Okay, I've heard y'all loud and clear. And so today, I will be granting (almost) everyone's wishes. We are finally saying goodbye to the heavily divisive Wife by (G)I-DLE.
Wife served as the pre-release single for (G)I-DLE's second full album, 2. It was composed by member Soyeon, Pop Time, Daily and Likey, with lyrics entirely written by Soyeon. Wife was a certified hit, peaking at number 11 on the Circle Digital Chart. It would go on and rank 97 on the year-end chart.
Hmmmm, you know what, maybe I did overscore this one. Now that I'm realizing it defeated several of my faves, I'm feeling a little regretful for giving it such a high score, kii! No but half jokes aside, I think Wife is another great entry to (G)I-DLE's growing list of iconique troll bops. It might not be as perfect as 2023's Queencard... well, literally nothing's gonna match that queen... but Wife is still very fun, very catchy, very unserious but also serious at the same time.
I would normally scoff at that runtime (I mean, it just barely scraped the 2:00 mark) but for some reason, Wife's very short runtime doesn't bother me at all. The fact that it made quite the memorable and bold statement in that time should be commended. Like, yes, kweens of efficiency! The production is robust, the girls' vocals and raps are razor-sharp (girls, even Shuhua!), the message is communicated properly. Not much to complain about, really.
With that said, I do wanna see (G)I-DLE present something new for their next comebacks. Not that I don't support their important social critiques through their music. I just think they have shown enough for now (Tomboy, Nxde, Queencard, Wife) and, you know, maybe it's time for something a little different. Or maybe they can return to the original sound that made them famous (see HANN or HWAA)! I would love that too. Let's just anticipate what they have in store for us whenever they make their next comeback.
THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@clowezra (0): "The worst song in the rate and yet another reminder of just how piss poor their material can be. They’re talented so I can sort of get their success at times but it’s songs like this where I have to wonder like…what’s the actual point. Retire."
@Vixen (4.5): "They're the new Mamamoo without half of the vocal chops, and no I won't take any questions!!!" [Slicey: Hmmmm, I don't disagree but (G)I-DLE seems cooler to me for some reason DHMASGDKJSHAG!!]
@codecat (7.75): "This needs to be registered to the Library of Congress ASAP"
@mika (8): "I really need to dive in their discography, this is great" [Slicey: I think you should! Tell us your fave (G)I-DLE songs after you're done!]
@savilizabeths (8.5): "My sister probably wishes Soyeon never put pen to paper on this one because she had to hear my partner and I sing it multiple times a day for like two months."
@eccentricsimply (9): "More of this, less of Super Lady. Gidle is at their best when they don't take themselves too seriously." [Slicey: Kiii, the rate results don't seem to agree with you, bestie...]
@Salami (9): "No doubt this won't do very well because these stupid songs never seem to last long, but it's one of the few from last year I had on repeat."
@Serg. (9): "Honestly video of the year at least from me you don't see RESCENE inspiring anyone to wear Teal bobs around Korea?" [Slicey: Now why are you attacking my daughters RESCENE out of nowhere???]
@boom bazooka joe (10): "I can't really explain why I love this song so much but I COOK CREAM SOUP TASTE IS COCO LOCO! WANT ME YOUR WIFE BUT SHIT IS MM MM MM! I CLEAN YOUR ROOM ITS SO TWINKLE TWINKLE! WANT ME YOUR WIFE BUT SHIT IS MM MM MM!"
@Crisp X (10): "When tradwives learn about this and it becomes a far right anthem then what"[Slicey: U know... I can see this happening unfortunately AHDGJGSFJSDA!!]
@roblognick (10): "This is the type of batshit insane that I like."
@Salami (9): "No doubt this won't do very well because these stupid songs never seem to last long, but it's one of the few from last year I had on repeat."
An aespa song out just before the top 50? It's more likely than you think! This is their first of three rate entries, Armageddon.
