The last song to miss a coveted spot in our Top 70 is Sorn's Heartstorm. Heartstorm is the title track of Sorn's first solo mini album. It was written by Sorn and Alina Smith and produced by LYRE.

The last time Sorn appeared in a #KSOTY Rate was in 2022 when her second solo single, Sharp Objects, made it all the way to number 43. Since then, Sorn has been hard at work, releasing music non-stop. Wikipedia tells me she released ten singles since Sharp Objects which... wow, even Taylor Swift would bow down to this kween's work ethic (ok, maybe not but still). I'll be honest; I've not really been following most of Sorn's solo releases. I basically just listen to them whenever they randomly enter the K-Popjustice Charts. And most often than not, her singles don't sound bad at all. And that's also the case with Heartstorm.

Sorn seems to be unable to move on from Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia; Heartstorm literally sounds like Physical. And you know what? I don't mind! True, this sound has been done to death, it lack originality, etc. etc. But at the end of the day... I can't lie, it still bops hard. And Sorn also delivers a great vocal performance here. The drama... the hunger... Dua Lipa should watch out. No but Sorn has always been a competent vocalist and nice to hear her flex those vocals every now and then.

But while I think Heartstorm is good, I think it would do Sorn good to also explore different sounds for her future releases. I think she can do a variety of other genres and she should not be limiting herself. And please invest in your visuals, unnie! I know you have the money. Rooting for you, sister!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@askew (2.75): "The title for this on YouTube... please act your age." [Slicey: AHSGFJKHSGFJHSAFG!! Can't defend her on this one.]

@mika (3): "This really sounds like not a good year for Finland on Eurovision"

@ysev (4): "The way this woman never gets it right." [Slicey: This lie! Stream Scorpio, which is still her best song!]

@codecat (5): "One more year where we're all subjected to this kind of production. Plus Sorn. It's too damn close to fall into the Melodifestivalen category, it did hurt me like a bitch (lol) but it's not thaaaaat bad. Here's 5 dollars"

@Serg. (5): "What the hell is this pathetic clickbait title? No class AT ALL.." [Slicey: HELPIANAAAAAA!!]

@thommyh (6): "I'm kinda ctfu at Dua Lipa's 'Physical' getting the biggest rip-off (the verses + pre-chorus/melody/instrumental are nearly identical at some points..) of all time like 5 years later." [Slicey: Kween of recycling tbh!]

@love choerry motion (7): "She's not afraid to be the Khia of South Korea so I have nothing but the utmost respect for her."

@Crisp X (8): "It's about time she gets her flowers on here" [Slicey: Maybe next time, unnie...]

@eccentricsimply (8): "This is surprisingly good dddddd"

@roblognick (8): "It's a bit of a throwback sound."

@savilizabeths (8): "I haven't checked her out since the bop that was Sharp Objects. I'm a clown."

@ultraviolet (8): "She stayed in 2020 but that’s ok!" [Slicey: EXACTLY!]

@boom bazooka joe (8.5): "Sorn is a funny one for me. I will literally never seek her out and promptly forget about her in between releases, but every time she pops up on one of these rates or on my feed, I kind of love the song. Justice for Rowdy!"

@Vixen (8.5): "Wait I'm kind of bopping? I haven't grown tired of a good 80s throwback, so I can't be mad at that. I'm bopping, what can I say? Also, she sounds great. Good adlibs too."

@Macsun (8.75): "I don’t care for Sorn but a BOP is a BOP!"

@soratami (9): "Honestly I’m glad someone is keeping this type of 80s-influenced pop alive, even if the trend has mostly passed by now. Certainly stands out in a sea of PinkPantheress/NewJeans clones." [Slicey: Now she needs to resuscitate the tropical pop sound!]

@Ana Raquel (10): "Add some guitar riffs in here and you have a power metal track (compliment)"

@eliminathan (10): "As punishment for the Yeeun tankage last year we're back to the Sorn music!" [Slicey: The way I thought you'd Superbloom Hyolyn's Wait instead... Justice for that unnie!]

