This can't be real... is it? Gashina gives me war flashbacks with the tropical pop sound and the anti drop chorus whereas Eclipse literally hasn't aged a single day. No offense to Sunmi, but she has so many better songs.

Viola is the lead single of Yves' second mini album, I Did. Like her previous single, Loop, Viola was also written and composed by millic and IOAH. Unfortunately, Viola didn't enter the main Circle Digital Chart; it didn't even enter the component Download Chart. It did reach number 1 on Genius Korea's Daily K-Pop Chart which, uh, is not nothing, I guess! Kween of the arts and not the charts!
Viola continues Yves' ascent to K-indie diva territory which she established with her debut single, Loop. Unlike Loop though, which had the very memorable but ultimately divisive Lil Cherry cameo, Viola is all Yves. It proves that she can carry this kind of genre or sound on her own. My first impression of Viola wasn't very positive, to be honest. To me, it felt a little flat especially compared to the relative bombast of Loop. I mean, I know it's a bop but maybe I'm just looking for something more hard-hitting.
Of course, that opinion changed almost immediately when the "I just need some space... I just need some space... space... space..." lyrics got stuck in my brain for what felt like an eternity. If you know me, you'd know I would normally HATE a chorus this lazy and underwritten. But something about those lines just speak to me on almost a spiritual level, you know? They felt like a mantra somehow. Yes, I do need some space. Thank you, Yves, for speaking my mind!
But aside from that hook, the entire song also grew massively on me. It helps that the song is sung almost fully in English so I can sing along to it a bit more. I'm also weirdly obsessed with the way her vocals have been produced or distorted or whatever. @Vixen unnie is gonna hate me for saying this (just read her commentary below) but I actually think Yves doesn't exactly have the most memorable voice in K-Pop. To me, her vocals can be a bit too whispery and therefore, pretty generic. That's why I like that she and her producers experimented a bit more with her vocals on Viola. It gave her vocals some serious punch... and honestly, emotional resonance too. I feel like I'm listening to a robot from the future (highly complementary). So yeah, I want her to go even more overboard with the vocal distortion for her next single. Come for Grimes' whole gig, Yves unnie!
Korea seems to not be on board with Yves' music which is a shame and a loss for them. But I hope that doesn't bother her or force her to change her music. I think she needs to target the international market more aggressively now. Work with well-known producers outside of Korea, unnie! But also!! Don't forget to work with female Korean producers such as Sumin and Yaeji. It would be a dream for me if you collaborate with them!

Strategy is the title track of Twice's fourteenth mini album. It was composed by Earattack, Boy Matthews, Cleo Tighe and Lee Woo-hyun, with lyrics written by Boy Matthews, Cleo Tighe and Megan Pete (aka Megan Thee Stallion). Strategy kinda struggled on both domestic and international charts... which is crazy considering it involves two titans. It peaked at number 48 on the Billboard Global 200 Chart, number 112 on the Circle Digital Chart and number 3 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Chart.
Although I Got You is my favourite of the four Twice songs in this rate, I think we made the right decision making Strategy their last song standing. Compared to their other songs here, I think Strategy best showcases Twice's power. Strategy shows that despite Twice's huge discography, there are still genres and sounds that they can try and thrive in. I think production-wise, Strategy is miles above Twice's other recent singles. It's still rooted in retro which we all know is Twice's home turf. But it's not that kind of retro, if you know what I mean. It mixes retro with hip-hop elements... two things that I didn't think would work for Twice. But they surprisingly do both so well in Strategy. And I think Megan Thee Stallion's inclusion is what sealed the deal for that.
Speaking of Megan... whew, that is how you do a feature! Megan got the whole middle 8 for herself and she DEVOURED. Oh she did and more! I really thought Megan's Law was peak 2024 Megan moment but maybe Strategy Megan is actually it? When she goes "left, right, left right, do it to the beat," you best believe I had shivers. We love a commanding presence!
The Twice girlies held their own too, to be honest. Thankfully, they were wise to just let Megan do the rapping and just gave singing parts to Chaeyoung and Dahyun. Crisis averted!