Armageddon is the title track of aespa's first full-length album. It was composed by Ejae, Sumin, Waker (153/Joombas) and No Identity, with lyrics written by Bang Hye-hyun. As with other aespa singles, Armageddon was also a mammoth hit, peaking at number 4 on the weekly, number 4 on the monthly and number 29 on the year-end Circle Digital Chart. It also won a total four music trophies.
Outside of, like, irrelevants like Forever and Regret of the Times, I actually think Armageddon is my least favourite Korean aespa single. It just didn't land for me. Even on my first listen, I was very confused how a song this unmemorable was chosen as the main single. Kinda like how I felt when I first listened to LE SSERAFIM's Easy too, although obviously, Armageddon is a much better song. I think getting Supernova just weeks before didn't help Armageddon's case too. While Supernova was breezy, Armageddon sounded so laboured.
And yes, laboured is how I'd exactly summarize Armageddon. There's an unease - a struggle, really - to it that I don't think I've ever felt or heard in any aespa single before. This is most evident during that chorus. And as many of you should know by now, 90% of the time, the chorus makes or breaks the song for me. I do wanna commend the girls for still making the song listenable and even enjoyable sometimes. Ningning's efforts in that middle 8 alone is reason enough for me to not totally dismiss Armageddon. I always got you, my sweetpea.
Okay, I'll stop here before I get MURDERED for speaking ill of an aespa song. Know that I gave VERY HIGH scores for Whiplash and Supernova hehehe~. Let's all anticipate aespa's upcoming comeback that should come out before the second quarter of 2025 ends.
THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@Joli Chat (5): "the bang chitty bang bang part is cute I guess!"[Slicey: That's the best part of the song by MILES.]
@Salami (5): "Their first real miss for me. It's just boring, I never thought I'd say that about an aespa song. I'll let them off with this one."[Slicey: Nawt us finally agreeing on something!]
@Vixen (6): "I do oddly really like the "Immagetitdone/Armageddon" wordplay, but I feel like there isn't much else to latch onto the song? Some parts of the verses in particular are very dull and flat. After something as catchy as 'Supernova', I can't help but be disappointed with this one. Even the bridge, in all its SM-esque-bridge glory, isn't quite exactly...hitting, yknow? Standard 6 where you sort of value the effort and everything, but it just doesn't quite work."[Slicey: The imma get it done/armageddon wordplay is genius, true. Shakespeare is shaking!]
@aux (7.5): "I can't lie, this is a bit of a miss for me. When you sandwich a single with "Supernova" and "Whiplash", that single better be incredible and this wasn't. It's still good but aespa have delivered far better."
@askew (8): "I really thought we were getting their 'Army of Me' when the teaser dropped ffff."
@mika (8): "Oh wow I made a mistake with supernova, 8 is enough"[Slicey: Byeee!]
@roblognick (8): "I like it, but I feel it's quite similar to other songs of theirs that I prefer."
@savilizabeths (8.5): "There was something about aespa in 2024, wasn't there? While this is my least favourite of their main efforts, and took a few tries to get into, it absolutely hits. They deserve every piece of praise heaped upon them."[Slicey: They owned 2024, honestly, truly.]
@boom bazooka joe (10): "MV of the year. Group of the year. Song of the year contender. (Now SM just give them a properly good album.)"
@clowezra (10): "Consistently surprised to see ambivalence towards this almighty cuntress banger?? It’s so epic and elevated, the whole package with the insane choreography and video? People need to wise up."[Slicey: If I included choreography and video in my score, then Armageddon would get a higher score... but I don't really do that for #KSOTY hehe~]
@codecat (10): "Insane bass, insane part switches...an insane track on an insane aespa year! No notes."
@eccentricsimply (10): "A song that got a bit eaten up by the insanity of Supernova and Whiplash but it's still up there for me among the best aespa has released ddddd The combination of how good the choreo is as well as the insane music video also added to the song a Lot."