What can I say, the people who like talented vocalists get it (despite the shade!) and then there's the low scorers who would listen to just about anything.

whitney-houston-singers.gif

Also this song is not the title track in the K-pop sense that it is not the promoted single (that would be Nobody) so let's not all get up in arms that the social media influencer made a clickbait title for a b-side kjdflssf

It was only a matter of time for this... and the whole of Weki Meki... to be eliminated. But it still hurts, you know? Still, we have to do this. I have to do this. Tonight, we say goodbye to Weki Meki's CoinciDestiny.

CoinciDestiny is the final single of beloved girl group Weki Meki. It was composed by member Suyeon, MCK (ARTiffect), BORAN and Tea Belle with lyrics written by members Suyeon and Rina, BORAN and Enzo. CoinciDestiny did not enter the Circle Digital Chart, but it peaked at number 45 on the component Download Chart.

This was Weki Meki's first single in three years and to be honest, in my heart of hearts, I didn't even expect we'd get one final single from them. But the girls, especially leader Suyeon, worked hard to give us something before we all bid farewell to the group that was Weki Meki. And for a disbandment single, I have to say CoinciDestiny is one of the better ones. I'm trying to think of disbandment/final singles that I like more than CoinciDestiny and I could only come up with two: Sistar's Lonely and I.O.I's Downpour. So yeah, while CoinciDestiny does not touch any of Weki Meki's best singles, at least it sounds like some thought was put into it. And it bops... in a sad way. But a bop's a bop!

Like a few of you mentioned, CoinciDestiny doesn't really work as a lyric. The girls don't even pronounce it in full FFFFFFF! That's why I unfortunately had to deduct a point from my score because of that. But really, the rest of the song is very good. I wanna put the spotlight on the middle 8 because, ugh, what a gorgeous little section. Suyeon singing her lungs out for that high note? We hear you, mama! We fucking do.

I think a lot of you know that Weki Meki is a very special group to me. The older forum members might remember me promoting Weki Meki from the very beginning like my life depended on it... until it got to a point that they had no choice but to stan the group themselves. (It helped that Weki Meki's music improved with every comeback.) You know, I consider that one of my finest contributions to this subforum's herstory. I really do.

I don't really know how to end this... review? eulogy? elimination post? Whatever it is, I guess I'll just end this by saying thank you to my Weki Meki girlies. Your music might have been underrated, underappreciated by the overwhelming majority for the whole duration of your career but please know that it really brought me happiness whenever I listen to them. And I know I am not alone in that experience. Your legacy will live on. I will make sure of that. Farewell, my kweens!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@aux (5): "Goodbye goodbye goodbye, you were bigger than the whole sky..."

@mika (5): "It feels a bit bland"

@Joli Chat (6): "their disbandment notice was in the box at the end of the music video and they looked so happy because they were finally free from Fantagio’s horrible management."

@Serg. (6): "I know they were happy af to open that first paycheck finally after disbanding and see $35"

@Vixen (7): "Not a bad song, but it's just a tad bit sterile, no? I guess as far as 'goodbye' singles, there are worse (namely very boring ballads) and this is perfectly listenable, but it won't exactly challenge their stronger singles, and a part of me wishes we could have seen them go out with a proper bang."

@love choerry motion (7.5): "OK this is good, a bit boring but good."

@savilizabeths (7.5): "I've never really been invested in Weki Meki but it does sadden me to see them go, especially after how poorly they were handled by their company. This is quite a stunning goodbye song."

@boom bazooka joe (8): ""CoinciDestiny" is clunky as hell as a lyric, but the song is kinda beautiful regardless."

@soratami (8): "This isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but I guess it hits a little harder knowing it’s their last song. Farewell queens and thank you for all the bops over the years <3"

@eccentricsimply (8.5): "Kudos to them for making a proper good song for their last release as a group instead of a boring, limp, basic ballad!"

@eliminathan (8.75): "This song is really good especially considering it's Weki Meki."

@BEST FICTION (10): "I'll miss you Weki Meki. You were too beautiful for this world."

@thommyh (10): "Fantagio executives you will begin coughing uncontrollably on June 28, 2029, at 4:42 PM."

