It's time for our first NewJeans cut and sadly, it's poor Bubble Gum getting the axe.

Bubble Gum is the b-side of NewJeans' first single of 2024, How Sweet. It was released a month before How Sweet. Bubble Gum was written and composed by 250, Oscar Bell and Sophie Simmons. And as with any NewJeans song, really, Bubble Gum turned out to be a monster hit as well. It peaked at number 3 on the weekly and monthly Circle Digital Chart and it would end up as the thirty third biggest song of 2024.

This might be a reach to some of you but I would actually classify Bubble Gum as kinda different from the usual NewJeans songs. Like, it definitely sounds nothing like their biggest hits like Super Shy or Hybe Boy. It's closer to Ditto but they don't exactly sound alike too. But it still certainly sounds like a NewJeans song which I really like. I love acts with a recognizable quality to their sound, hehe~.

Bubble Gum sees the girls opt for something lighter, breezier and more understated. Even the vocals are very whispery with lots and lots of falsettos (those yummy background vocals, AHHHHH!). I feel like this might be a reason why some people would call Bubble Gum boring or even below NewJeans' usual standards. I get it but also I kinda not? I'll always be a believer of artists that try something different to hopefully add something new to their established sound. And I feel that's exactly what NewJeans sought to do with Bubble Gum, and what they achieved too.

I wanna be pissed that a song this good is already getting eliminated but you know what? I didn't even expect these NewJeans songs to reach the top 50 so... uh, I guess I'll just keep my mouth shut and celebrate that all their three songs were better received that anticipated. See when you do talentry!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@Salami (4): "Didn't know they put music out last year. May as well have not bothered if this is what it sounds like. At least it's different to what they usually do."

@Joli Chat (6): "Kinda done with the whole retro aesthetic, can they try something else? Something new? Something I can hold on to? I feel like I’m watching the intro from ALF lmao." [Slicey: @NewJeans please don't listen to this heaux!!]

@Crisp X (6.5): "Not their best"

@mika (7): "This is still my favorite band"

@YRSHKD (7.25): "While I almost consider myself as a Tokki, I really didn't vibe with this song from its release. It's still in their standards though."

@aux (8): "I love me some bubble gum."

@ysev (8): "This right after the Bébe Yana techno song... LOL" [Slicey: FFFFFFFF why did remind me of the "when you go to the wrong club" meme...]

@boom bazooka joe (8.5): "Nothing NewJeans released in 2024 reaches the absolute stratospheric heights of Super Shy, ETA, or Ditto, but they remained consistently great, even despite all the hell they've been through this year. I think this is my favorite of theirs in the rate." [Slicey: FFFFFF the rate results are not in line with your taste this year, bestiana]

@savilizabeths (8.5): "My favourite track from NewJeans 2024 output. It's so soft and pretty, I feel like I'm floating in the clouds when I hear it. I thought I was going to rate it a little lower until I relistened and completely ascended."

@clowezra (10): "Lush instant summer classique." [Slicey: PERFECT DESCRIPTION! I wanna hear this getting blasted while I swim during summer!!]

@eccentricsimply (10): "So beautiful. Reminiscent of Ditto, which is the song that turned me into a Jeanzer."

@Vixen (10): "Lowkey this is one of their better songs but I'm not sure if K-Pop stans are ready for this conversation. I feel like they're too attached to their first string of singles. That chorus EATS. The chords are very simple but so catchy. Like everything about this is so delicious and tasty, yum x" [Slicey: They are NOT ready, unnie!!]

I thought this was their most K-Popjustice coded song in the rate so I’m shocked! And aye it is such a summer vibe, can’t picture me being poolside without it again. It’s flawless, those whooshing synths especially, whewww

They’re legit the perfect group, pretty much every song they’ve put out has been a k-pop defining moment for me…so of course this legal battle is going on, can’t be arsed.

legal battle
Right, I didn’t wanna mention this in my write-up because it really breaks my heart.

But lemme just say, if you’re someone who cheers on these abusive companies like HYBE, saying shit like, “NewJeans are so dumb, why did they think they’d win against HYBE? Stick to the contracts!!!1” I automatically know and assume you’re a bad person. I’ve seen a few here of people like that here on K-Popjustice (that one LE SSERAFIM stan…..) and it never fails to annoy me.

I stood with TVXQ!, KARA, LOONA and Fifty Fifty when they went up against their shitty companies. And I’d do the same for NewJeans.

Period, didn’t realise how much of a bubble we’re in here, like I am genuinely knocked sick at the comments I’ve seen elsewhere on other social media platforms defending the label over the girls. I tried to defend them and talk about women’s rights and I got shat on in seconds, really surprised me.

Bad people is definitely the term for it! Netizens need to get a grip.

Reddit in particular is a cesspool of stupidity. Even the most neutral "well I don't think we should call teenager girls spoiled bitches for not wanting to be exploited" gets downvoted into oblivion. It's so ridiculous, HYBE truly succeeded at turning kpop stans into capitalist bootlickers - same people who will, in the next breath, talk about how [insert any other company here but mostly SM] is the True Evil of Kpop and how those Dumb Asians cannot focus on the market inside their own countries because the United States is soooooooooooo much better!!!

