This is the most unenthusiastic i've ever been about a Kylie lead single (2000-).

Can we call this a 'buzz track'?!

All The Lovers is still 10/10 for me. And of the best pop songs of the past 5 years.

Good timing with this. I had this album on earlier tonight, and I wondered what the reaction to it among Kylie fans back then was. I've only been following her since "Fever" (and although I was just getting interested in music in '94, it's not like she was getting any US airplay).

Did the SAW fans jump ship en masse when they heard her new sound, or did most of them just go with it?

Back then, a lot of the SAW fans had long since gone and she was a bit of gay club diva, but KM94 just made her a lot more 'niche' for a while. She'd do bizarre things though, like appear in ultra cool magazines and have lots of remixes by cred DJs and then appear on The Vicar of Dibley. It was all very 'not sure what to do with itself'. But that was indicative of the whole deconstruction era. With Kylie, she never ever 'lost' fans they just tend to 'pass' on anything that's not quite 'Kylie' enough and then come back in droves when she delivers the goods.

A great sum up of the period Letuinmybackdoor!

I didn't like the '94 album photoshoot either. It was like photos for eyewear adverts. Did it even capture anyone's attention, and even more importantly, did anyone recognize Kylie in it? I wouldn't know how it was received back then though. Different times, different context etc.

But the only scenario worse than what we got as a cover for Kiss Me Once, would be a cover like that of Kylie Minogue '94. However, it's not such a big deal, Kylie is not an artist I'd admire for her choice of covers. While they are generally really good, they are not part of her spectacle for me. Would we care much for how iconic her pose on the Fever cover was if it wasn't matched with the hit record it represented, or would we just think it was too simple to work?

Kylie only has one truly brilliant album cover. Impossible Princess. The limited edition cover destroys entire discographies worth of covers.

I loved the TV advert for KM94 where she banged on top of the TV's. I'm not sure whether she lost fans after PWL or if they left before then, but she was more successful in 94/5 than she was in 91/2. I was so intrigued by Confide In Me, loved it from the minute I heard it. Which, bye the way, cost my dad nearly 300 quid. The only way I could reliably listen to it was to call the TV Hits hotline, which I did, repeatedly and for many, many nights in a row running up a huge bill with the premium rate calls, whilst he was none the wiser down the pub! I tried putting the phone receiver next to the mic on my cassette recorder and taping it, but didn't have much luck, so kept calling.

The whole Decon era was a strange one, she did so many random things that all remain iconic for me. I know I keep banging on about photography, but seriously, she has never looked as good, or been more experimental when it comes to imagery, let alone music. The Rankin shots for the album and The Kylie Bible and Stephane's IP shots I already mentioned. But then you had both Sky Magazine covers, The Face, ID, Ellen Von Unworth, Philip Treacy, Katie Grand, Simon Emmett.

Seriously, if you weren't a fan during that time and you aren't familiar with these peoples images, you should check them out. It's leagues ahead of what William bloody Baker has been churning out for almost a decade. I'm not saying he hasn't done some great stuff, and he has a lot of good ideas, but 9 times out of 10 he has no idea how to execute them.

Hmmm, that went off on a bit of a tangent, but I feel better now!

I googled Kylie Minogue Rankin and a photo of a nude fan with a huge tattoo of Kylie at the back of his leg came up. Is it the same fan that said Rankin took his picture? If so, great ass.

I had a gigantic poster of the KM94 cover on my wall for years - like bus stop advert sized. I can't even remember where I got it from.

From what I remember Kylie fans sort of looked at each other when Let's Get To It was released. It felt like a step back cobbled together album after Rhythm Of Love. A watery lead, a lukewarm chairman of the board cover, a duet with a bloke she'd never met or no one had ever heard of, a faux rave song that sounded like a 2 Unlimited cast off and finally Finer Feelings. The rest of the album felt like songs from Rhythm Of Love that weren't up to scratch. No World Without You and Too Much Of A Good Thing (even though here vocals were waaay too low in the mix) along with Finer Feelings, were the only things that marked any progression. By the time the greatest hits came around I was glad she'd left SAW. Another cover version with Celebration, a tepid throwback to Enjoy Yourself in What Kind Of Fool and the frankly baaad Where In The World.

The problem with Kylie back then is that her music hadn't grown up with her fans. I was 11-12 when she came out and by the time What Kind Of Fool came out I was in the Gay clubs listening to dance and rave. They moved too slowly. Keep On Pumpin It Up sounded like a joke. "oh is this what Kylie thinks rave and dance music sounded like". When Kylie Minogue dropped it felt like she'd picked the ball up again and caught up with her fanbase. Only for DeCon to fuck up some of the single releases and campaigns. I'll never understand why they put Where Is THe Feeling remixes on the back of Put Yourself In My Place and then released it as her third single? Lunacy!!!

So yeah she basically lost a good few fans between 91-93 and probably gained a bunch more in 94.

Everyone loved her back when Confide was released. It was her Miley moment.

The singles strategy from 94/95 era was very odd. Confide In Me was a big hit, followed up two months later by Put Yourself In My Place which is amazing but didn't do as well, and then a huge gap of 8 months before the next single Where Is The Feeling came out which was a totally odd re-version of an already pretty fantastic song. I like it but it took away the tune and uplifting vibe of the song and turned it into a dreamy, moody tune. The BIR Bish Bosh mix on the single was much better and improved on the album version and probably would have been a bigger chart hit had it been the main single. So, why was there such a long wait between singles 2 and 3?

Except Miley is probably the most polarizing figure in music right now? Not exactly the best example of a universally loved individual.

I think she was filming 'Streetfighter' so wasn't around to promote. Another 'duh' moment.