The next two eliminations involve soloists. Tonight, we say goodbye to The Deep's lone rate entry, NPC. NPC is a song taken from The Deep's fourth mini album, Electric Pink. It was composed by The Deep and Weissen, with The Deep writing the lyrics.

The Deep made quite the splash last year as her breakout single, BAPPI, ranked 32nd, beating a lot of artists with bigger budgets. A true Popjustice moment for nugus! This year though, she's not as lucky as NPC only managed to reach 69th place. To be honest, I did expect this to do better than this. Like, I was so sure it was a lock for top 50. Alas, that wasn't the case.

NPC was initially one of my favourite songs from the Electric Pink mini album and that hasn't changed until now. I still really like it despite not really listening to it, you know? That's why I could only give it a score just below 9. I think it's great; it's just not one of my absolute faves. As with most The Deep songs, the production takes centerstage on NPC. It's also my favourite part of the song. I like how she mixed both harder and softer production elements without sounding too messy. Those post-chorus (?) bleep bloops? Yum!

The Deep continues to be one of the most prolific artists in recent memory. The Electric Pink EP was only released in December 2024 and she already released two singles since then. One is a collaboration with Genick and Jacotanu called Gasoline, and the other is the solo effort Make Up. Listen to them if you haven't yet!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@eliminathan (2): "Not good by any stretch of the imagination. I'm sure the PC music girlies (read: not me) will love it!" [Slicey: This Carlota xcx shade omg]

@Salami (2): "Sorry I hate it. I was going to give it a 0 if it wasn't for that little switch up about a minute in but then it returns to hell."

@Vixen (5): "Okay aespa…." [Slicey: Okay, I thought I was crazy because I do kinda hear aespa here too but I mean it as a compliment kii!]

@ysev (5): "It's giving 2022 aespa and then dollar store Sophie. Idk idk... kinda sick of this sound. I also hate the term NPC outside of gaming. Maybe the US of A made some points by banning Tik Tok." [Slicey: Throwback to that one user (or maybe multiple people?) who got dragged for using NPC in the previous Random Thoughts thread JASHFKHSAKFHK!!]

@Joli Chat (6.5): "its giving “A drug from God” which is not that good of a thing lol, cute bridge tho!"

@codecat (6.75): "It's cool. It did leave an impression. I'm definitely overstimulated (negative)"

@boom bazooka joe (7): "I've been very curious to check out this album, but just haven't yet. This song has a lot of really cool elements." [Slicey: Gurl, listen to it NEOW!]

@clowezra (7): "I love her SO much and want to score her way higher, but I just haven’t clicked with this project with the way I have with her previous works. Just not getting the levels of melody I expect from her, love the cute SOPHIE nod though."

@eccentricsimply (7): "This probably would go hard at a club."

@savilizabeths (8): "Is it bad that I didn't expect to like this? Why am I kind of addicted? It scratches something in good in my brain. It really never stops surprising you, maybe I'll have to jump on the bandwagon." [Slicey: Welcome to Team Talent, sister!!]

@Cotton Park (9): "Another of a growing bunch of underground Kpop artists. Not my favorite by The Deep but she's always unusual and inventive."

@soratami (9): "Wish it was OPPA here instead, not only because it’s my fave of hers but also so my girl Ash-B, who I’ve considered supersaving twice now (stream Palm Tree and Wish), could finally appear in KSOTY, but this slaps as well."

@Ana Raquel (10): "THANK YOU whoever supersunmied her in KSOTY 2023 because it's easily one of my favorite K-pop discoveries in a while. I nearly gave NPC a lower score because I don't think it's as strong as Girls Like Me but this is too good to be scored something else."

@love choerry motion (10): "Just iconic and definition of for the arts, not the charts" [Slicey: We HAVE to do something so The Deep would finally stop being nugu tho!]

@mika (10): "Am I a NPC ? Nice hommage to SOPHIE"

@thommyh (10): "The BEAT on this song... SOPHIE's spirit was in the studio that day and I don't say that lightly. Easiest song submission of my life. That's my MAMA. You can tank, you can do whatever, that's my mama, I don't care she can have whatever she wants 'cause that's my mama." [Slicey: I'm sorry you have to wake up to this elimination, sister..]
