Originally, What Do I Have To Do? was planned to be released after the single "Better the Devil You Know", but instead "Step Back in Time" was released and this was released as the third single on 21 January 1991.
The song peaked at number eleven in her native Australia. The song did however peak at number six in the United Kingdom, becoming a success there. The song was also a minor hit in France and The Netherlands.
'What Do I Have To Do? has been performed on most of Minogue's concert tours, including her Rhythm of Love Tour, Let's Get to It Tour and Intimate and Live Tour. The song has also been performed at the Showgirl: The Greatest Hits Tour and the Homecoming Tour, and has been most recently been performed at her Aphrodite World Tour.
The 1999 biographical book Girl Next Door identified this track as Kylie's favourite to perform live.

@mrdonut The wigs in the video are amazing
@Mikey1701 I could go on for days about why this incredible, but I wouldn't come close to doing it justice so let me say this: FUCKING MASTERPIECE.
@SloMover The song is a 10, the video is a 10, the single cover is a 10 - What Do I Have To Do? is quite possibly (still) Kylie's best single release to date.
@VivaForever Should be just as big in Kylie fandom as Devil and Shocked.
@LoveMachine Just perfect. From the "love you- love you"-chants, to the nonsensical samples in the radio edit to the video.
@tylerc904 So good. Another contender for the win.
@Pop Gaz Here it is my 11, my favorite ever Kylie song, its mature, its fun, the chorus explodes, the video’s just perfect (Kylie ironing!) its just an amazing song!
@DJHazey "LOVE YOU LOVE YOU" is literally chanted into my soul. The chorus works so well because the whooshing sound helps build into an utterly time-stopping rush that's created. The faint 'ahhhhs' in the background also help make this whole experience heavenly.
@AlmostFamous “What’s that sound?” “An ELEVEN” Just so euphoric and i get rushes every time I hear it, unlike Devil it has benefited from not being overplayed. Her and the backing vocalists sound phenomenal on this. The mix of happy and frustrated is such a powerful juxtaposition and the song translates that utter lust you have for somebody special in the early stages.
@gezza76 So Here’s my 11, drawing on Italo house and the rave culture of the early 90s but with a pop twist it’s just too glorious to resist. The sing a long chorus is pop euphoria and “just” manages to top the other songs in this rate.-11
@letuinmybackdoor Both single and album versions are perfect, I love the ‘wirlling’ sounds, the moment she became cool as fuck , just wonderful.
@SophiaSophia is my favourite PWL single everything about it is perfect the single artwork, the video and the song. It's another timeless anthem from Kylie the whole Rhythm of Love era is one of my favourite concepts visually from Kylie and my favourite PWL album. I thought this was going to be my 11 but my heart went elsewhere but Rhythm of Love has many 11 worthy songs on it.
@idratherjack Another contender for my 11, the video is still her best. It just exhudes confidence and sexuality. Charlene was all grown up! Total blast of a pop song and she is really stunning in the video. I only just discovered the Movers & Shakers 7" remix this week which is amazing.
@WhatKindOfKylie? Do slightly prefer the album mix to the single version, but both are perhaps good examples of Kylie's first dip into pure 90's house. And boy doesn't she look a stunner in the video?! Not to mention Zane O'Donell in that leather jacket, but hey that's another story!
@clockworknovak THAT RAVE UP INTRO. THAT PIANO LINE.
@Mjg0806 My runner-up for the 11. I have always been infatuated with this song and its various incarnations. Another unrequited love anthem for myself and this one whisks me away every time. An utter classic and must-hear for any pop fan.
@Wills Hands-down the best thing Kylie put out during her time with PWL, this song is just such a rush to listen to. The accompanying “aaahhh”s, the propulsive instrumental, the wind-up to the chorus, the piano riff in the middle-8… there are too many perfect moments to count. As further testament to my love of the track, I genuinely can’t determine whether I prefer the album version or the 7” mix (beefier production and vocal samples vs. an extended middle-8 - how do you choose?!), which only happens when the song itself is strong enough that the production is of secondary importance. An essential part of Kylie’s history and the singular track that holds up best today.
@Cowboystyle Another solid gold single from this era and my 2nd favourite. I remember being in High School by this point and all the kids talking about her videos for both this song and the shocked video. Kylie had become extremely uncool in my age group at school (11/12) but alot of kids were saying things like "I like Kylies new stuff". The video for this song remains one of her best and without a doubt her best PWL video.
@Remorque This is just such a cool song. Kylie sounds effortlessly sexy and the song is just so uplifting. I still find myself dancing to this one when I’m listening to it. Best song on its parent album for me! Deserving of my 11.
@bichard Well here it is. The song that saw a Kylie single miss the top 5 for the first time, but that has, in time, been recognised as possibly the greatest thing she's ever done (well, on Popjustice at least). And quite right too! Everything about this song is utterly perfect. And with that brilliant video, it's the moment when everything really came together for La Minogue (except for the sales and chart position, I guess). How this missed the top 10 in her homeland I'll never know! I nearly didn't give this my 11 because there are other songs that I love just as much (Right Here Right Now, Too Much Of A Good Thing, Do You Dare) that I know aren't going to fare anywhere near as well. But ultimately, I feel this is a superior song to those and it's a bona fide classic. If this doesn't win, I'll slit my own gizzard.
