#KS✿TY2024: The K-Pop Song of the Year 2024 Rate | #71: "completely faceless and could literally be sung by anyone or an AI bot at this point"

If Twice managed to course correct after 2 to 3 meh albums, im sure Red Velvet can manage it as well, in fact they already did with Cosmic, I know that’s right.

Also Mr. Vampire being out this early doesn’t make sense with my fantasy and everything I stand for. Everybody clowned them for doing the same song over and over and they have one that is unique and it could not even make the top half of rate? Worms, jail and all the other catchphrases.

From one JYP girl group to another. Tonight, we say goodbye to NMIXX's first of three rate entries, Boom.

Boom is a song taken from NMIXX's second mini album, Fe3O4: Break. It was composed by Ryan S. Jhun, Jack Brady, Jordan Roman and Austin Wolfe with lyrics written by Oh Hyun-seon (Lalala Studio), Jang Da-in (Artiffect), Lee Seu-ran and Yu Ga-yeong (Artiffect). Boom did not enter the main Circle Digital Chart but it did appear at number 62 on the component Download Chart.

The Fe3O4: Break mini album was definitely the mini album that made the K-Popjustice subforum finally take NMIXX seriously. So it is not a shock to me that two of its album tracks made their way to this rate. I will say... I didn't expect Boom to be one of two to make it... especially over Passionfruit which I thought was everyone's favourite album track from the mini album. That one even ranked 10th in the KPopjustice Charts - January 2024 Edition. So colour me very surprised when @enjoy picked Boom instead.

Boom, to me, is fine. It's a song that, I feel like, needed more time in the oven. There are parts of it that I really like, for example, the rapped verses (me? enjoying NMIXX rapping? the shock! the horror!) and the post-chorus (?). Oh, and of course, that sweet change-up 30 seconds before the song ends too. But the chorus though? Chop! It's giving heterosexual boy group music. And just to bring it back to that "NMIXX change-up" part, that one should've absolutely come earlier... like, after the first chorus even. It would've given major I Got A Boy vibes. In its current form, that section just screams "oh snap, the song kinda goes nowhere, let's add this one part to distract the audience."

Still, it's not a bad song. And I appreciate that it tries to be different even if I think it's not as successful as it should be. So it gets points for that. Anyway, please anticipate NMIXX's upcoming new mini album, Fe3O4: Forward, to be released on March 17th. You can now listen to its EXCELLENT pre-release single, High Horse, on your favourite streaming platforms!

THE JURY'S THOUGHTS:
@Salami (2): "Listening to this song hasn't benefitted my life in any way. JYP already has a girl group doing annoying noisy songs, why is another one being forced on us?" [Slicey: FFFFFFF this isn't even noisy!! What are you on, bestie!!]

@eliminathan (3.5): "The song plods along for 2.5 minutes then desperately tries to switch it up to a better sound. Too little too late I fear!"

@Joli Chat (6): "It sounds like them!" [Slicey: SCREAM!]

@aux (6.5): "Produced by Austin Wolfe? Umm..." [Slicey: Wait, do we hate that man? Lemme know, sister!!]

@Crisp X (6.5): "The beat change is such a tease... JYP when I catch you"

@savilizabeths (6.5): "I genuinely cannot tell if I like this or not, I'm so confused."

@boom bazooka joe (7): "I feel like sometimes the "NMIXX" switch ups are the things that absolutely ruin their songs, but the outro to this is what elevates it to almost being a great song." [Slicey: Now look at you giving this a decent score for that outro alone! Iconique!]

@Vixen (7): "The non-rap parts are quite nice. The build-up and switch-up to the outro (but not the outro itself if that makes sense) are kinda my favorite parts. It's hard to rate this, there are parts that I like, others that I don't quite like as much and grate on me more than I would like. I think a 7 is fair."

@clowezra (7.5): "A rate discovery for me, a gag!"

@leedlelee... (8): "This could have been the title track…" [Slicey: Oh ABSOLUTELY NAWT IN MY WATCH!]

@love choerry motion (10): "The NMIXX formula at its PEAK! I heard it in the background of an oomf's Twitch stream and had him turn it up a bit...been obsessed since. I think this is one of the first changeup's that I don't have a clear, favorite part of, so they get an A++ from me!"

@mika (10): "Really hesitated for that 11, for the last 30 seconds alone"

@ysev (10): "This is so cool. The switch at the end sounds like a modern take on YG party choruses at the end of many of their groups' title tracks. The mini album is also one of the bests of the year. Some genuinely innovative songs, BOOM especially. NMIXX the heiresses of f(x)? You heard it here first." [Slicey: YATHHH, start a discussion with that last minute hot take, sistah!]

NMIXX is a funny case for me. As someone who enjoyed their very out there initial releases a lot, I don't understand why JYPE couldn't have just committed to it. Everything they've released since, bar DASH which is truly exceptional, has just been so... forgettable? I'd rather listen to popcorn and zero coke anyday of the week over their other stuff, especially the dreadful See That?

Kpop is interesting though because they are a very talented group weighed down by a material that can be a bit pedestrian at times but if they were less talented they'd get dragged for it as well. Ultimately, the grand powers of the kpop industry truly lie with the people in charge of the A&R.
