I knew right from the moment this song was released that it would flop spectacularly in the #KSOTY Rate (I didn't even think it would qualify, bye) but ugh, that doesn't make this elimination any less painful. I'm so sorry, my dear Cheeky Icy Thang by STAYC, my little misunderstood masterpiece. It's time to let you go now... forever!

Cheeky Icy Thang is the lead single of STAYC's first full-length album, Metamorphic. It was composed by Black Eyed Pilseung (B.E.P), Flyt, with lyrics written by Black Eyed Pilseung (B.E.P), Illson, On2pop, Jeong Ha-ri (153/Joombas), Jung Na-gyeong (153/Joombas), Jiggy (153/Joombas). Cheeky Icy Thang kind of flopped real bad, peaking only at number 118 on the Circle Digital Chart, making it the group's lowest charting single since their debut song, So Bad. GPT and Bebe have even lower peaks but shhhh, let's not talk about those for now, kii! It did win one music show trophy from Music Bank which, yay, let's celebrate that!

I don't even know if I wanna wax poetic about this song here because y'all nasty asses don't deserve it. But STAYC deserves it. Cheeky Icy Thang deserves it. So lemme at least try. I think Cheeky Icy Thang is one of the very best songs of 2024 and I'm not just saying that to be contrarian. I genuinely think it's one of the most interesting, thought-provoking packages of the year. And I just have to applaud STAYC for believing in this song so much that they chose it as the title track when they could have easily played it safe... like many other groups, oop. I mean, STAYC were doing just fine releasing... okay singles like Teddy Bear and Bubble. You know, public-friendly songs that are catchy and simple and SUCCESSFUL but I guess one day something just snapped in them and they realized, "fuck it, we can do so much better than this." Ugh, we stan True Believers of Quirky and Inaccessible Pop Music!

The instrumental of Cheeky Icy Thang is really like crack to me. Such rich, playful and dynamic production! This is Black Eyed Pilseung's best production in a while and it's such a great reminder of what they're still capable of. And as per usual, the STAYC girls deliver not only great but also compelling and attitude-filled vocals. They don't really do high notes here unfortunately but they compensated with just how believable they are delivering these frankly stupid lyrics FFFFFFF! And they still sound so cool! Your commitment has not gone unnoticed, mothers!

To be honest, I do get it. I really get why Cheeky Icy Thang failed to resonate with more people. It's not as catchy as RUN2U which it's so clearly emulating. The lack of a middle 8 and a final chorus is bothersome too, like Black Eyed Pilseung decided to pander a little too much to the TikTok-obsessed attention-deficient girlies. But I don't know you guys; something about Cheeky Icy Thang just works for me. I just find it so audacious and so interesting that I'm frankly more than okay to not mind its shortfalls. Whenever that outro comes on, my brain just turns into mush, performs somersaults and makes me believe that K-pop will never die. And I look forward to more songs that could challenge the confines of music like Cheeky Icy Thang.

Okay, now that I've said my piece, I'm allowing you to talk shit about my baby Cheeky Icy Thang.

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@Vixen (4.5): "STAYC will, I think, remain a group I will only get behind, like, 30% of the time? I know this is such an unpopular opinion, but they have so many misses for me dddd. This is another one of them. On my first listen, I wasn't even sure if I heard a chorus? It became clearer on following listens, but it all just blurs together and not in the right way. Production itself is good, but everything melody-wise feels so...flat and dull? Where's the energy?"

@eliminathan (5): "RUN2U and GFRIEND's Apple had a collab but they missed the mark."

@Macsun (5): "ughhh!"

@Salami (5): "It sounds like they're trying to do Run 2 U again but it's nowhere near as good."

@Serg. (5): "Every great group has that one single nobody likes" [Slicey: You're right, I don't like this. I LOVE AND WORSHIP IT!!]

@KimLippington (5.5): "It was bad for them... it was really bad for them... and yes! I was liking the shady post towards them…" [Slicey: This betrayal... I'll never forget this, unnie.]

@aux (6): "RUN2U rotten nachos found reheated."

@BEST FICTION (7.75): "This was for the arts, not the charts."

@mika (8): "Shame the rest of the album isn't that style"

@savilizabeths (8): "They really did something with this one. I don't know what it was, but it was definitely something (complimentary)." [Slicey: Exactly! You get it, unnie!]

@boom bazooka joe (8.5): "Musically, "Cheeky Icy Thang" is the closest STAYC has gotten to recapturing the magic of RUN2U -- shame about the dumb lyrics and some of the vocal production."

@clowezra (8.5): "Absolutely HATED this on release day, but listening to it pissed as a fart with my mates took it to joke status and then suddenly became a bop?? Alien ass tune and I love it." [Slicey: Thank you for getting into Team Talent in time, unnie!]

@eccentricsimply (8.5): "I know people rate this one lower than most of their other releases, but I thought it was delightfully quirky!" [Slicey: I know I could trust an aespa enjoyer who knows what an interesting production is!]

@love choerry motion (9): "Idk it's for the younger girlies that still know how to have fun, if you don't get it you're probably a Forehead Fiery Nothing!"

@roblognick (9): "LOVE STAYC! If you pay too much attention to what they're singing and the way they sing it, it falls a apart a bit."

@codecat (9.25): "I'm COOL as ICE nanana WHISKEY nanana DILDO.......for the arts ONLY." [Slicey: You didn't give this a 10??? Ok, this one hurt!!]

@soratami (10): "They’re bringing back truly quirky, off-kilter Gen 2 K-Pop here, and sadly the girls who think the genre began with BTS and BLACKPINK simply don't get it." [Slicey: I'll ignore the BLACKPINK stray because yath, exactly!]

@ultraviolet (10): "If you don’t feel goosebumps during Isa’s part on the last chorus then you’re just not getting the song I fear."

@ysev (10): "Cheecky Icy Thang... how decadent. It's so good... it makes the thang all cheeky and icy and it's just good."

I’m a fool, this would without a doubt get a 10 from me now! I’m now so obsessed with it that it’s helped me fall for Bubble and Beautiful Monster out of nowhere oop. But I do get how divisive it is, she’s a weird tune and it took ages to finally sink in.

[Slicey: I'll ignore the BLACKPINK stray because yath, exactly!]

Honestly it wasn't even a BLACKPINK (or BTS) stray. I just mentioned them because they're the two biggest Gen 3 groups and got a ton of people into K-Pop, people who, unless they went out of their way to also check some older groups etc, just wouldn't be familiar with how wackier (complimentary) K-Pop often was back in the day. I mean people in general, I know pretty much everyone on this forum is plenty familiar with older/more out-there K-Pop.
