Two songs down, one more to go. Will NMIXX even see top 50 at this point? That remains to be seen. But tonight, let's focus on Run For Roses as it exits the competition at number 63.

Run For Roses is track number 3 of NMIXX's second mini album, Fe3O4: Break. It was composed by Greg Bonnick, Hayden Chapman, Taet Chesterton and Danny Shah, with lyrics written by Young K of DAY6, Lee Seu-ran and Frankie Day (The Hub). Run For Roses was the first song we heard from the Fe3O4: Break era. Yes, even earlier than the pre-release single, Soñar (Breaker). Run For Roses was first performed by NMIXX during their first fan concert, NMIXX Change Up: Mixx University, in October 2023. Run For Roses sadly didn't enter the main Circle Digital Chart but it did peak at number 39 on the component Download Chart.

I think it's safe to claim that Run For Roses is a massive fan favourite. I see it getting brought up everywhere whenever NMIXX's best songs is the topic. Personally though, for the longest time, I thought it was highly overrated. I couldn't believe when fans would say it's better than both Soñar (Breaker) and Dash. I never said this out loud because my bestie @ohnostalgia is the biggest fan of the song FFFFFFFF!! She even chose this as her Superbloom Song. But I'm setting myself free today! This is my truth, etc. Sorry unnie!

However, the song miraculously grew on me during the voting period for this rate, kii! Something about it just... clicked. Is it because of Lily's tasteful vocal gymnastics during the second verse? Or is it because of the country elements of the song? I'm not really sure but I found myself kinda stanning. NMIXX won! I really like the production here and I'd argue it's the biggest asset of the song. We don't really hear this kind of country-meets-K-Pop production very often. It definitely makes the song stand out from the pack.

The song isn't perfect, true. The middle 8 is a huge ass mess. The mediocre rapping? Lily's high note that doesn't sound very clean to me and also sounds out of place? Delete all of that. But the rest of the song is a marvel to these ears and I hope NMIXX continues experimenting with their sound going forward, whether the end result is good or bad. We need more of that in K-Pop!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@KimLippington (1): "I can't explain it; I just have visceral hatred for that chorus. And that fuckass fiddle! Awful!" [Slicey: Ok, I will not attack you because you now stan NMIXX Know About Me hehe~]

@roblognick (4): "Sounds like a Eurovision song. That wouldn't be a diss in any other scenario, except this." [Slicey: We got another Eurovision drag FFFFFFF!]

@Salami (4): "It's different so it gets points for that. But who is an NMIXX fan? Who is their audience? What is their sound? A truly strange group." [Slicey: Me! I am the audience, heaux!]

@aux (5): "I adore NMIXX but this song does nothing for me."

@mika (5): "Ok the chorus is something, but the rest..."

@savilizabeths (7): "It doesn't quite reach the heights I expected based on the hype but it does have moments of greatness. Some things just feel a bit disconnected and I don't really like the chorus very much." [Slicey: The chorus was the last thing to grow on me honestly.]

@Vixen (7): "I love girls who can SING. ( Just wish the songs were a bit better ddd )"

@askew (7.5): "Seems fun on paper, but it feels like they pulled their punches somewhere along the line. That wet noodle vocal run, like what."

@boom bazooka joe (7.5): "Some of the production sounds a bit tacky tbh, but it manages to all work in this goofy way. Lily doing the most as usual." [Slicey: You explained the song perfectly FFFFFF! Slay!]

@eliminathan (8): "It's no Cool (Your Rainbow) but hey I'll take a second not terrible song from NMIXX."

@soratami (8): "The way the R section of the playlist would literally be all tens if it weren’t for this. I mean, I guess it’s still a fun little yeehaw moment of whatever, good for them." [Slicey: And now Lisa's Rockstar is the only R song remaining! When it's right, it's right!]

@Joli Chat (8.75): "anxiety up to the fucking roof waiting for the inevitable “NMIXX CHANGE UP!” like a soldier with ptsd omg, so glad that never happened and the way this is like their best song here and didn’t have that acoustic display of terrorism in it just can’t be a coincidence." [Slicey: I truly think if they added an "NMIXX change up" section, it would be overkill tbh. The fiddle-filled section is enough change up!]

@Crisp X (9): "Lindsey Stirling found on Aliexpress shopping for her next cosplay"

@Sprockrooster (10): "This is quite unique-sounding. A blend of genres and I am quite here for it."

