I don't think the song is that groundbreaking in isolation, but in terms of how safely Kylie has been marketed in recent years, something that is as chaotic and chopped and screwed as "Tension" does feel both refreshing and a little challenging. In the grander scheme of pop, we've all heard stuff like this, but in terms of Kylie's discography, particularly at this current time in her career, I think it's a decently bold step.
I've only dipped my toe into the leaks but there were definitely options that were probably far safer for her usual Radio 2 audience. So I'm actually impressed considering how gun shy a lot of her choices have been since Kiss Me Once.
