Kylie Minogue - Tension II

Well this is... whelming, but somehow it's still better than quite a few Tension 1 + 2 tracks (My Oh My, Diamonds, Dance to The Music, Midnight Ride, Dance Alone, Green Light, One More Time, Hands, Love Train...), so I'll take that as a small success. If nothing else, this is an inoffensive little bop, albeit way too short.

The single is fine, video is ok! A cute release. I'd much rather her be doing more with "Tension II" but I guess we've technically had quite a few releases from that already.

It's 11:30 on a Friday morning and I've only just remembered that Kylie has a new song out today. In the past, at the risk of sounding dramatic, I would lose sleep with the anticipation of waking up to hear new Kylie music. Lately though I am getting nothing at all from Kylie's new releases. I know people will tell me 'it's not that serious' but to me it is. Kylie is my absolute, number one, favourite artist and to see her output reduced to these throwaway, cheap sounding, 2 minute bites of blandness is really heartbreaking. I have been along for the journey from Neighbours to this crap and coming from the artist who has released some of the greatest pop of the past 30 years, it is so maddeningly regressive to me.
Could not have said this better myself.

I´d rather have nothing released from her for a couple of years than these generic, dead and dated jingles being thrown out on a regular basis. A lot of the tracks she choses not to release at all are quite good, yet she greenlights all sorts of absolute crap.

She has said that she is ready for something different when it comes to the next album and I certainly agree with her!

It's another inoffensive bop but I'm glad we have it. People have been asking for some 'modern' stuff from Kylie for years - I remember that this thread was claiming for stuff like this some years ago. She gave us that! The next era will be different, that's confirmed by the woman herself.

I agree that saying her legacy will be hurt by little DJ collaborations (she's only the featured artist) is too much.

People acting like any cute throwaway bop she releases is not only a personal affront but also a taint on her legacy, as if this isn't an artist who, for all the excellent material she has released over the years, probably has at least a hundred mid at best, terrible at worst songs scattered across her discography

I'm not even that arsed about this debate of the new track, but isn't the ethos/point of popjustice about being in a safe space to freely talk passionately about our idols and their ouput, in a way that is often derided as a superficial or worse, a guilty pleasure elsewhere?

Absolutely, not liking the song isn’t an issue, but the discourse of it somehow “harming” her legacy and being sooooo heartbreaking is… a lot. She’s done much worse (both historically and recently) than work on a collab with a hot DJ - it’s a no brainer for someone in her position.

Kylie makes pop music, and right now, her output is reflecting pop on the wider stage. A discussion about whether that is to personal taste is valid, but her career will be just fine, and everyone in this thread will (mostly) be fine also. It’s literally just a song.

The dramatics and gymnastics over a song that is no worse than some of the drivel I have seen you hail as some of her best ever music...

What would be cheapening her legacy would be endless new compilations with nothing new to offer, constant re-issues of old albums with only remixes added which he have already or doing covers/duets albums for the foreseeable future.
Kylie wanting to make contemporary pop music and being open to working with new producers is not ruining her legacy. Whether you like the music or not is a different matter but the two are not mutually exclusive. If anything, the fact she is actually in demand from these people shows that her legacy is what is pushing her forward with this.

You are allowed to say whatever you think, people are allowed to disagree and show their different perceptions. What's not clicking?

Of course! I'm all for mixed reviews, I love reading different opinions. The drama, though, is unnecessary, if you despise a song so much, just skip it.
