Not even the legendary KARA can escape floppage this time around. Remember when When I Move ranked 10th in the #KSOTY2022 Rate? Well, KARA couldn't quite replicate that success as their lone rate entry this year, I Do I Do, struggles and crashes at number 78.

I Do I Do is the first single released by KARA in almost two years. It was composed by Lee Joo Hyoung, Maxx Song, Ciara Muscat and NILD with lyrics written by Lee O Neul, Lee Seul Ji, So Do Yeon (wavecloud), 329 and HOLLIN. I Do I Do did not enter the Circle Digital Chart but appeared at number 9 on the component Download Chart. It saw more success in Japan as it peaked at number 7 on the Oricon Singles Chart.

Hmmmmm, I feel like I under-scored this one a tiny bit. I don't know, you guys. While I was watching the music video as I was huffing and puffing in my walking pad, I felt the song speak to me for the very first time FFFFFFFF!! Why did the middle 8 almost got me crying? Bye! These girls are legends and they don't owe us anything at this point in their career. And yet! They keep on giving! I feel like I'm disrespecting them by not awarding this more points!

No but I think my score of 7.5 is still valid because yes, while I do think I Do I Do is not bad by any means, I still wouldn't call it "essential KARA," you know what I mean? I know I shouldn't really compare it to KARA's best songs but I can't help it. And even if I only compare it to the songs competing in this rate, I'm afraid I Do I Do still doesn't quite stack up to the best of the bunch. I mean, it's nice for sure! Maybe just not K-Pop Song of the Year material.

I do (I do) wanna commend KARA for still releasing new music though and I hope I Do I Do's lack of success doesn't deter them from releasing more original music. Just give us more When I Moves and less I Do I Dos and we will stan, unnies! Hehe~

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@mika (4): "I don't I don't but the middle8 is nice"

@eccentricsimply (5): "Worst offense about this song is that it's kinda boring, which is the last word I associate with Kara." [Slicey: Right... I Do I Do lacks that signature KARA bite.]

@boom bazooka joe (6): "I want to love this because KARA, but it's a "just there" type of song for me, made more obvious by the fact that every time it popped up on Shuffle while I was listening to the playlist, I thought I was hearing it for the first time again in a "nothing is sticking" type of way."

@soratami (7): "Don’t know if it’s just me, but there’s a good chunk of K-Pop songs that I feel sound like they were created from the exact same components as as about a thousand others, and while pleasant on the ears it’s really hard to have any strong feelings about them one way or the other because they just make absolutely zero impact." [Slicey: Personally, I don't feel this way about K-Pop singles. K-Pop b-sides however... oh there is a template for those for sure FFFFFFF!!]

@Vixen (8): "That was cute, and still very faithful to their sound."

@savilizabeths (8.5): "This really brings back the feelings of older Kpop generations and leaves me feeling so nostalgic. It's gorgeous!"

@BEST FICTION (10): "I had no idea if KARA would actually have another release after When I Move, but I am so pleasantly surprised. This gives me KARA's Japanese discography vibes, like their earlier singles Jet Coaster Love & Go Go Summer! I know it will probably not do great in the rate, but I'm so happy it's here." [Slicey: And I'm happy you're happy, sister!!]

@codecat (10): "Omg this is so gorgeous. Bridal extravaganza... I'm ready to go to the registry office wearing white!!!! KARA is such a special group and I can feel so much love when I listen to this song..."

@ysev (10): "Now this is what K-pop should sound like."

As I mentioned in my commentary, this song was for the Japanese discography enjoyers. No, it's not a Sweetune production and it doesn't have that huge burst of energy in the chorus we know their Korean title tracks to have. But it showcases their sweeter aesthetic perfectly. I knew it wasn't going to do well, so I'm not bothered. It is just strange how many worse songs are still in but as I said, this rate makes no sense so far.

Well, at least Sumin did better this year compared to last year, kii! Tonight, we say goodbye to her and Slom's excellent Why, Why, Why. And yes, this is my Superbloom Song! Those who tanked this, y'all better sleep with one eye open tonight.

Why, Why, Why is a track from Sumin and Slom's second collaborative album, Miniseries 2. I want to say this is a single... but I'm not really sure about that so I won't. It didn't receive a music video (none of the songs from the Miniseries 2 album did) but it did get a couple of live outings. Anyway, Why, Why, Why was composed by Sumin and Slom with the lyrics written by Sumin. It was nominated for Song of the Year at the 22nd Korean Music Awards, arguably the most prestigious music awards in the country. It ultimately lost to aespa's Supernova.

To be honest, I almost didn't submit a Superbloom Song just because my original pick, Red Velvet's Last Drop, was already chosen. So I had to come up with a last minute choice and had to choose between this and VVUP's Ain't Nobody. I ultimately went with this because I like being pretentious FFFFFFF! Come on, K-Indiejustice member @Slice of Life! No but kidding aside, I truly believe Sumin and Slom deserved to compete in the rate with any of the songs from the Miniseries 2 album. It just so happened that Why, Why, Why was my favourite of the bunch. And I also felt like Sumin deserved a do-over after flopping in last year's rate. She deserved to be represented by a better song! Apologies to @clowezra unnie; I'll stop talking shit about Best Friend (feat. Woo) from now on, hehe~.

At times like this, I really wish I know more about music on a technical level. Because try as I may, I just do not have the vernacular to describe the technical marvels behind a song like Why, Why, Why. It's such an interesting song to me genre-wise. It sounds nothing like anything in K-Pop right now. To me, it sounds funky and soulful, maybe a little jazzy. And it weirdly sounds both old and new. It's a classic but with a modern touch. It's produced to perfection. Perfection!

And then we have Sumin's vocals which are just... so singular. So her. I love hearing a voice that I can immediately recognize. More than her technical abilities as a singer, it's the way she delivers the lines that really take the song (or any of her songs, really) to a higher level. So effortless, so cool, and so unpretentious. She has It. The fact that she's not more famous will never sit right with me. I'm just gonna pretend she's ahead of her time and Korea will one day realize just how good she is.

Anyway, my Superwhatever Songs never do well in #KSOTY Rates so I'm not too bothered by this result. I think it did better than I anticipated. I will admit I almost quit the rate when this was flopping in the 90s though FFFFFFF! You tasteless heauxs! But yeah, I just hope someone becomes a fan of Sumin, Slom and their music through this one song. That alone will make me very happy. That alone will make this floppage worth it!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@mika (2): "Some might wonder"

@savilizabeths (5): "Pretty enough background music."

@Serg. (6.5): "There just has to be a random song that y'all think is serving Indie Darling puss but is actually just an average song, but I love this years inclusion more than previous ones." [Slicey: Thank you for not completely tanking it, sister!!]

@aux (7): "Me when someone asks me to name the three best title tracks by Taeyeon:" [Slicey: FFFFFFFFFFF I HATE U!!!!]

@soratami (8): "I usually love a K-Indie moment but this feels like it’s missing a little something to take it to the next level."

@Vixen (8): "Chorus kinda bops… She kinda ate on the bridge too" [Slicey: I knew you'd be here for Sumin unnie's vocals!!]

@boom bazooka joe (10): "Easily one of my albums of the year. Pretty much any track on it would have gotten a 10."

@clowezra (10): "She continues to be one of the most exciting artists in the world, her taste level is through the bloody roof. Love her and this so much." [Slicey: Consider this my apology for kinda tanking Best Friend last year, unnie. Hehe~ love u]

@Cotton Park (10): "Sumin and Slom knocked it out of the park with this amazing album. And might be one of the best things to come out of Seoul since barbeque."
