It's time for our first NewJeans cut and sadly, it's poor Bubble Gum getting the axe.
Bubble Gum is the b-side of NewJeans' first single of 2024, How Sweet. It was released a month before How Sweet. Bubble Gum was written and composed by 250, Oscar Bell and Sophie Simmons. And as with any NewJeans song, really, Bubble Gum turned out to be a monster hit as well. It peaked at number 3 on the weekly and monthly Circle Digital Chart and it would end up as the thirty third biggest song of 2024.
This might be a reach to some of you but I would actually classify Bubble Gum as kinda different from the usual NewJeans songs. Like, it definitely sounds nothing like their biggest hits like Super Shy or Hybe Boy. It's closer to Ditto but they don't exactly sound alike too. But it still certainly sounds like a NewJeans song which I really like. I love acts with a recognizable quality to their sound, hehe~.
Bubble Gum sees the girls opt for something lighter, breezier and more understated. Even the vocals are very whispery with lots and lots of falsettos (those yummy background vocals, AHHHHH!). I feel like this might be a reason why some people would call Bubble Gum boring or even below NewJeans' usual standards. I get it but also I kinda not? I'll always be a believer of artists that try something different to hopefully add something new to their established sound. And I feel that's exactly what NewJeans sought to do with Bubble Gum, and what they achieved too.
I wanna be pissed that a song this good is already getting eliminated but you know what? I didn't even expect these NewJeans songs to reach the top 50 so... uh, I guess I'll just keep my mouth shut and celebrate that all their three songs were better received that anticipated. See when you do talentry!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@Salami (4): "Didn't know they put music out last year. May as well have not bothered if this is what it sounds like. At least it's different to what they usually do."
@Joli Chat (6): "Kinda done with the whole retro aesthetic, can they try something else? Something new? Something I can hold on to? I feel like I’m watching the intro from ALF lmao." [Slicey: @NewJeans please don't listen to this heaux!!]
@Crisp X (6.5): "Not their best"
@mika (7): "This is still my favorite band"
@YRSHKD (7.25): "While I almost consider myself as a Tokki, I really didn't vibe with this song from its release. It's still in their standards though."
@aux (8): "I love me some bubble gum."
@ysev (8): "This right after the Bébe Yana techno song... LOL" [Slicey: FFFFFFFF why did remind me of the "when you go to the wrong club" meme...]
@boom bazooka joe (8.5): "Nothing NewJeans released in 2024 reaches the absolute stratospheric heights of Super Shy, ETA, or Ditto, but they remained consistently great, even despite all the hell they've been through this year. I think this is my favorite of theirs in the rate." [Slicey: FFFFFF the rate results are not in line with your taste this year, bestiana]
@savilizabeths (8.5): "My favourite track from NewJeans 2024 output. It's so soft and pretty, I feel like I'm floating in the clouds when I hear it. I thought I was going to rate it a little lower until I relistened and completely ascended."
@clowezra (10): "Lush instant summer classique." [Slicey: PERFECT DESCRIPTION! I wanna hear this getting blasted while I swim during summer!!]
@eccentricsimply (10): "So beautiful. Reminiscent of Ditto, which is the song that turned me into a Jeanzer."
@Vixen (10): "Lowkey this is one of their better songs but I'm not sure if K-Pop stans are ready for this conversation. I feel like they're too attached to their first string of singles. That chorus EATS. The chords are very simple but so catchy. Like everything about this is so delicious and tasty, yum x" [Slicey: They are NOT ready, unnie!!]