Anyway, rant over dddd I fucking hate HYBE and HYBE stans and I'm not going to pretend they didn't sour some HYBE groups to me in this process.

The two-year top 20 run of Kwon Eunbi ends today as her only rate entry, Sabotage, falls at number 44. All good things come to an end, etc.

Sabotage is the title track of Kwon Eunbi's second single album. It was written and composed by JJean, NODAY, Youra (Full8loom) and bay (153/Joombas). Sabotage didn't enter the main Circle Digital Chart but it did peak at number 21 on the component Download Chart.

It feels weird for me to not be obsessed with a Kwon Eunbi single... but that's exactly what happened with Sabotage. It's coming from the heels of her iconique singles run of Glitch, Underwater and The Flash and yeah, my expectations were sky high. Suffice to say, Sabotage didn't meet them. And I think it's funny because production-wise, I think Sabotage sounds right at home with Eunbi's holy trinity. It's still rooted in EDM, it's still giving 2nd gen extravaganza. And yet! The song falters. Why is that?

I'm sorry to say but it's the kween herself, Miss Kwon Eunbi, that failed the song. I don't know who she pissed off but she sounds... not very good on Sabotage. Like, I can't believe some of the vocals here passed several executives of Woollim Entertainment. Someone's definitely... wait for it... sabotaging my sister! No but really, what is up with the vocals? Sure, Eunbi's known for her larger-than-life, kinda shrill vocals (to me, she's the K-Pop equivalent of the Where Have You Been? girlie) but somehow, they didn't work on Sabotage. Whenever that chorus hits, I can feel my poor eardrums hold on for dear life. I do have to say I really like the high notes she does in the middle 8. I wanted more of those, damn it!

Still, I can't really deny the massive boppery of Sabotage so I ended up still giving it a decent-ish score. Even if I hate the way Eunbi sings the chorus, I can't lie, it's still constantly stuck in my head. Does it give me headaches? Sure, but headaches can't stop me from bopping. I thought that has been established by now.

Kwon Eunbi very recently released her new single, Hello Stranger, and thankfully it's a lot more palatable to these ears. Don't forget to vote for it in our monthly charts! It's the only chart that the song can enter so don't deny this achievement from Miss Kwon!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@mika (1): "I hate whistling"

@Crisp X (5.5): "That whistling melody is diabolical and kinda ruins this. Bring back Glitch!" [Slicey: FFFFFFFFFF the whistling is so fun though!!]

@savilizabeths (6): "This queen continues to release high quality bops and I continue to feel nothing towards them. It's not you, Eunbi, it's me." [Slicey: But have you tried her new single, Hello Stranger, unnie?]

@eliminathan (7): "The real sabotage was giving Kwon Eunbi a good song knowing I won't give her higher than an 7."

@Joli Chat (7): "Kinda wild an ex-member of iz*one has a song called sabotage, self aware queen!" [Slicey: You did NAWTTT, omfg??]

@boom bazooka joe (7.5): "I need another serve as strong as Glitch from her, but this is cute!"

@soratami (8): "Kwon Eunbi is highkey one of the most overrated artists on the forum. This is good, like her stuff tends to be, but I have yet to hear something truly excellent from her." [Slicey: Eauxxx the claws are out from Mx. Sour Tummy!]

@clowezra (8.5): "Adore her but kind of brushed this off on release day, not a clue why as it’s properly hitting now! That Hilary Duff Sparks whistle hook is such a dumb/bizarre ripoff that it ends up being camp."

@Ana Raquel (9): "The beginning of it is SOOOOOO 2011 electropop I love it!!! The whistles made me lower a point, though"

@codecat (10): "This song makes me wanna open an XXL can of beer by smashing it with a rock and take off on my Harley into the sunset...we love Kwon Eunbi and the person who saved this! I don't even wanna think of what's gonna happen now that Woolim is on life support!!! SM do something!!! HYBE stay away!!!" [Slicey: The way Woollim didn't even give her at least three songs on her latest comeback.... I fear the end is near oh my god...]

@ysev (10): "You know how Korea loves to give beloved artist's titles? Eunboob deserves "The Nation's DIVA""

@love choerry motion (10): "It would be criminal for this SMASH to not be in the rate, I'm glad I was able to right this wrong." [Slicey: I'm so sorry I didn't vibe with your supersubmissions this year, bestie. I will come back with a more mature image...]

@savilizabeths (6): "This queen continues to release high quality bops and I continue to feel nothing towards them. It's not you, Eunbi, it's me." [Slicey: But have you tried her new single, Hello Stranger, unnie?]

I have! It unfortunately does fall into the same pattern as her previous material for me. Objectively good but a disconnect for me. However, I did catch her on MCOUNTDOWN and she killed it so I'll give her her flowers!
