lovelyz vibes which is always a plus to me. If there is one thing that K-Pop sorely misses, it's Lovelyz's emotional anthems. Thank you, SPACECOWBOY-nim, for bringing it back!
But while I agree Kim Areum is a lovely(z) vocalist in her own right, a part of me longs for some Lovelyz-level of vocal slayage on Full Moon. Just imagine Kei's dramatic as fuck vocals in that middle 8... my god, I'm already shaking from the thought alone. But like I said, it's not like Kim Areum is not serving vocally on Full Moon. She very much does. I guess I'm just missing Lovelyz, that's all.
Kim Areum is one of the most prolific acts in Korean music today so don't be shocked if we get another full album from her this year. Thank you for keeping the K-city pop genre well and alive, unnie!
THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@mika (2): "Not of a fan of that retro modern disco"
@eccentricsimply (3.5): "Why is she whispering girl sing please ddddddddd This song would've been maybe okay if the girl was SINGING but as it is it's just so."
@savilizabeths (5): "The vocal delivery is pretty but gets a little tired over time."
@clowezra (8): "Hadn’t heard from her in years, lovely wee rate discovery."[Slicey: WAITTT really, unnie? OMG, we're failing to spread her music then FFFFFFF!!]
@codecat (8.25): "Awwww I love Kim Areum! She knows her lane very well and the execution is mostly flawless...when there's no campy vocoder involved! Amazing vocals as always but, as the secret 9th Lovelyz member, that shouldn't come as a surprise."[Slicey: Not u also hating the vocoder omfg!!]
@Oleander (8.25): "I love Ms. Areum and this is a very nice song but at one point while listening, I realized that for a large portion of the song she's giving Selena Gomez singing a Lovelyz song and I can't get that thought out of my head."[Slicey: This is... one of the harshest insults I have ever come across AKDHKSDHGFASD!!]
@boom bazooka joe (9): "This feels expensive, lush, and sexy."[Slicey: Thanks for describing me perfectly, unnie!!]
@Ana Raquel (10): "I saw this girl grow up her fanbase here and now she's a KSOTY artist??????? I am so proud!!!!!!! Thanks for whoever superbloomed this (was it sora)" [Slicey: U know it's sora!!]
@FunkyButChic (10): "Her one-woman Lovelyz shtick is saving pop music."
@soratami (10): "This queen has been serving quality for so many years, it was due time she appeared in the most prestigious institution of the K-Pop industry, ie the KSOTY rate on forum.popjustice.com. This is pure excellence and easily one of the best things she’s ever released, and anyone giving it a low score or going “i’M sO siCk of CiTY pOp” in the comments will start coughing in three days."[Slicey: Thankfully no one commented that sister FFFFFFF!!]
@Oleander (8.25): "I love Ms. Areum and this is a very nice song but at one point while listening, I realized that for a large portion of the song she's giving Selena Gomez singing a Lovelyz song and I can't get that thought out of my head."[Slicey: This is... one of the harshest insults I have ever come across AKDHKSDHGFASD!!]
actually, this was my original commentary for this song:
"Why is this kinda giving Namie Amuro as a city pop singer? I'm sick of it!"
but i changed it for some reason!
I didn’t even think of this as city pop but I yeah it is. City pop is either bloody amazing or just absolutely fine.
And this falls into the latter with me. Wouldn’t skip it but wouldn’t choose it either.
And with that, we're left with just two tripleS songs. Today, we say goodbye to tripleS Glow's Inner Dance.
Inner Dance is the debut single of tripleS Glow which is the eighth official subunit of tripleS. It was composed by AGWi and Kim Ji Seop with lyrics written by TAEO, Gu is 9 and Sungwoo Kim. Inner Dance didn't appear in the main Circle Digital Chart but it peaked at number 79 on the component Download Chart.
MODHAUS debuted three new tripleS subunits last year which I feel is a little unhinged. Yeah, just a tiny bit. I complain because I don't like the uneven promotion for the three subunits. One got a full album while the other two only got one song each. Where's the fairness, Miss Jaden Jeong? But I digress. We're not really here to talk about my complaints about MODHAUS' shenanigans. We're here to talk about Inner Dance and for the most part, I think it's a pretty solid song.
I think the production work is the strongest part of Inner Dance. This was produced by someone called AGWi and the only other song they produced that I recognize is ARTMS' Unf/Air. Lemme follow their production work from now; they seem very promising. Of the four tripleS songs featured here, I think this is the one that sounds closest to NewJeans. The first few notes of the song literally reminds me of NewJeans' New Jeans FFFFFFF! I'm not complaining by the way. I like this type of sound, I like this type of production. I'm just... observing, hehe~.
Vocals-wise, hmmm, there's really nothing to write home about FFFFFFFF! I mean, the girls don't sound bad. Maybe just faceless? Lazy? Bland? It's a very anonymous vocal display which, meh, I have come to accept when it comes to tripleS so it doesn't really bother me anymore.
THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@Salami (1): "Oh it's NewJeans. Oh no it's not, it's another group ripping off that tired sound. It's all so boring."
@eliminathan (3): "tripleS Glow is reminding me not to take for granted the vocals in NewJeans cause otherwise their songs would all sound like this." [Slicey: FFFFFF can't argue with you on this.]
@Joli Chat (4.5): "life was better when everyone was releasing trop bops instead of having to go through the 10th reheated Ditto of the month."[Slicey: This does not sound like Ditto, come awn mama!]
@Serg. (6): "I had to give this a higher score than it deserves so my scores would get accepted #disbandTripleS"
@savilizabeths (7): "It's cute but not up there with their best. The chorus is....not it for me."
@ultraviolet (7): "TripleS is like my favorite group right now but this song is just so stale compared to the rest of their output in 2024. I’m grateful for whoever submitted this but there were just sooo many better options ddd."[Slicey: FFFFFFF yathhhhh!! Get back at @ysev for saying the same to your Superbloom Midnight Flower!]
@boom bazooka joe (7.5): "It's cute! I go back and forth on finding that chorus catchy and annoying."
@clowezra (8): "Rate discovery for me, adore this."
@codecat (10): "There's something about Jaden Jeong giving some random teenagers this dumb litty #420 #BLAZED song and making them sing polite English requests such as "I wanna talk in private all night" that cracks me up"
@Cotton Park (10): "If we could have more of these little chill bangers from tripleS, I would be happy."
@love choerry motion (10): "They have one smash every year and this is IT!"[Slicey: FFFFFF this is soooo shady considering they released two full albums last year, bye!!]
@mika (10): "Only 1 song for this unit ? Where's the rest ?"[Slicey: I'm afraid that's all we'll ever get from this unit, bestie... #ThankYoutripleSGlow]
@soratami (10): "This was one of my superbloom potentials so I’m glad someone saved it. Such a perfect chill bop, it’s genuinely relaxing to listen to. Might actually be my favourite tripleS song."
@ysev (10): "One of the few times where their lazy vocals just work. They're giving las chicas del barrio who chew bubblegum loud. And of course I will always be here for a NewJeans/PinkPantheress redux."
@ysev (5): "My God... tripleS is probably the group with the highest number of amazing b-sides right now and this is what y'all chose to superbloom? Tragic!"
@ultraviolet (7): "TripleS is like my favorite group right now but this song is just so stale compared to the rest of their output in 2024. I’m grateful for whoever submitted this but there were just sooo many better options ddd."
