I don't think streaming playlists are too different from getting listed on radio stations. You basically have major record companies taking whoever owns those playlists to champagne lunches, just like with radio.
I agree it's not fair but that's capitalism.
Or record store stockists. If they didn't stock your song, tough luck.
I'm quite glad the old gatekeepers and hall monitors of the singles chart are either long gone, or largely ineffective now - Woolworths, MTV, NME, the Sun's Bizarre column, Cowell and ITV1, but also sad that they've been replaced by even more nebulous and invisible ones. Who even knows who's sitting with Spotify and promising them free trips for a high 40 in the New Music Friday position.
At least major labels chucking fifteen grand at Intermedia to plug their new singles at regional radio got me some snazzy second hand promo CDs turning up on eBay at the end of it.