@ysev (10): "One of the few hoedown inspired songs I can truly get down with. One of the best chorus melodies of the year."

The concept of time and space is so warped right now in my head because I could swear we rated this carne asada bop LAST YEAR....didn't we? Did we rate it now? Run For Roses was previewed that early?

Yes we rated Soñar last year FFFFFFFFF! It finished at number 53.

Run For Roses was first performed on October 7, 2023.

While Soñar was released on December 4, 2023.

They are both from the Fe3O4: Break mini album, which was released on January 15, 2024.

Hate this reminder that the excellent bops that are Retro Romance, Rooftop and Run Away all got eliminated way too early. Run For Roses is alright, but it outlasting all of those by a decent margin... uhh ok sure.

Retro Romance out at number 94. Run Away out at number 87. Pleasure Shop out at number 71. And now, Pineapple Slice is out at number 62. That leaves September with just one song remaining: Loossemble's TTYL. Flop month! But for now, let's focus on Baekhyun's Pineapple Slice.

Pineapple Slice is the lead single of Baekhyun's fourth (and first post-SM) Korean mini album, Hello, World. It was composed Eljay, Shakka Philip, TMM, Forever Noh and Dom Rivinius, with Park Tae-won and Shakka Philip handling the lyrics. Pineapple Slice peaked at number 69 on the Circle Digital Chart... that number... right.

I've said this before but lemme repeat myself: I'm so mad that my fave D.O. doesn't have the same taste level as Baekhyun. I'm far... faaaaar from being a Baekhyun fan but even I can admit that his singles are just miles above the quality of his fellow EXO members. He just gets pop music, doesn't he? From Candy to Bambi and now, Pineapple Slice, which is easily his best song yet, yeah, Baekhyun is kind of a genius. Wow, look at me waxing poetic about Baek facken Hyun. Are you proud of me, @boom bazooka joe unnie?

Baekhyun has already proven he has the range for R&B when he released Bambi back in 2021 - much to my dismay because ugh, imagine D.O. singing that song instead HSAGFJGSDF - so it's no surprise that he's excelled once again in another R&B effort in Pineapple Slice. But while Bambi is more on the ""baby-making R&B"" category, Pineapple Slice is a lot more modern and dynamic. The dramatic synthy production is a stunner. And yeah, Baekhyun sounds really good here too but that's to be expected. Do I wish he went the extra mile with the high notes during the middle 8 and the final chorus? Definitely yes, I think the dramatic production deserved more dramatic vocals. He did that on Bambi so I don't know why he kinda held himself back here. But overall, his vocals are still topnotch so don't attack me @boom bazooka joe and his fellow Little Bacons!

There's this notion that once an artist leaves SM Entertainment, their material goes to shit. I mean, I still see that getting parroted here and on stan Twitter by SM shooters. I think for some cases, that can be true to a certain degree. But I'd like to say that's really not the case anymore. Baekhyun and... delusional take, I know, Onew, are proof that it's actually possible to even improve your material post-SM. I really hope Baekhyun continues to hit more artistic peaks now that he's free. I'm rooting for you... I mean that.

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@mika (3): "Not my genre"

@love choerry motion (5): "This must have been a slow month, what a boring song" [Slicey: FFFFFFF, well the rate results agree with you, sister!!]

@ThisIsRogue (7): "Where were the pineapples in the MV though?" [Slicey: Asking the #real questions!]

@clowezra (8): "Rate discovery for me, this is divine."

@Crisp X (8): "Who is this DIVA"

@roblognick (8): "Quite partial to a bit of Baekhyun and his dark image."

@savilizabeths (8): "I knew there was a reason I used to lowkey stan Baekhyun"

@Vixen (8.5): "King keeping that baby gravy SWEET - kidding, don't put that in the commentary or you will be hearing from my lawyers x" [Slicey: You know I would never remove a commentary this good, unnie! Kii!!]

@askew (9.25): "Is he singing about his cum" [Slicey: Right.....]

@boom bazooka joe (11): "Baekhyun is the best vocalist in this rate, and he came back from the military with a vengeance on this one. A PERFECT song. Sexy, smooth, ominous, production slaps, music video eats, vocals deliver -- he's the GOAT for a reason."
